It's a squad based strategy game centred around the SAS special forces, in German occupied Europe during World War II.
This war sim is played from a primarily 3rd person perspective centered around the infiltration of enemy bases and completion of mission objectives with stealth, learning the movements and positions of your enemy, knowing your environment and using all of these elements to your overall advantage.
The majority of missions are completed with 4 or more soldiers, each of which have different backgrounds, skill levels and specialisations. Some are more suited to close range fighting while others are better long range shooters. Some have more endurance while others have faster reflexes. Each of them can be selected to be part of your squad for a particular mission. The weapon selection is from a large yet standard assortment of machine guns, grenades, explosives, mines, alternate clothing and miscellaneous equipment.
From this description, Hidden and Dangerous Deluxe may sound just like another World War two game. It does fit this mould, but it isn't just a war themed, Gung-Ho, shoot-em-up. In this game one has to think strategically to succeed, and if your'e sloppy in your gameplay you will not last long. Moving forward in Hidden & Dangerous relies on persistence, concentration, and patience.
The manner in which you perform your tasks is as crucial to the tasks being completed, a rare change to games where the standard strategy of running in and shooting everything gets you by. If you try that in this game, you and your squad won't survive for long.
Considering the hyped visual improvements, the detail, while not breathtaking in any manner, is still clear and conveys the feeling that you are in German occupied Europe during WW2. The bunkers, factories, dark wooded areas and so on reflect the period exactly, as you would expect, but for a game where you move slowly, crouch, crawl and lie in wait, often the look of the game is too basic. It would be nice to have some degree of finer texture mapping and better environment detail keep you company.
The action of the game reminded me of a form of battlefield chess. The gameplay is focused and time consuming, but when action is needed, it comes swift and exact. Strategy is pushed to the fore and the violence is a means to an end, certainly not a 'be all and end all' solution to each mission.

i'm downloading, looks like a game i might play once or twice to test it out... but other than that, keep feeding me freeware games <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Sort of Rainbow 6-ish (or so it seemed on the DC). I liked it, and in fact I'll likely burn this version to a cd for my later use.
it's awsome...
when you exit, it asks you to buy it... it confused me, but its for the sequel. HaD2
-/= - change your fov distance (all the way = is ironsight)
<shift> - run
<arrows> - walk/run direction
w/s - change your level (crouch/stand/lay)
<space> - commander view...
1-2-3-4 - change person your using
instert - stop
page up - uhh, "move ahead of me"
page down - "follow me"
u - use (ladders, dead bodys... etc)

it's easy, the only problem is being stealthy about killing people... anybody have tips on the first level?
One of the rare gemes that seems totally immersive, and it's responsible for getting me into that whole tactical shooter genre (Rainbow Six, SWAT3, etc). Strangely I almost bought the deluxe edition last week now I have a computer good enough to handle the tweaked visuals. Now I have to decide whether I can be bothered downloading it over a modem <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
* stealthily take out the guards at the first hut from the rocks just above it
* set your sniper up just by the railway tunnel entrance and wait ... and wait ... and wait til the bridge guards come into view
* creep up the bridge, making sure you leave the AI to cover you while you move each person a bit at a time
* say a little prayer when you get 3/4 of the way along, then cheat by keep switching to the map to see if you have line of sight to any enemies you haven't actually seen
* after this it's kind of trial and error, but don't EVER think you've got rid of all the guards until you're off the bridge and past the hut. You can guarantee you'll have missed one otherwise, and he'll slaughter your team.
And if you thought mission 1 was hard, you ain't seen nothing yet. This game has a learning <i>cliff</i>.

Editing so as to not make a triple post. Also to pretend I'm psychic and respond to Necrotic's question before he asks it:
Liku - to zoom the sniper rifle I seem to remember you hold RMB and push the mouse up to zoom in, down to zoom out - it's a great system.
Necrotic - the movie sequences are all done in-engine. I was surprised by the small size too, though pleased since I'm on a modem. I think the retail version of the deluxe edition includes the expansion pack, and that might be missing here.
very addictive, very hard, very "fun"
Spoiler....(need to highlight)
<span style='color:black'>I just love it how everything goes wrong. Your plane gets shot down, you lose your bombs, you need to through the forest, then a town, steal a boat, get to the gate and blow it up with the panzer tank</span>
TBH I just leave half my team at base and personally control one sniper. Failing that, I move two sniper teams into position, and work from there.
Its a tricky game but also very rewarding when you've pulled off some seamless infiltration.
Knifey knifey!
i really want to see how this one is improved
Great fun till you find someone with a panzerfaust <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
BAIL!!
Under fire, back against the edge of a bridge, can't move out or I'll get shot.... stupid camera angles.
Generally sniping Nazis are your worst problem, as they won't give you much chance to fire back. Hence the more spread out "softly softly" approach.
between HaD, WoS, DoD, and NS... i have no time for homework... *sigh* just watch my grades tumble.
It would be so much easier in first person <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> is there a way?
... once your in first person, THEN z for zoom on your scope... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I have to say, rainbow six just perpetually annoyed me, H&D was a bit annoying but also rewarding, and really had me playing with eyes and ears open, hoping to spot the enemy before they spotted me.
PC Co-op mode sounds interesting, tho since the game is now free I'm concerned about smacktards.
