$1,000,000 for this?
Ok, maybe its just me, but WHY the hell would someone who didn't put in much anything than new maps win the "Make Something Unreal" contest. If anything, Red Orchestra should have gotten the win. This really saddens me than something that was probably a one man effort, and probably not that...well, unique, won. And now, he gets the unreal engine for free....hope he actually USES it.

Try it from here(fileplanet): http://www.fileplanet.com/files/110000/115587.shtml

And someone tell me if it deserves it. But from everything I read on it, it seems like someone took deathball from TFC and put it in UT2k3

Wow... people have no taste when it comes to contests.

Wrong. People have different taste. You just think yours is better.

Mojo, you have to take into consideration that the team working on Red Orchestra put a lot more effort into their work. Its one thing to take an idea and update it with a new engine, but its another thing entirely to create a whole nother game with the engine.

    Effort doesn't equal fun.

I have played deathball, and found it a lot more fun than Red Orchestra. They did too.

You said it yourself first. Maybe you should start to apply your advice to your actions, and not tell people their opinion is wrong.

You're partially right on "effort doesn't equal fun", but not entirely; as someone can put effort into something and still have it turn out terribly. But thats not usually the case; The Natural Selection team, for example, has been putting a lot of effort into their creation, and so far I'd say they've done a good job of making it fun.

Foolishness. DeathBall is a mod by Team Vortex (only the most experienced Unreal series mappers/coders here - have you ever heard of DavidM ?) that's played for a good while already , and fortunately channelled the urges of newbies to play boxy maps (stadium architecture can't be all that refined , duh) , to focus them on the gameplay/teamwork elements. It's basically real life ball sports rendered on UT2k3 , with a violent twist of course.

It was qualified "unreal" because of its sportish feel , as opposed to classic deathmatch/team wars atmospheres. The fun factor of this mod decided the votes of most gamers here.

From what I've played at the local LAN, Red Orchestra does too.

I've yet to play either games, I havn't reinstalled UT2k3 since my harddrive wipe a couple months ago. Been considering reinstalling it, now that I'm on winter break and all I'll have some more free time to play more games.

Well, I guess my opinion was the same as the judges

And isn't NS fun? Even if the NS team put 5 years into making NS, if it wasn't fun it would be worthless.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand the decision... unique, innovative mod vs. YET ANOTHER CS CLONE... not a hard choice for me...

Preaching to the wrong choir there, Mr. Obvous. I'm talking about how, based on your opinion alone, you feel the need to say that every other opinion is wrong.

Well, duh. If I didn't consider my opinion to be the correct one, I obviously wouldn't have it as my opinion.

All I'm saying is that whining about contests where things are judges purely by the opinion of others is pointless. Don't you ever get annoyed at all those people who say things like "omg they have no taste, they didn't pick what I liked !"?
  • GrimmGrimm Join Date: 2003-04-13 Member: 15448Members
Quaunaut never said Red Orchestra should win just because he likes it more, he said he was disappointed that Deathball won when less work went into conceiving the idea and creating the mod. Deciding on which of both mods is better depends on personal prefference, as we've established.

But for some reason you had to express your feelings that Quaunaut's opinion is wrong just because it differ's from your's and from the contest's outcome.

Way to totally spin MrMojo's comment. His reply looks like it was directed toward Liku, not Quaunaut.

I'd just like to point out that, when it's mob rule like this, it's not the most deserving or creative that wins, it's accessibility, simplicity and fun. Shallow, easy games do better than deep, difficult ones. Example 1: I'm not playing so much NS these days, I'm playing ET instead; NS is a better and more engaging game, but it takes too much energy. Example 2: Counterstrike. Need I say more.

    1. Never played either mod.
    2. I'm saying RO totally had more work put towards it then DB.
    3. Thanks Grimm.
