Anime Forum Fans!

Help me expand my DVD collection!
Meh I want to expand my DVD collection.
I really like to watch anime but I dont really know many good series, guess you could say "Im a when I have time for it fan"
i dont know if this was considered good or not but I like Outlaw star when it was on TV. There is also some other anime cartoon series on now but I dont know the name. Some guy dressed in an all black suit, has a butler with a big machine gun, guy has an all black car, and hes rich, (kinda like an anime version of batman)
He has some redheaded girl friend who is a robot or something but she looks like a human.
Anyone know what this series is called?
Second question
So anyways, im looking for anime series that involve the following
-Scifi
-Futuristic
-Good Story
-Cyberpunk genre
-SOmewhat realistic
-Lots of cool dudes and gals with big heavy machine guns
SO who can help me out,
ooh ooh perhaps esssuuuuuuunaaa will come post too

Edit: Says you, DC++ is still a legitimate way to share other types of information.
The one you are thinking of is The Big O.
Some good starter series that match your criteria are Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. They are both superb series, though they are starting to move into the 'classics' catergory as there is much newer stuff available.
But yeah, if you want a good place to start you collection. Trigun and Cowboy Bebop would be it.
Check out RightStuf in my sig. Currently they are having a sale on a Trigun boxset bundle I believe. Just in time for Christmas
1.) No matter how well it is encoded, it will still contain pixellation when you watch the video.
2.) Files encoded in xvid are only 2.0 Audio, whereas DVD can contain several audio tracks (English, Japanese, etc) and varying audio modes. (2.0, 5.1, 5.1 DTS, etc)
On the subject of fansubs once a series has been licensed, most fansub groups stop distrobution of a series OUT OF RESPECT FOR THE CREATORS and tell you to purchase the DVDs to support the community.
'Saving cash'... well I suppose you won't want to pay for games of CDs either now?

(Assuming you are talkign about PC, i buy all console games)Once again, it beats paying $50 for it, unless they really have an awesome game(HL2, C&C ect)
And what do I care if invoke the "wrath" of some self-richious anime-grur?

Because hes a respected member of the NS community and... isnt a self *cough* righteous guru, or richious gurur as you say.

meh its late, and you cant get much sadder than criticizing some ones typos
You cannot educate a person who does not want to be educated.
I wouldn't want to see this thread locked, because I am always more than happy to discuss Anime DVDs.
Anyways, I always buy stuff on DVD the minute I can; everything looks better on a big TV, while you're sitting on a sofa with friends =3
They're releasing most of studio-ghibli's work on DVD now so that means you should definitely get your hands on Laputa: Castle in the sky, Nausica of the wind valley, Monoke Hime (also known as Princess Mononoke), Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away.
If Porco Rosso hits DVD get that too!!! XD
--
I can only second Gems suggestion of anything Ghibli, although I did so far only see Mononoke and Spirited Away (the first anime ever to be broadly shown in German cinemas as far as I'm aware).
If you're into action, I'd suggest Vampire Hunter D (personally, I prefer the more recent 'Bloodlust' over the old stuff, but suit yourself), the Cowboy Bebop DVDs (is Heavens Gate already released in the US?), or Blood: The Last Vampire.
My personal favorite anime series of all time is Serial Experiments LAIN, one of the quite possibly most unique pieces of cyberpunk there ever was, but it takes a little time getting used to.
I could also add NGE, but you already knew that one.

Speaking of Ghibli and Nausicaa... take a gander at this little beauty. It is the Region 2 (Japan) release of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
I missed out on the limited edition version because I couldn't afford the damn thing (It's DAMN expensive. $300 AUS for the Preorder Limited Edition) It comes with a bunch of crap though, so it more than makes up for the price....
Quite a collectors item....
And yes it does included English subtitles.
Heaven's Gate. Do you mean Knockin' on Heaven's Door? Yes it has seen a Region 1 (US) release, as well as a Region 4. The cover is butt ugly. Columbia Tristar got the license for it... and it just doesn't feel.... right....
1.) Columbia Tristar aren't a normal distrobutor of Anime DVDs.
2.) They killed the title.... "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie"
3.) The cover art is UGLY. So very very very very ugly. Too many logos on it and it does not give off that distinct Bebop 'feel'. God, look at the Region 1 TV covers and see what I mean. They ooze style. I must make an effort to dig up the Region 2 cover.... I know the official artwork is amazing.
LAIN is awesome, once you understand that it is one enourmous mind-f***....
And yes Evangelion. Also another good series to have in the collection.

Everytime you use a lens flare.
GOD KILLS A KITTEN.
But i wouldn't really recommend those.
I will suggest some of Masamune Shirow's work. Appleseed wasn't exactly the best, as with all anime, the manga is a lot better, but i quite liked it. Dominion Tank Police and New Dominion Tank Police (12 episodes total, i think) are funny, have a cool story, some neat tanks and scantily clad catgirls! It's a personal favourite.
There's also Ghost In The Shell, which i felt didn't live up to all the hype it got pre-release, but it's still worth a watch i feel. Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the tv series, is a lot better than the movie, in my opinion.
*EDIT: Oh god Inf, lens flare = satan.
*EDIT 2: And how could i forget. Not one of Masamune Shirow's, but Patlabor, the movies and tv series, are absolutely awsome. Huge mecha done in a non-stupid way (I'm looking at you, Gundam) with great characters, a believable universe and fantastic stories.
I love you.
Patlabor forever.
Inf's Top 3 Anime of all Time
1.) The Macross Series (Excluding Macross 7, Macross 7: The Movie and Macross 7 Trash)
2.) The Patlabor Series
3.) The One Piece Series
2004 will be THE year for Masamune Shirow fans, what with Ghost in the Shell: Innocence and a brand spanking new Appleseed coming out.
Dear god Innocence's aesthetical appeal is breathtaking... simply breathtaking.

lol Appleseed is the only dvd that I have in the anime genre.

Yeah, it's the same. I kinda got to refer to it as 'Heavens Gate' amongst friends because 'Knockin' on Heavens Door' happens to be the name of one of the two German movies that don't suck, and people tended to mix them up.
As for the Tri-Star cover - meh, it's a typical 'let's introduce our main characters' piece of mediocrity. Yes, it's inferior to the official stuff, but they're trying to get people not familiar with the franchise to pick the disc up, and overladen covers are for some reason believed to alienate casual viewers (yet another prove for my theory that the big corps consider us all brainless). I'm not trying to defend it, but simply pointing out that there's a lot worse stuff.
If Porco Rosso hits DVD get that too!!! XD

In that list, get Spirited Away first. It's quite amazing.
I've got pretty mixed feelings about Akira. I'd definately say it's worth watching once or twice, but I wouldn't buy it. It's ubiquitous enough that you might find it at blockbuster or something if you wanted to rent it.
A note about the Eva series: Watch the series, ignore the movies. You could do it the other way around if you didn't want to get far into it, but they cover basically the same content, so it's only worth watching one set. Naturally, the episodes aren't crammed down into a few hours, so they're considerably better.
I've been watching Ghost in the Shell, and that meets all your requirements too (except a little skimpy on the big guns, more about hacking and such).
There are lots of anime masterpieces in other genres as well. I haven't delved all that deeply into anime yet, so some of the more seasoned anime fans would be more useful to you there.
