Unofficial Publicservice Announcement About Cheats

<div class="IPBDescription">Previously titled "Oh Gee Em H4x Videos"</div> Ok, well i've been meaning to do this for a while, and, well, i've done it.

Over my time of playing NS (Over a year.) and playing online games since Doom, i've grown progressively more sick and more tired of people accusing others of hacking. I mean sure, sometimes they're right, but a lot of the time people don't have the slightest clue what the hell they're talking about.

So spawned from this, one day i decided that i wanted to record some .avi files showing hacks in action. Demo's are all well and good, but sometimes you really just can't see the full extent of what hacks do.

This isn't for all the people out there who've seen or tried hacks before. You know what they do and know what they look like, fine. This is for all those people out there who've never actually seen a wallhack, for example, in action. Anyway, onto the actual post.

As an additional prefix, all these videos are encoded in the Xvid codec. A quick google search will find the download link in no time, if you've not already got it. They're without sound and are in 600x440. They're not perfect quality, but they're watchable. I made the necessary sacrifices to keep the filesize small. All of these videos were filmed by me yesterday, encoded by me, are all using the same hack (Which i won't mention here, since that's forbidden.) and i had a little help from ]sonic[.

<a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/lambertwallhack.zip' target='_blank'><name removed>wallhack.zip</a> (4.6mb)
EDIT: <a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/wallhack2.zip' target='_blank'>wallhack2.zip</a> (0.9mb)
This first video shows two different types of hacks. Fullbright models and an average wallhack. I don't really need to go into any sort of detail about these, they're both pretty common and most of you should know what they are. For those of you that don't, this cheat makes the models appear fullbright, so you can see any model, no matter how dark it <i>should</i> be. And a wallhack, very simply, allows you to see through walls.

This second video, wallhack2.zip, is another short video of the wallhack in action, except this time it's to show the effect of enemies through walls. Yes, i know i'm a bad shot, it's hard playing NS at 4fps.

---

<a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/esp.zip' target='_blank'>esp.zip</a> (1.6mb)
Next up is an "extra-sensory perception" cheat. A personal favourite, if you will, hack of mine. Basically it shows useful information about other players like their health, weapon, whether they're reloading, and so on. It also can do things like make player models glow (As shown in the video) and put a spike ontop making it especially easy to see your enemy and the direction they're facing. This hack doesn't actually give you any distinct skill advantage, like an aimbot would, but it really does help in finding targets or knowing when the perfect time to attack is. Ontop of what it can do, it's harder to tell if someone is using it or not.

---

<a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/aimbot.zip' target='_blank'>aimbot.zip</a> (3.5mb)
And the final video, for now, is the aimbot. I will not recommend that anyone that's seen an aimbot in action in a demo, or otherwise, shouldn't download this video. It's pretty poor and since the hack i was using was extremely limited, it doesn't show much out of the ordinary. Hell, i didn't even take the time to set it up at all.

Anyway, for those of you who don't know what an aimbot is (Is it cold under that rock?), an aimbot is a hack that will aim for you. Simple as that. Aimbots have additional features such as the ability to only "lock-on" or "snap" to a target when you press the fire button, and also setups for different cones of vision, configurable to 45, 90, 180, 360 degrees, and so on. The settings i used in this video was to automatically track the target when it entered a 90 degree cone of vision. I'd not set up the vecs correctly, however, meaning i missed every shot.

I will, at a later date, get a proper aimbot working and make a new video showing different settings that can either make the aimbot more deadly, or harder to spot.

---

EDIT (21/4/4):
<a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/wfwwfb.zip' target='_blank'>wfwwfb.zip</a> (1.8mb)
Ok, here's just a few miscellaneous visual hacks out there. This video shows the wireframe, white walls and fullbright modes. They can be toggled on and off easily, as you can see. Not much more to them.

This video is different to the rest, however for two reasons. First i had to record it under CS because for some reason it wouldn't run with NS. I've had it working under NS before, but for some reason it won't let me today. Oh well, the effect is exactly the same. The other thing that's different is that i had to overlay a mask to cover up the hack name. I don't want to edit any of these videos, but since i'm not allowed to name hacks here (for good reason) i've added a mask to cover it. Rest assured this is the only modification i've made to these .avis, other than resizing and compressing them.

---

EDIT (22/4/4):
<a href='http://www.btinternet.com/~diesirae/misc/speedhack1.zip' target='_blank'>speedhack1.zip</a> (781kb)
Ok, this video is a clip taken from a demo named "cheater***speedhack.dem" i had lying around in my old NS folder. The demo was posted by someone named Tom, or something, and i don't take credit for finding it, making it or whatever. Also, the white patches are there to conceil the identity of the person using the speedhack. Maybe the person deserved to be "named and shamed" as it were, but i'd rather not attempt to kick up any sort of flame war here.

Anyway, this is the first speedhack video (I will make my own at a later date), it shows quite well what a speedhack does. Basically, it speeds up your actions, be it walking, jumping, biting, whatever, by different speeds. These can be 1.5x, 2x, 3x or even 6x as fast. As you can tell, it's extremely obvious that someone's speedhacking. Speedhacks can only be used in short bursts and take time to kinda "recharge", as it were.

---

Well, that's it for the time being, hope these videos give a little insight to any of you out there who've never seen hacks in action before. And as you may well have realised, for any of you who've played NS with me, i don't hack. I suck too much.

New videos to add at a later date:
--More Speedhack demos
--Proper Aimbot
--Misc other tweaks

<span style='color:orange'>I took the liberty of changing the thread title and making the names of the cheats a bit less specific. -- Marik</span>

Seriously, why? This post violates no rules. I've mentioned no names of hacks or anything. I'm just trying to let people know what kind of hacks are out there, and what it looks like to use them. I'm not <i>encouraging</i> hacking, i'm trying to educate people so they know what they're talking about before they start flinging accusations at people.

Disscussion of how to use hacks or where to find them is obviously deleted.

Disscussions of how to properly spot hacks however...

Should someone start naming hacks and posting links, the thread will get moderated, but not locked or deleted.

Perhaps a better name than "Oh Gee Em Hax" could have been used, clicking on this I was expecting this to be another "Gripe about good players" thread.

Good work Esuna, I'll have a look at these when I get home. (crappy work comp)

I'm downloading all three videos now. Because this is more of an effort to raise the public's awareness about how drastic some cheat programs can be, and because Steam will soon (if not already) permban the accounts of anyone confirmed cheating Battle.net style, I'm actually fine with this thread existing.

[edit]Major cheats have been around for quite some time. For anyone curious about how effective old ones (pre steam) could be, two videos of use with Counter-Strike are hosted by Nextwish <a href='http://www.nextwish.org/comments.php?id=993520142,49182' target='_blank'>here</a>, and <a href='http://www.nextwish.org/comments.php?id=1003118482,95651' target='_blank'>here</a>,[/edit]

Needless to say any posts actually <i>linking</i> to these programs, similar ones, or websites related to them <i>will</i> result in some serious moderator discussion regarding the poster's rights on the board (most likely tempban). You've been warned.

Esuna include a speed hack as well.

Proper aimbots aims smoothly to the target and doesn't snap to target like that.

There are no cheats that can change how much ammo you have, how much health you have or the range of grenades(I've acctually seen this suggested in game <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->... There may be grenade bugs however that could possibly be exploited). These are things that are handled on the server side, if you know of a bug you may be able to abuse it but this is an exploit, not a cheat(in ns 1.0-1.04 marines where allmost impossible to hit when crouching in corners and you could hardly bite them from below their feet, some players abused this by crouching in corners.)

Ooh, forgot the speedh4x. Added that to the "to do" list. Hopefully i'll get these recorded tomorrow when i have a little more patience at trying to make the damn things work.

And yeah, the aimbot in the hack was completely half-arsed. It was nowhere near as configurable as some aimbots, rest assured they will be covered in the next aimbot video.

And Marik, thanks for changing the thread name, in retrospect, it was a bit of a stupid title, heh. And the OGM thing was intentional. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So it's basically almost impossible to tell whether someone's aimbotting or is just really good?

It depends really. If you spend a little time tweaking the aimbot, it can actually be really hard to detect. One thing i've experienced, however, is there's a fine balance between effectiveness and making it not look obvious. While if you opt to make the tracking slower and smoother it's still quite effective, it's still not as perfect if you had it on obvious-as-hell mode.

The vecs can be set up to aim at pretty much any area of the body, but since a lot of hacks are for CS, i'm yet to find a decent set of NS vecs. But unfortunately, i'm almost certain they're out there.

Aimbots have to be advanced really. They give you such a massive edge in the game, if they were still this twitchy crap (As i showed in the video), nobody would get away with it. But believe me, a lot of people do get away with it, and nobody's any the wiser. I guess it's how much time you want to spend setting it up. Sure, you can turn the aimbot on with 0 tweaking and it will do it's job, but as i said, if you want to get away with it, you have to spend a little time making it more subtle. However, it's still pretty possible on close inspection to tell if someone's aimbotting or not. Infact, i might put up a video or two of me playing, one with an aimbot, one without (On a closed server, of course.) and see if you can tell which one's the video using the hacks.

*EDIT: The thing is, anti-cheat mesures will pick up hacks that spectating won't, and with VAC stepping up the pace a bit, they're getting caught quicker and quicker. On looking at cheat sites, i've noticed cheats from not so long ago become VAC detected, sure the cheat makers stay one step ahead, but the anti-cheat mesures aren't far behind.

The thing is, if you're stupid enough to go around hacking, don't be surprised if you end up with your CD-Key banned. I do not in <b>any way</b> support cheating in online games, and anyone that gets banned from servers or from Steam had it coming. There are a lot of risks at stake, and to be honest, i'd rather not waste the money that i spent buying Half-Life just to be "better" than someone else.

Quite a few of the aimbots I see in TFC don't really snap to the target. A sniper might be on the edge of the screen, aimbotter fires the shotty, sniper gets hit, but the 1st person view didn't move in the direction of the sniper. If the targetting fov is set low enough most people wouldn't suspect anything and blame it on the oft-screwy netcode.

Give it a while. The influx of players we'd rather not have playing our game means that there are going to be more and more nearly undetectable CS-style tricks and tools of the trade, and it's really only a matter of time until they make up the majority. Along with the idiots talked about in the other topic, who think they know what's balanced and what's not better than the devs and PTs, the average NS playing experience is going to be like rolling around in lemonjuice-soaked broken glass before anyone notices the change.

No there are some obvious giveaways(at least in NS). Even though it aims smoothly it "locks on" and tracks the target allmost perfectly(obviously inaccuracy could be coded in but I've never seen it), this is especially obvious at short distances. If you spec someone who is francticly trying to shoot a skulk at close range they will often overshoot the target and sort of "oscillate" around the target, this looks human and in all likelyhood is.

If you spec someone you don't see what they see first person, you see something like the server is, this is important because then there is no simultaneity unless you playing on a lan and it can make the cheater look like he is aiming behind the target, but watch the blood sprites, is allmost every single shot connecting even though the skulk is bouncing around like crazy? Well that's very likely a cheater, spec some more for other suspicious behaviour.

Total rambo noob with fantisticly good aim is another giveaway, go spec.

Aiming when not intending to(e.g. afk and aiming at passing by aliens but not firing.) is laughably obvious but probably rare.

When multiple targets are near some aimbots become horribly confused(some aimbots can even choose target after their score from the score board when there is more than one within the target range, choose target after which is closest or choose target after weapon(I'm guessing that the NS equivalent would be after species if anyone has done it)).

The hope with VAC is that, whether it's quickly updated to catch new hacks or not, it will start catching people often enough that cheaters think twice about whether their hacks have been added to the detect list or not. And the punishment is so severe: losing your cdkey basically, that we should hopefully see some real change.

Hopefully they'll get VAC support in soon. VAC has been getting lots of updates as of late and it's really pwning the cheaters believe it or not, this might drive cheats under ground and out of the hands of those who don't code cheats themselves. Also VAC has recently got some heuristics in there as well which could detect cheats generically without the VAC people having looked at that particular cheat and written detections specifically for it. Cheating wont be entirely eliminated but the number of cheaters would likely dwindle if they could keep it up.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> VAC Bans

    Hi guys,

Just a quick note or two on the increase of the number of VAC related bans.

We naturally expected there to be a large increase in the amount of ban related email and postings, due to the fact that we recently started updating VAC very rapidly. For instance, we've updated VAC about 8 times in the past week and a half.

In fact, not only has VAC started updating more frequently, but we also have new techniques for detecting cheats, including new generic methods for detecting clan and private cheats quite effectively.

Couple the above points with the fact that basically all cheats accessible via search engines are presently detected and banned. Even the most 'up to date' cheat sites are usually at least 48 hours behind, many are weeks or months behind.

The upshot of this is that we are banning a lot more cheaters, thus it's natural to expect a larger forum response.

Having said this, we are always extremely careful about avoiding false positives. There have only been 2 occasions during VAC's history where false positives were generated. In both cases, the error was quickly detected by our auditing tools, the bug rectified, and all false bans removed. In the case of April 1st, the false bans were only active for approximately an hour. before being lifted.

We also regularly audit people who claim to have been falsely banned by VAC. Aside from the 2 occasions mentioned above, in every situation we audited (and were able to close), we were satisfied that use of a cheat was the direct cause of the ban.

If anyone *who has posted on this thread thus far* would like me to audit their account personally, I would be happy to do so. Send your steam-id along with your forum handle to me at nicks@valvesoftware.com. Anyone else who wishes to have their account reviewed should use the standard submission form.

    Thanks for your time,

I'd think they would be less interested in experimenting with cheats when they know what they look like and what they can do. If they don't know what cheats do it might be tempting to download some and give it a go. Also there is the associated risks of cheating(downloading and running an executable or using a DLL file which could contain just about anything, the risk of alienation if friends discover you're a lowlife cheating scumbag, the moral dilemma, the lack of fun provided by letting a program play the game for you etc.) which is enough of a barrier for most people.

    So,

How soon till NS supports VAC or VAC supports NS?

One of my largest complaints of playing any game on the HL engine is the blatent amount of hacking I see going on a regular basis. If valve is now taking steps to get VAC in a workable state shouln't NS use it?

My personal favorite hack that I witnessed, I'm not even sure which it was. I was a cloaked gorge that hadn't moved in over a minute. I heard a marine come up to a bend in the hallway, stop as he got the the edge, and then step out and shoot/kill me. The funny thing is that there were two people spectating me at the time and it was so obvious that we all spoke up at once. Funny stuff.

He kept playing for another probably 20 minutes before dropping off. It is odd with everyone playing around a guy you know is cheating.

Yeah, VAC seems to be working very well. For about a week while I couldnt get on to steam, (ISP Problems, but I didn't know at the time), I was browsing the steam support forum every day looking for a reason why I couldnt connect. And every day there would be a plethora of new threads about "OMGZORZ WHY AM I BANNED!!!". Pretty much every thread the guy would be like " oh yeah, I never cheated, but my "brother" must have installed a cheat, plz unban me kthxbai." Or, I had such and such program running and was banned, unban me! Really funny, because most of them were obviously hacking and were **** because they didn't want to go buy another copy of halflife. There was a case of 2500 people or so wrongfully banned, but they fixed it, and since then I haven't seen one person who created a thread get unbanned. Maybe these fools can actually learn to play the game for once and build their skill gradually, instead of getting a cheat and lazily claiming skill.

I can't even see why people want to cheat... why are they even playing FPS games. The fun part is pwning people from skill you worked hard to get. Not downloading a hack and instantly being "good". I've never even cheated at anything but single player console games, well, I "exploited" PSO on the DC, duplicating items, but that immediately wore the game out and further enforced why I can't understand people cheating. Eh, at least I can happily sleep at night knowing my kills come from my own hard work.

I'd argue that those who are willing to 'go there' don't need additional incentive, especially seeing how easily obtainable cheats have sadly become.

Do the videos show the cheats working against bots esuna? I havent had the time to look at them yet.

If not, I suggest getting some bots in to show off the accuracy of the aimbot especially. I've seen aimbots perfectly tracking wall running celerity skulks before.
Its freaky, if not painfully obvious whats going on.

Nah, the one with the aimbot looked like he had one of his friends in there to help him demostrate. You could obviously see the gun tracking the skulk, but none of the bullets were hitting because he said he didn't calibrate it.

The perception one had like a radar, a box on the the skulk, like a tracking targeter thingy, and their health. And the wallhack/bright models one was painfully obvious. You could see through the walls, and see the models bright yellow.

I can almost bet that several cheating forums are already linking to this topic.

That wallhax was pretty interesting; didn't really know what it meant (had thought it meant something like going through walls and popping out somewhere else in the map <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). I think he turned handicap on and made marines deal 0 damage just to show how it tracks.
