PC version of subnautica command text line not appearing - can not enter command text

My sons are trying to use a command code in subnautica. They entered F3 and the command catagories came up. They pushed F8 and the arrow worked. they unchecked the command consule and hit enter. nothing happened and they can not enter commands. They tried the ~ button and nothing with that happened. Any one have a solution?

Close the F8 window (by pressing F8).

If that doesn't work, toggle F3 on and off a few times, then try ~ again.
