Vivendi's giving away the first two games for free.

April 09, 2004 - The original Starsiege: Tribes and its follow-up, Tribes 2, are now beloved classics of multiplayer gaming. With these titles, Sierra helped define what online PC gaming meant, and the rewarding team tactics of both games remain exemplars of game design to this day.

Now, with Tribes: Vengeance set to hit stores late this year, Vivendi is stirring up Tribes fever again by offering the original two titles free. Yes, it's true. They may be chestnuts, but they're still worth plenty in gaming fun, and this is a spiffy deal indeed.

Where to find them? The June issue of Computer Gaming World will feature them on a pack-in DVD when it hits newsstands May 4. But you'll also have the option of downloading the games from our very own FilePlanet at the same time. The choice is yours -- though of course, we secretly think FilePlanet makes you cooler.

So if you've remained Tribes-less this long, here's your chance at redemption.

Giving away Tribes 2 is gonna be a mistake if Sierra's hoping to make high sales marks for Tribes: Vengeance.

damn i wonder if theyll give me a refund for my tribes 2...its a little scratched..
but i will also recommend tribes 2 its a very good game whether you teamplay or not...it has multiple vehicles weapons and armours and a vast array of levels and gameplay types. some people say its hard to get into...thats rubbish i found it easy, and if i find it easy then only simpletons should find it hard.

Even with the new Classic, Tribes 2 is still not as fast-paced as the original T1. Ski routes are newbified, jetting still feels like wading through jello. Not to mention all it's gonna take is one bad pub to put people off from the Tribes franchise.

Maybe if they throw in some script packs to help newbies get adjusted to the rapid game pace and mechanics. Menzo did say it was a "special" version release.

    lol Tribes 1!!!

I used to live flying around in that little scout fighter thingy. Id shoot missiles into the bunker entrances and blow people up as they camped inside the entrances.

Just so y'all know, one of the big reasons they're handing these out is (a) Tribes 1, while fun, is no Half-Life; and (b) Tribes 2 was KILLED by the stupid patches Sierra put out. Hell, one of them invalidated one of my favorite vehicles.. the Wildcat gravbike. Light Armors can ski fast enough that NOTHING can catch them, and people do speed runs JUST to see how fast they can get there, nab the flag, and get back. It's not uncommon to have 15-second rounds.

Kinda sad, as I have both of my originals. T2 rocked at the outset, excepting some stability (crashy as hell) issues. If they'd fixed those and kept all else the same, it would have had some good, lasting gameplay.

No, I'm not bitter at all.

Tribes 1 was amazing, Tribes 2 was still ace but could have been better. Sierra really cocked it up.

I played one game of tribes 2. Everyone was moving at a thousand miles per hour and here I was trying to move about. I quit 10 minutes later

wow... I loved Tribes 1; I constantly kept the base repaired even at the cost of my life ^^

Never tried tribes 2. Can't remember why I didn't bother with it but I always wanted to give it a go so june'll be a good time to crack it open and see what's what =D

We should all decide which of the two to play and get together for a big NS-Forumer bash =3

Tribes 1. Dynamix IRC #naturalselection versus Gamesurge #naturalselection. Rollercoaster.

interesting, I just found my tribes 2 CD key this morning...

since skiing is such a problem, you'd think they'd just limit the speed on it somehow...
  • HydraHydra Join Date: 2003-06-14 Member: 17366Members, Reinforced - Shadow
Heh skiing is part of the game. It is like bunnyhopping, a bug in the first game, embraced by a later incarnation. All you have to do is go down a hill holding spacebar to ski in t2.
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
When I had Tribes one described to me I nearly cracked up.

The fact that the game basicly boiled down to 'who can get the better skiing run' is just silly.

Same deal when you end up with TFC just being conc/bunny hopping.

there is no fun in that.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
skiing was a real art form in tribes 1, reasonably hard to do and somewhat sorta amazing to see someone really skilled in it pulling off.
Not that'd I'd miss it if it suddenly vanished out of tribes altogether though
