A Geforce 4 mx is better than a Geforce 2 TI mainly because of the wider range of features and better dlls. Not to mention the card itself carries a pentium 3 and has 64mb which isn't too bad. But of course the GeForce 4 TI 4800 is the best unless compared to ATI Radeon 9800 which is like amazing and costs 400 bucks. I guess it's worth it cause it's like the last card you'll need to buy for the rest of your life. But yeah whatever cards are good games are good, put them together and you get great stuff. Man this cookie tastes like pudding, hmmm... If cookie tastes like pudding then kestle = pudding?

The clock speed is SIMILAR, but it is not an intel-based processor.
And on a sidenote, since we seem to have gone into a GA dabate here, the Radeon 8500 (especially higher versions) are better than a GeForce 3, but not by huge amounts. The 9000 (which is new and $130) is slightly faster than the GeForce 4. And finally, though I doubt many people have the money, the 9700 under the most strenuous conditions is TWICE as fast as the GeForce 4 as well as being extremely programable with tons of features. o.O (Such as DX9 support and floating pixel architechture.)
Oh, and what I mean by the most strenuous conditions is that most of the time it's only slightly faster because often it's memory or processor speed that determines how fast a graphics card can display things. But when it's doing something that uses the graphics card (antialiasing for example) that's when it shines.
(I'd love to get my hands on one of those.) And yes: 9700, not 800.

Arg... I have an e-machine(yes. I know Im stupid)...
I dont know what I am running CS right now on, I guess I will go check, but you can not upgrade the video cards of e-machines... hopefully my default card can run this.
*edit. ok, im running CS in Open GL at 640x480. I should be able to run NS then right?*
I use direct 3d cause I messed up OpenGl somehow and it doesn't work for some programs. Well if a Geforce 4 doesn't carry a pentium 3, then why do the chips say pentium 3 and everytime it starts up it says pentium 3? And hey I don't plan to be playing video games my WHOLE life (most of it) so that's why a card like the ATI 9700 (yeah I always say 9800 I don't like 7) would last me the rest of my life. Especially since it'll be a loooooong time before anyone comes up with a game that pushes that card to it's max. The best looking game I've seen is Morrowind 3. The graphics in that game are very good. Well that ends my rant.
We're with ya on this decision flayra! I sincerely hope though that software mode will be a major priority for you guys in the next version b/c my brother who desperately wants to play has an old laptop w\o an accelerator and he cant get one for it b/c of its age. So keep up and good work!

I have three (3) 3dlabs Permedia2 cards that I'd be willing to send, (mostly)free of charge, to U.S. or Canada dwellers who pay for postage. It's an old card, but it's very capable of playing HL games in OpenGL at 640x480 or 800x600, depending on processor power.
I also have a Compaq OEM TNT2 that only works in p2/p3-era Presario computers, and a PCI Trident3d card. I charge $10 extra for the TNT2 and don't guarantee any functionality whatsoever.

Well...I dont think this forum is really intended for selling off your stuff....maybe in the off topic forum, but even that is pushing it. But any ways....so long as you dont have a comp older than oh.....3 years, I think you should be able to play NS without too much difficulty.

Hey, in no way am I critizing him, I am just saying that this isn't the best place to do it. More power to him if he wants to give out video cards, hell I got a crappy one myself, but like I mentioned before, he could find someplace better to mention this kind of stuff.

Judge not....
Listen, bud, you can knock me all you want, but until I see a reprimand from one of the mods, I'm going to continue to post about what I want, where I want to. Besides, it's completely on-topic.
I'd also like to point out that I've been here way longer than you have and therefore know the board's culture a lot better. If it came down to your opinion vs. mine about where I should offer to give away free stuff, I'd win.

Personally, if I didn't have a video card I'd be very happy of DB's post. He *could* put it in off-topic, but it'd be overwhelmed and lost in the spam in there. Instead, he chose to put it in a completely relevant topic - this topic *will* be read by people who (a) don't have video cards, and (b) may be looking for a cheap one. GG, DB!

Bleh, since we're least informed about the Radeon 9000 here is a nice page to compare things: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzI4 Or there is a purty graphic showing benchmarks of a wider range of the better cards here: Here!
Edit: So the summary of the stuff I found (though the naming is particularly confusing with the higher numbers usually being significantly better than their predecessors) is that the 9000 is /slightly/ worse than the 8500.
It's also slightly cheaper. (Though there is ONE DX mode that makes it much faster than other cards)
And of course the 9700 is the evil demon it should be. It is red after all...
