Computers Questions...

<div class="IPBDescription">Just real quick.</div> Okay I have a few computer questions to ask because before I buy any computer products, I always get paranoid.

Anyways, I plan on buying <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-151-033&depa=0' target='_blank'>this</a> CD burner for my old crappy computer. It was one of the cheapest ones I found, so there you go.

Alright, and also I plan on buying the <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-492&depa=0' target='_blank'>Asus P4P800 Deluze</a> to go with my P4 2.4 ghz 400mhz FSB cpu. Last of all, I plan on getting <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-125-225&depa=0' target='_blank'>this case</a>.

Tell me what you think (please) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I'm always partial to Plextor CD drives, but they're about $60.

The case seems fine, I have a Thermaltake XaserII and it's a fine case (very near the same, too) and it comes with a PSU, so that's a decent deal for a full tower...

The mobo i'm not sure of, i'm more of an AMD guy.

Be SURE to read the reviews that people post: "Amazing that is the only way to describe this case. wow just wow so much room so organized but chieftec screwed me over my PSU along with about 5 of my friends all of our PSU's died within the first day of running them. but no worries i'll just go get a nice one like the allied 450 but other than the PSU this is amazing."

So that "deal" may not be one. Might wanna get just a case with no PSU and add a thermaltake, antec, etc. PSU with me (my thermaltake PSU has been running excellently for a year now)

everything seems ok, but for the case, check these sites

    <a href='http://www.xoxide.com' target='_blank'>www.xoxide.com</a>

    <a href='http://www.svc.com' target='_blank'>www.svc.com</a>

I personally picked up the X-Dreamer, which can be found on either site and I love it. 8 cooling fans, including one on the side and one on the top(needed due to the poor circulation in my room). Front backlight temp dislpay, and it just looks good, along with rounded edges throughout the whole case. And it comes with a 350w PSU. There are alot of other good ones too for cheaper than the one on NewEgg

Im pretty sure I want a CHIEFTEC computer. It seems like the PSU that comes with the case can be a little bad, so I searched some more but there wasn't anything else that spectactular.

Should I get a mid-tower or full? Whats the difference?

    <a href='http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=112665&sku=DRG-CSA-ULTRA' target='_blank'>Clicky</a> : Chieftec Dragon Series Aluminmun ATX Mid-T Case Silver <b>with Front USB, FireWire & 500Watt Ultra Power Supply</b>

Its only a few bucks more and I'd get a firewire and 500watt PSU. Hows it look? I think they are pretty much the same tower, just that this one comes with more.

only 400 mhz FSB? That mobo can support alot more, atleast take it up to 533. Nice case choice, looks purty.

I didn't have enough to get the 800mhz FSB, and I wanted the MOBO because I know that it would be a good choice for upgrading.

Anyway, any other opinions on the case? I think I'm going to go with the tigerdirect case....Agree/disagree?

That case seems ok. You shouldn't really need a 500w psu but if that's what you want, go for it. Looks like it has decent air flow but I'd be careful with the bay doors. I've heard stories from people who've forgotten they left the door open and "WHAM"--either they bust their elbows or they bust the case.

Get the full tower if you plan on having more that 2 hard drives or more than 2 cd/dvd drives. Otherwise stick with the mid-tower.

I have almost the exact same cd-r drive. Except mine has the 8mb buffer. I don't burn much but it hasn't given me any problems.

I've always used SD RAM and this new motherbaord takes DDR....any suggestions for good DDR ram?

Depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much total memory you want.
That mobo has dual channel capabilities. I'd recommend <a href='http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=235774&sku=K24-4905' target='_blank'>2 sticks of Kingston PC3200.</a> However, I'm not sure if this higher speed RAM is necessary if you're using the lower speed (read: FSB) CPU. The cost between PC3200 and PC2100 is minimal so I'd probably go with the higher speed.

A lot of recomondations said <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-420&depa=0' target='_blank'>Corsair XMS Extreme Memory</a> is the way to go.....Is kingston better?
  • NikonNikon Join Date: 2003-09-29 Member: 21313Members, Constellation
ummmmmmm, both are great, I used to religiously only run kingston, until the reviews actaualy said the corsair XMS was better, and now I run that, and its great!!

It all depends on how much you're willing to spend. That version of the Corsair is designed for overclockers IIRC. Either way, your machine will rock <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you plan on buying a complete new computer system I recommend <a href='http://www.cyberpowerinc.com' target='_blank'>Cyber Power</a>. That is where I'm buying from and I am paying $120 <b>less</b> than what Newegg wants, and they'll do all the building for me.
