Problem With My Mouse

I used to have weird problems with my mouse, started a few years ago back when I played cs. I remember that the laser would turn off occasionally and stop moving. I played through the problem and largely ignored it. Then about 2 month ago it started happening again very frequently in ns, d2, and cs. The laser seems to have turned off on the bottom on the mouse; the buttons still work, and the LED under the mouse wheel still work, but it doesn’t sense and movement. Since then, for other reasons, I've bought a new computer and a new Logitech mx 500 mouse, and after about 3 weeks, the laser starts to occasionally turn of while I'm playing. Usually the only way to correct the problem is to reach back around my computer and unplug and replug the mouse.

Do all laser mice do this, or is there another reason this might be happening?

yes, its usb by default, but it came with a littly thingy that you can put over it and it will fit into the other kind of mouse slot also.

edit: This problem seems to happen with boht, but i've been using usb

    Well, try this:

    TECHNICAL SUPPORT

        * Sometimes my mouse locks up or stops working while I'm playing Steam games. What should I do?

Although this problem is not directly related to Steam or Steam games, enough people have reported it that we thought we'd offer one solution. If you're experiencing mouse lockups or failures, it may be because your computer is automatically turning off the power to a USB Root Hub.

        * Go to your Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > and click on the "Device Manager" button.

        * In the Device Manager window, find the item or items labeled "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Open it, and doubleclick the first item called "USB Root Hub"

        * In the USB Root Hub Properties dialog, click on the "Power Management" tab.

        * Note that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is checked by default. Uncheck this box, and click "Ok".<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Ok, it didnt help, and it still cuts out, more than ever now. I know its not steam, because it happens in other games and in windows. There is also a sound that plays when the cuts out, and another that plays when it comes back, im still not sure whats happening.

hmm I'm not sure but if it gets annoying or keeps doing that you should just use a mouse ball for now

    Or its something more mundane...

My (optical) mouse stops responding to movement sometimes.

    Solution?

I turn it over, and blow on the laser port. 9/10ths of the time, a tiny hair or piece of dirt is caught in it.

Try using a USB->PS/2 adapter and plugging it in to the PS/2 port (The circular one). Some optical mice have a power-saving feature where they turn off the LED and laser (I think) when you don't move it for a certain amount of time. The MX500 doesn't have this, so it might be that it's plugged in to the USB port. (USB mice are a bad idea, IMO.) A PS/2 adapter should fix the problem. (My MX500 came with one.)

I used to use USB for my optical mouse and it stunk. Use the Ps2 converter.

This may be the dumbest question ever, but, what surface are you using? Optic mice won't work (good) on glass and some high gloss surfaces. This probably isn't your problem but if multiple mice in combination with multiple PC setups do this than I'd say it warrants some investigating.

Hope you get it fixed, no one likes obscure PC troubles. :\

Ok, ive been using the ps2 converter now, and it cuts out alot less often now. Im also just using a standard mousepad that they handed out at some profootball game I went to a few years ago.

maybe where your wire is at(assuming you have a wire) it gets caught on things. some people have a messy tangle of cables an complain about usb probs, that could be it, or the usb female plug is loose, from wear(no pun intended). btw whoever said usb sucks smokes some good ****. usb data transfer is faster then ps/2. dotn say no or your computer will leave you for a smarter user.
