Awaiting your suggestions
Hey everyone,
throughout the last few months, I got approached by Customization members who'd like to see a more sophisticated forum subset to accomondate for the special needs of this part of the community. Having tossed the thought through various minds since then, I've come to agree on the necessity in principle, but realize that I lack the in-depth knowledge to make a qualified decision on the exact structure of the subforums myself. So, why shouldn't I ask you for input?
Below, I'd like to ask you to post your ideas for a possible structure of subforums that make sense for the Customization forum. This is supposed to be a brainstorming thread, so please refrain from comments on other peoples concepts. Repeat: Comments on other peoples systems will be nuked.
Here's two general requirements:

No more than three additional subforums. The less, the better.

Easy to grasp purposes. If you need more than a line for the general description of a subforums purposes, chances are there's an easier way.

Your suggestions will be discussed by the moderation staff, the best entry will be used.
Thanks for your input.

Customization Help and Troubleshooting
Concept Art / Ideas / Team Building forum
Forum for WIP and finished models to be shown and pimped
- Main forum as it stands at the moment but without the concept art threads ideas and team building threads.
---Customization Help and Troubleshooting Subforum
---Release Subforum
---Possibly a Broken [wips] subforum, for wips that are going nowhere fast.
1. WIP/Concept
2. Releases
3. Don't know what to call it exactly, but it would it would be a place to request a skinner, UV mapper or animator for your model. A forum for collaboration, where you can easily see exactly what people need.
Original idea was separate forums for WIP and Concept, but they're kinda related.
-NS Customization
THE location for replacement models, skins, sounds, and sprites. Post, download, discuss, and get help here. Nothing R-rated please.
--Customization Help and Troubleshooting
Post here if you're new to NS customization and have questions that weren't answered by the FAQs.
--Art and Concepts
Post here for modeling concepts, concept ideas, and other general modeling references.
where people can request their stuff and also request for help, if needed.
/edit: typo
Request forums (like...if i have something that needs meshing or skinning)
Release forum
Request forum
wip forum
simmilar to jaeger...
--Customization Help and Troubleshooting
Post here if you're new to NS customization and have questions that weren't answered by the FAQs.
--Art and Concepts
Post here for modeling concepts, concept ideas, and other general modeling references.
but lump in requests with art and concepts
-----
Release Section / for models that are complete and have been handed out to the NS community
----
General and Work In Progress / For concept art and for people to show off their current projects before they are released, this forum can also be used for general modeling chat etc!
But we need a WIP section and a concept section!
Customization Help - Does what it does.
Model concept and artwork - Post art concepts of soon to be models.
Releases forum - Ease the amount of "OMG where can I find XX model/YY pack?" and erases a sticky giving a lot more space for WIP threads.
But we need a WIP section and a concept section!

whereas a concept is sort of almost a request in itself...
seperating the WIP and RELs out of the main forum will make the main forum have no clear purpose... taking the requests, concepts and artwork out of the main channel doesn't hurt it.
lumping artwork and concepts in with requests make it so that the forum isn't ignored, those two are nice things taht we like to see.
having the releases in the main forum is a benifit the the community because you open the forum, and are spammed with WIP and REL topics... giving us a feeling of an active community. it's a mental trick, but still works.
Mostly the sub-forums I would find use for is to seperate the requests and questions not so much the real content which makes the forum what the forum is today.
a productive, and progressive forum is what we need, dont segregate it too much.
I think only 2 subforums are needed, and heavily moderated.
Customization Troubleshooting-Self Explanatory
Requests & Concepts (bad name but you get it)- self explanatory
--=Wip/Rel-Models, sprites, Sounds, Misc.
--=TroubleShooting/help
--=Concept/Reqest, where every concept from map models to gun models and everything else these crazy people can post.
or
Models (wip and release) and Sprites/sounds/etc (wip and release) subforums. Main forum to be used for general discussion, requests, etc. Troubleshooting could either be included in the main forum or separated out into models and other help in the subforums.
-Maus
Request
Custom discussion(This is help also)
More organized. and more n00b friendly so if i want a model all i have to do is go to one forum.
it would be quiet for awhile, and not often used.
General
Concept and Request
---Customization Technical Help and Troubleshooting Subforum
For tutorials, programs not working, can't get the mods working, cool tricks like transparency, etc
---Broken [wips] subforum, for wips that are going nowhere fast.
For help on MODELS, so that someone with a borked wip can post it and possibly get some attention.
---Requests, pimps, and Releases
Basically what we have now, with a huge colossal sticky release thread, regularly maintained, teaser wip/release threads, and the standard request threads.
I don't see the need for a "release only" subforum when we can use a thread as before. I do want a distinction made between technical help and genuine honest to goodness "I can't work on this model" help. The borked wips subforum could be a sign up job, so that we avoid "omgzor convertz teh CASULL!! Here is teh link" sort of stuff and instead keep it to things like modellers offloading to animators, UV mappers to skinners, etc etc.
I have a horrible feeling that a "borked wips" forum would end up being "the place where wips go to die" but I'm still confident that AS A COMMUNITY we could pull together and try and prevent the deaths of wips.
Thats my input anyway.
Edit -
Yeah I understand you've to hunt through the Release thread, perhaps there's a way to fix that though? Perhaps a huge megapost? Regularly edited first post with an "index" linking to the appropriate page/post?
At the moment I use SHOW RESULTS BY POSTS and hit the appropriate "Post Preview". At least that takes you to the post in question. It'd be nice if we could use separate keywords, I don't think we can at the moment.
--Help
--Release
--Concept
the only reason for a release sub-forum is what 6john6doe6 said:

QUOTE

problem with the release thread is you cant search through it, you have to look at every page, which is time consuming.

and a release sub-forum would solve that problem.
-- Help/Troubleshooting
-- Works in progress/Concepts
-- 'Want ads' - IE: "Need skinner!"
(all mrels would be in the general NS Customization forum)
Sub1: Help Topics/Tutorials<could be overshadowed by general customization if the idea doesent fly.<meaning total deleation of this board
Sub2: Model Concepts and Development
Sub3: Model Release< could also be used for releasing half complete models or asking for help in completion
Customization Forum
-Concepts/Pictures/Blueprints
--Weapons/Equipment
--Player/Structures
-Designs (actual built things... yeah, you know, the things after Concepts)
--Weapons/Equipment
--Player/Structures
perhaps you could make a separate one for releases... but that'd be more than 2 separate forums and 3 subforms eh....
