<div class="IPBDescription">...because I only know of two.</div> Okay, I'm looking for a program to play audio files (.mp3s and the occasional .wav).
I know of two, Musicmatch and Winamp. Both of which are okay, but have their annoyances. Musicmatch with its pop up thing when you close it, online music library that wastes my RAM, storing my audio files in messed up places, and forgetting some of my audio files. Then, Winamp, with its inefficient playlist selecting/adding/removing and saving, lack of options, and clearing of the playlist when I click on/download an .mp3 file [edit] and with it's 'click on one file in the media library and then put every single file in the library into your playlist instead of the song you clicked on[edit].
[edit] Also with the music match not wanting to work anymore...that's part of it [edit]
So, here's what I'm looking for, point me to an .mp3/.wav player (or winamp programs, I guess - or options I missed) that could fit this:
-Clicking on a song or file will add the song to my playlist, but not clear it.
-Program support for russian cyrillic (not overly important, but I've found the WinAmp one doesn't work).
-No annoying pop-ups/buy my full version ads.
-Ability to create .mp3s from CDs or .wavs (second not so important)
-Preferred ability to save, and be able to read, lyrics from the player (like musicmatch, if you put them in)
-Playlist is saved to the program, so it doesn't need to be loaded every time the computer is restarted
Winamp plug-ins: something that removes movie files from my media library, because I'm not going to watch them through winamp, so they shouldn't waste my time.
Any help with plug-ins/music players is greatly appreciated. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have no clue.

FreeRip does that.

I think WinAMP has that, I'm not sure.

You can save playlists with WinAMP.
I don't see why you need anything else but WinAMP. You just need to learn how to use it.
1) excellent, totally automated library management and file organization*
2) quick, simple support for creating multiple playlists, all accessible by a single click
3) "smart" playlists (e.g. "all my jazz songs" or "all songs with the word 'skulk' in the title, artist, or album")
4) built-in, high-quality CD-ripping (including automatic file naming, ID3 tagging, and file sorting)
+Clicking a song will add it to your library and begin playing it without clearing your library (Permanently adding it to your collection is as simple as two clicks, which will automatically file it in your music folder)
+Dunno if it supports Russian, but I wouldn't be surprised.
+no ads.
-no lyric support that I know of.
<i>* All files are organized as <music folder>\<artist>\<album>\<track #> <track name>.mp3</i>
-Program support for russian cyrillic (not overly important, but I've found the WinAmp one doesn't work).
-No annoying pop-ups/buy my full version ads.
-Ability to create .mp3s from CDs or .wavs (second not so important)

<a href='http://www.sonique.com' target='_blank'>SONIQUE!!!</a>
1- it has an "add to playlist" option as opposed to just "open." you can set this option to just append it, or to play it immediately on top of the rest of your playlist. very useful.
2- russian cyrillic, eh? i'm not sure whether opening songs and stuff it will have support... but i'm fairly sure you can actually run sonique 2 in russian :o
3- sonique is one of the last good, FREE things on the internet.
4- hm.. sonique isn't really a recording platform.
5- don't think it has lyrics support...
6- the playlist system is <i>very</i> flexible. this includes saving <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
alright... it scored <i>okay</i>. sonique's really a one-of-a kind machine... try it to see if you like it.
Tried to try it out, gave me some data errors and doesn't look usuable (unless there's somewhere to download it besides itunes.com, that might be more stable or something....maybe my XP just needs a beating.
Sonique sounds okay too, but didn't have time to register before (not a big fan of the the registering, either).
Oh and that itunes automatic music file organisation thingy is an option you can turn off if you choose.
Plus the mini player skin looks so cute <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
That doesn't say much coil <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
But yah, Im a huge iTunes fan also! Go App... wait, that's taking it too far. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Persponaly, I sitll say winamp.
If you are confuzled by the winamp GUI, just set it to 2.0 interface <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Foobar is a base bones program, but it looks like it might be really good for playing in the background when I play half-life. Not really an all purpose player though.
It doesn't seem to have an option of disabling the playlist overwrite if you click on a song from somewhere else. Wouldn't really be doing that while playing...but still not an all purpose player it seems.
[edit] Thanks though, it does work well by not using a lot of ram, which is why it's a good option for half-life.
winamp is the best player, it has options for EVERYTHING, it has the best visualization, (Milkdrop that comes with version 5 is amazing) the media library has instant searching and sorting by name, track, album, artist, etc. you can tell it what to do when you doubleclick a file, to add to the playlist, replace the playlist, whatever.
i personally use windowsmediaplayer for when i doubleclick single files, because it is a faster, lighter player and it fits what i want to happen when i doubleclick a single file better.
however, none of these solved the file-naming problem in my music archives. i had surpassed 6,000 files and fighting off duplicates in misspelled filenames was nearly impossible. keeping artist named folders manually got to be overwhelming at 9,500 files.
along came itunes. two buttons and an hour of churning and it had copied my archives into one organized folder! i cant say much for its player, seems the same as any other, with a bit clunkier playlisting interface, i dont have need for its cd ripping because i use the perfect-quality-mp3 encoder tools avaliable at www.ubernet.org
iTunes seems to be a good player, nothing special, but it is the first ive found that can really organize my file archives. winAMP only reorganizd its own database without touching my files and this became too much work when my files got moved around and ruined the database.
edit: oh, that reminds me, iTunes is a resource <i>hog</i>(prostitute got censored). its the slowest opening and slowest closing program on my computer (athlonXP 3600 with a gig of ram <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->) okay, five seconds is bearable considering a 9,814 file database. i guess you could call that actually <i><b>way fast</b></i>.
Where's the option in WinAMP to change the clicking in the music library to just add the song and not replace the list; and (if it exists) the one to double click files in windows explorer and add them to playlist (without deleting the list)?
That might solve my problem (if I clean up the music library, since it basically took all my video files (which reminds me, is there a way to remove them from there?) into the library.
So if everyone is pretty good and set with WinAMP, maybe I can try and get it working right for me here (no other music programs have support for cyrillic either, so pfft non purely Latin based languages, I guess). My file system is fine for me, Arists - Track (Special) is exceedingly simple and quick (if you know what you're looking for).

Are you sure that russian cyrillic doesn't work on Winamp? If I understood anything, russian cyrillic is handled by a certain fontset, just like japanese is ? Atleast I was able to get japanese support to Winamp at some point by choosing the font that handles japanese as the playlist font. On Windows, the best choice for a media player is definately Winamp.
OMg someone has more songs then I do on my computer.... [/off topic]
I use winamp5 and winamp 1.81 (W00T!) I have played with itunes and I use it mainly to organize my files, so I don't have to anymore. Other then that I use the 1.81 when I play games and winamp5 when I am not playing games, just rendering and stuff with bryce.
I had an itunes epiphany this morning - finally realized that it csn RIP very, very painlessly and beautifully, and has access to basically all the songs i could never find anywhere (I'm talking about the shop function here). Basically, it's hawt looking too. Maybe someday I'll become a full convert and even get me a rich-kid iPod!
Btw, it's open source!
Yes, but be warned it doesnt delete the old files, so youll have to go in and erase your old music repository or youll be left with a duplicate of everything. (this was a pain in the butt as i had more mp3s than free harddrive space so the duplication procedure had to be done in small chunks, argh)

But it would convert all my mp3's to AAC/mp4 format, wouldn't it?
Because I...don't...want that. Otherwise I'll do this.
SO my question is this - does it only reorganize and recopy, or does it covert as well?
I have some weird .mp3s I don't want taking up space in there (notablt, Halo e3 outtakes, Russian 'Nachalo' reading supplimental listening, pronouciation .mp3s from foreign language sites and other stuff). When I scan a folder it gives me all the files though (I don't recall it asking me for particular file types, either).

Nope, it doesnt convert anything, all it does is copy and sort.
