    I got this delivered today:

    <img src='http://www.kungfusquirrel.net/miscpics/hl2_shipment_800.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

(the Gordon shot shown in preview images for the box is the 'back')

Soundtrack is sweet, posters rule, and the hat will nicely complement my X-Men: Legends cap. Woo!

I think I'd feel <i>far</i> too nerdy sporting an HL2 cap. Besides the fact that I look dumb in them.

That's why there's "<a href='http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0761543643/qid=1100377209/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-1643150-1000136?v=glance&s=books&n=507846' target='_blank'>Raising The Bar</a>," a book covering behind the scenes from the start of HL1's production through to the end of HL2's, also covers the leak. Available soon from all good book stores. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Pfft, even I would wear the hat.

If the Gold box had come with the shirt, I might have gone for it... :/

So how are the actual game cds packaged? Or do they just give you a Steam disc and a key and tell you to go load it from the servers? :X

I'm sure there was a crowbar involved...

Edit: Damnit, I want that hat. Shoulda got the Gold, the ad for it just didn't look all that great for the $90 they were asking for it.

Is the sound track mainlyl techno like the original?
  • KungFuSquirrelKungFuSquirrel Basher of Muttons Join Date: 2002-01-26 Member: 103Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
It's pretty comparable to the original. Definitely an electronic edge, I'd say maybe a bit more musical and less ambient than the first. Pretty damn cool, though.

I stopped listening after a few tracks, though - there's 43 tracks including the short 10-15 second stingers for dramatic events and I think they'll be have a more powerful effect if I hear them in the game first.

On the original topic: I found this a particularly interesting read when taken in context of <a href='http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/11/0031259&tid=98' target='_blank'>recent</a> <a href='http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/12/0537234&tid=123&tid=127&tid=156' target='_blank'>EA news</a>. Makes you wonder what it really would be like to work at a high profile game company like those.
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
    43 tracks? that's more than I expected..

Of course it could be that I didn't hear all the music I was supposed to in the original HL... only had a few and normally only when something important was supposed to happen... like that run and duck battle against grunts and an Osprey to get back into that tunnel on the other side only to have that bombed as I go down. Pretty cinematic. I'm sure HL2 with have that quality greatly enhanced.

Good article- it helps give a bit of insight of what's going on at valve. It almost makes me want to buy hl2, but then I would need to buy a computer that could run it.

How fast can you run HL? If you can run it at 80+ frames, you can do HL2.
  • 0blique0blique Join Date: 2003-05-18 Member: 16477Members
I can only get 80 fps when I'm looking at a blank wall. Average is around 20-30, sometimes 40, if I'm lucky. It's an old machine, but I'm not in a real hurry to replace it, since besides games (which I don't play very often now) there's nothing I do it that needs a lot more power. For now.
  • 2_of_Eight2_of_Eight Join Date: 2003-08-20 Member: 20016Members
Extremely interesting read. I like how they got the hacker, but I think Gabe should have went with his "crowbar" plan instead.
My machine will run HL2! I'm so happy. Before, I would get about... 15 FPS in HL mods (NS, CS, etc) - while staring at walls. Now, I'm getting 99-100 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Yay. I can run Doom 3 on its highest settings with about 50 FPS and occasional stutter!

Dont look at me the wrong way when i say this, but the source engine has some quite excellent applications in the field of adult entertainment. with such realistic characters, it wouldent take much to create some adult movies or cutscenes using sources remarkable technology.

Yeah, we quickly came to that conclusion when I brought up the idea that it'll be easy to make full-length movies with Source. What you're saying is the same idea behind movies, just that the term "full-length" refers to something different.
