Lazer, I used this tutorial here: <a href='http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?doc=1015283629-67818400' target='_blank'>http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?...283629-67818400</a> It explains creating skys in Terragen for Half-Life. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> Good luck, and when you make something good lemme know so I can add it to the main page. Remember this isn't just MY skys, I want everyone's custom skys here so that mappers can quickly and easily spice up their maps! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

They look good but some of the colors are completely unrealistic, like that one with the red sky and white sun, the red atmosphere would change the suns color from white to, I would guess, pink. And the rocks as well should have a pink/red hue to them.

No one, it's not that it doesn't look earth-like, it's that it doesn't look REAL. A Red Atmosphere produces red/pink glow naturally.

According to this logic, then our sun as we view it from Earth should look light blue/blue. Obviously it doesn't <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Our sun only is red or yellowish during sunset and sunrising <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> It has to do with the amount of degrees the atmosphere has on the lightbeams... (hope I stated this in correct english <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

Arround noon it is white due to the 90-ish degrees of the lightbeams on the atmospehere. and due to the lower amount of degrees during sunset or sunrise it changes color, because the color is broken up into its base colors depending on its degrees to the atmosphere seen from the planet
(prisma effect, in the range white to dark-red)

    <b>Conclusion:</b>
If the atmospehere is red there will be a pink glow on the planet, but the sun/star itself would have the same properties of our sun as seen from earth due to it's extreme brightness...

Hmm translating the physics of light from Dutch to English is harder then I thought <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That one you linked to Kouji looks pretty good, I agree. However, it doesn't neccesarily suit my taste (too white..). It would be perfect to use for some sub-zero planet or the like though. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Mineshaft could easilly be on an asteroid, and as for the others, they're wrong, but not as stupidly wrong as these. Hera, eclipse, and veil all look to take place on very hostile worlds. Here we have most of the terrains with... water? Why the hell would a Kharra infestation be contained to a random little outpost when you've got an entire water planet?

    As for <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->NS is not all set in space<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

No? But apparently about 95% of NS is now. Planetary maps are stupid, it makes absolutely no sense. Why would you have a water planet with absolutely NOTHING but a cramped little outpost on it? Why would the Kharra even be in there? Look at Aliens. They're set into space because if the Alien got onto a planet it'd grow, and its population would overwhelm it. What are the odds of even finding a water planet?

Hey, if you don't like the skies go make some of your own. I'm working on a deep-space pack but I like to give everyone variety. I try and make skies like no one has seen them thus far, I haven't seen water in a skybox in... ever... lol, so I wanted to make some so creative mappers could express themselves.

Like I've said numerous times, this isn't just a thread for MY skies, it's for anyones, go make some that suit your taste EEK and PM them to me. I'd be more than happy to add them here. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

EEK that statement is so wrong I just had to say something about it...
I'm not going to talk about some of the skies posted here, but just about the fact that outposts on planets are NOT stupid and acctually do make sense...

Let's take an all water planet? Take earth for example, when heated up by global warming, this could very well happen somewhere in space due to some kind of gas escaping from the planets surface to heat the planet up and melt the poles. Or if the planet is just a little closer to it's star then Earth...
Since water is one of the most important things for life in space a water planet would be ideal for a water clensing outpost. Ships which are in the vacinity can get fresh water. The Kharaa could be introduced by accident, an infested shipment or maybe impact by a small asteroid impact somewhere on the planet with bacterium on it which got into the clensing system of the outpost.

    <b>Outpost on a planet examples:</b>
Storage/resupply, mining, power generators, maintenance docks, a crashed ship, a station which fell out of orbit due to somekind of disaster or even a new human settlement (colonies) and maybe even more...
I mean they could very well be overun by the bacterium which infested these outposts (shipments, ships etc...)
Furthermore it's much cheaper to build a base/outpost on a somewhat hostile but habitable planet then to build space stations all over the place. Oh well personally I like maps in space more, but don't say base on a planet is stupid or it makes no sense... Since it actually makes more sense to build a base on a planet (especially for a resource collecting purpose)
And it is the mappers free choice to create a planet map, but it has to have a plausible backstory.

<b>Don't flame this post please</b> since I never respond to flames anyway and I am not going to post any reactions in this thread about this subject... If your want to continue this discussion put it in a new thread or something <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
