Introducing Ns...

In a world of CS
It's hard. It's very hard, especially when your trying to look cool when you have gorges on your screen. What I was trying to do is to bring NS to a PC Cafe which I play at since my parents don't give me cable internet access I lured one victim luckily, but it is o so hard to snag others... I mean CS is so simple, that's its charm. Everyone is playing it which encourages more people to play it. I cleverly decided to make the Steam game listing only list NS games which might attract more players hehe. I try to explain to other people who play RTS games "It's Starcraft FPS!", but that only convinces them that this goofy looking game has brain washed this poor soul's mind. It's very hard to make NS look cool, like CS, but NS has depth and that is what makes NS different from other mods, which most people unfortunately don't see on the surface. Maybe I look like a freak playing NS, but I'm having the time of my (sad) life.

Comments, similar experiences welcome!

Just leave them behind. There is no hope for them anymore.

If anyone's on late, can someone explain the difference of metamod and nometamod because I'm trying to download whichbot. I have the CS Retail, not Half-Life.

it's like the matrix, people who think CS is still cool are not yet ready.

CS is fun for a few games, preferably with friends, but it gets boring oh so quickly.
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
Well, with metamod, youcan have some fun, but IMO pointless plugins, like PistolSiege for NS. Sadly, I can't bring up any CS plugins.

Metamod is also required for one very important tool for server, AdminMod.

But honestly, just leave them be. You really don't have to introduce them. If they don't want to play, then let them. It's their own choice so we really can't do anything.

NS is not for everyone, its a shame that Cs still dominates the on-line world when its the most repetitive game I'v played,

'Cool I'v spawned'
/me buy some stuff
/me runs a while
/me is shot in the head by some "1337" player with AWP'
/me wait 3 minutes while the 2 AWP guys camp
/ goto 1

I think that people will not want to play Ns at a cafe because it would take up all your day just learning how to play

I think co is the best way for people to learn how to play NS, but make sure they dont just play co !
• ScribblesScribbles Join Date: 2003-11-05 Member: 22323Members
Actually NS is pretty easy to learn, as long as you don't expect to start owning right away.

I started playing NS with the intention of serving my commander and just doing what I was told. Within 30 minutes I was allready killing aliens. Playing aliens might be a bit more difficult, but it isn't that hard to learn either.

Then again, I did start playing at 1.04, the game was a bit easier then.

HAH, dumb people, once you've climbed the steep mountain called Natural Selection, you will NEVER, and I say NEVER go back to CS.

CS is just b o r i n g.

NS features:
(If the players are skilled & the teams are balanced
& your pc can handle HL on its best)

- Very good looking teamplay
- Most amazing/creative tactics
- Pretty lengthy games (not very often though)
- A very creepy atmosphere
- Good looking maps/models/textures
- It combines 2 of my favorite games: Starcraft & Aliens vs Predators

CS ain't repetitive... there are different ways to kill people, at different times and at different circumstances with different weapons and different locations. Ns could be said to be repetitive in the sense that you spawn, rush with skulks/evove to gorge and cap res, fade, and rape marines. Or pure shotguns.
And ya need plenty of teamwork in CS if you wanna get anywhere. The "rambos" you see that take out everyone on YOUR team are rambos because they can - the skill range in CS is extremely wide. This essentially means a relatively good player could own another team that's populated with newbies. This is pretty much the same situation for NS too. Take note that NS is EXTREMELY hard to learn - and I'm talking about the maps, coz they're so DAMN big. You could be playing in a NS map for 40 mins and still you do not know the exact locations of hives, nodes, and enemy base. CS is EASY to learn, but EXTREMELY hard to master. IMO being plunged straight into the action caters to most players who just want a break after school/work. NS is annoying in that you could've been walkin' for 2 mins after spawn just to get yourself capped by some marine/alien unaware. Dying without combat... sucks.

First off, if you can't learn the locations of the basics in an NS map, there's little hope for you, and you should stay with CS. Every mod brings to the table different things. NS is hard because, even in combat mode, you still need strategy to win. It's a difficult mod to get used to, but deathmatch skills do help. I came back to this mod after the greatest little mod ever, Gangwars, completely fell apart due to lack of updates. That little mod was so elite and face paced, it just blew CS away. Lots of people said it was a CS knock off, but it just doesn't work out that easily.

Anyways, enough reminiscing about the best mod ever , and back to NS. Now, NS combat mode was a brilliant thing to introduce. At some point I'll start playing a lot more regular NS again, but it's like the metaphor that Dennis Leary used to describe rehab in the '70's: "Rehab for us was smoking weed and drinking beer for a week. After all this coke, I gotta slow down, Jesus Christ."

I say if you know what your friend[s] like to play, introduce them to either mode which best suits him. If your guy wants to find a new mod because CS is too repetitive, game with him on classic. If he loves deathmatch style best, introduce him to combat.

I play CS when I need a quick game and NS when I'm in the mood for some long enjoyable games. I never play Co as it just doesn't play well to me, it's trying to be CS but NS as well and fails. It's like sticking resource nozzles in de_dust, not good.

Before, I was a lowly ranked n00b who just followed orders and occiasionally had some sneak-up-shoot-down time.

But today I'm so much more; thanks to NS (beta3...)3! Now I am highly skilled commander and can have any onos I want! You should try too

Bleh, seriously speaking; there is deathmatch-people and there is strategy-people -I just keep wishing NS had never taken that step to satisfy both...

Saying that CS has no depth is simply a copout; it just has a different sort of depth than NS does. CS is one of the most counter-intuitive FPSes I've ever played, which makes simply learning how to use the guns properly and becoming good with them much deeper, for better or for worse, than most other FPS games. The bizarre recoil system alone makes CS just as hard if not harder to learn than NS.

I still play CS now and then and I don't find it all that repetetive... less repetetive than combat maps in NS at least. Unless you play with total nubcaeks you do need to use teamwork and the voice comms.

The best hope you have for having a good game of CS is finding a cheating death enabled server with a bunch of regulars and sensible set of enforced rules(no excessive swearing and such) playing with them every now and then(cheating death is not merely an anti cheat, it's also a good anti-noob filter).

Ye gods, CS bashing is once again running rampant.

People, read the topic starter, not only the title. Smood presented what he considers a problem, and it has little to do with CS being repetitive or not, so why do we read half-page pamphlets about that?
Show a little respect and try to follow the topics intention.
• SmoodCrooznSmoodCroozn Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22310Members
Your post is very much appreciated. I'm just wondering if anyone has similar experiences and strategies (hehe), to lure people into the world of NS.

PS. Can someone explain what the heck does a metamod mean and the difference between it from a nometamod?
• ScribblesScribbles Join Date: 2003-11-05 Member: 22323Members
How about if we make a NS mission that looks like CS... I mean, with counterterrorist models as marines, that have to stop terrorists from signing a pact with aliens and and...

And now for something competely different. *explodes*

Why do you think more people play CS than NS? Because NS is retarded on pubs. Xeno/web/cloak in combat are all stupid and skilless. How would you like it if you're a newb and you're running around and suddenly your gun goes away and you can't move and you die, helpless? You'd say f this and leave. How about xeno? Skilless garunteed damage? SIGN ME UP! This is just about combat, as for classic you have retarded commanders (pretty much any pub comm these days), HA trains that take 1 hour to end it, turret farms everywhere, OCs everywhere (not as bad as turrets), commanders don't get an arms lab until after the proto lab. The NS pubbing experience is NOT fun. It's because of the general newbieness and lack of skill IMO that drives the boringness of the average NS (classic OR combat) pub. Someone had to say it.

Edit: for the most part, pubbing CS IS more fun than pubbing NS. you guys and your retarded skilless stuff and endlessly long +use strategies ruin it.

I will not go into another immersion - challenge discussion here, sufficient to say that not everyone, and definetely not every pubber, CS or NS, on this planet puts your scale of emphasis on challenge and skill, so trying to explain the whole issue with it is falling short of reality.

--

By the way, please try not to use the word 'retarded' as swearword. It's the description of a very serious kind of situation, using it in a derogatory form is an insult to all those who suffer from it.

CS with priv clan play is a lot of fun.

Cs is easy to learn/understand but hard to master

Ns is hard to learn/understand but once you starting playing, the skill gap is gone.

Nemesis Zero, I've long since known you can't say ANYTHING without **** off SOMEBODY. I mean, if I say, "omgz0rz, t3h pwn0s iz ***", it's going to offend homosexuals. Besides, it's not like they actually mean to offend **** people (most of the times) or actual retards.

But to the actual topic:

I sit with three of my friends at lunch. One of them is so engrossed into CS that if something embarassing happened to another person, he'd go, "Oh! I OWNED you, you scrublet! You're OGL at life." I try to get them to NS, they just look at me blankly and change the conversation.

"Did you ever see that Starcraft movie where those marines were in a derelict spaceship and then got slaughtered by a bunch of Zerg?"

"Not really..."

"NS is like that."

"Anyways...."

The thing is that Nem0 actually works with these kind of people. Or someone on these forums does, please correct me if I'm wrong.

On topic...

I've shown NS to people at several small LANs. They are all very interested but the main problem is that there is not enough people to make it fun. It's also not very fun for you because you have to teach them pretty much the lot. No one wants to read a huge manual.

In the end, we have a good game of Zero Hour. 4 v 4 on that rocks

And for NS that's a good thing, because NS rewards teamwork and strategy, not some single godlike person that manages to wipe out 3 hives with both arms tied to his back.

I play both a lot, and like each for their own thing.

Simple as that... I've been playing CS since v1.0 - v1.2 then restarted after 2 years on v1.6.

And recently fell in love with NS.

But simple as this, don't judge either game until you've played on good servers with good people.

I'm an Admin for my Clans CS server and I come to hate playing on the pub some days... "Everyone go to B" "WTH!? I said B!" "I hate when I have to clean up after you idiots who don't listen"

Same goes for NS on a pub... "Commander... Commander.... HELLLLOOO... RT here...." "Every skulk find an RT and drop one and go back skulk..." "WTH, 80 Res and we're all dead you stupid f!*@#"

Each has their own feeling, each is great... but I will favour CS as I love it just as I did in v1.0 as I do in v1.6... although I wish the awp was like it was in v1.1
