Half Life Tattoo?

To scar or not to scar
I was thinking about getting the Lambda symbol as a tattoo. Yes I know I'm a geek, yes its sad but... I don't care. It looks different enough and striking enough that people will like it without having heard of the game but, the fun comes when someone has seen it before and their like "Wow, Halflife!" "I know!"

So where, what size and what do I do about colour. I think orange may just look like its badly tanned. I'm freakishly pale (woo geek ) so it won't look that bad. I'm just a blank canvas at the moment, will be good.

The Lambda symbol is a greek letter, so make sure you get the circle around it so people know "Half-Life".

Yeah, was thinking about a large one that covered my entire face, I want to make it look like I've been hit in the face by a really large (and strangely marked) Football (Soccer ball for you Americans).

Nah, was thinking of the HL symbol (with circle) on my shoulder (right shoulder probably), nothing too big... just not tiny either. That way I can cover up for work and formal occasions but I people can still see it alot (I like walking around naked/Semi-nude).

Maybe someone could design a tattoo for me based on the HL design, nothing too complex or big, something tasteful. If I choose to use it then I promise I'll put up a picture on here and tattoo your signature on my chin... well maybe not the last bit.

Can I just say, think about it hard and long, then think about it again.

If you really want it, go for it. I must admit the HL logo would be kinda cool, almost original, and not many people would know where the logo comes from.

Just remember a tat is for life, saying that one on the shoulder is kinda minor as not many people will see it anyway unless you want them.

*G*angsta summed it up pretty well. Think long and hard.

And the shoulder would be good, too. Best spot I can think of.

I myself am trying to convince my parents of letting me get a tatoo of a Cross...

    Roflcopter.

I thought about getting one about 40mm in diameter on my upper arm. Just a yellow circle with a lambda in the middle. My gf vetoed it. ^_^

I don't think that there's much you can do with the Lambda logo. You could get a tattoo of a screaming scientist on your other shoulder, though.

But I'm thinking of putting a crowbar next to the Lambda sign....

Yeah well I've always loved tattoo's but I've never seen anything that really appeals to me. I always looked on websites, in parlours etc for designs that really stood out but nothing did. Then someone joked about me getting a HL tattoo because I went on about it all the time (thats when it first came out (i had the original box and manual, still have if I'm willing to break into my old house and my family haven't destroyed them, they were in pristine condition too!).

I laughed with everyone else, didn't really think about it... at least consciously. Then once I had a dream where I had a HL tattoo and it looked amazing (didn't give me super powers, not even the lynx affect, i just had everyone comment on how cool it was). After that it just kept coming back... I mean, I devoted years of my life to that game and its various mod's, its an icon for an entire generation of gamers, it'd be pretty unique and I'd get free alcohol at LANs.

The only problem is (I'm a cautious fellow) I don't have a clue as to how it would look in real life and I can't draw to save my life ( ) so couldn't get a design of it that really made me want to get it.

Scythe knows, about 4cm diameter would be about right though maybe slightly smaller.

For those who accuse me of being an uber-geek, yes I admit, I don't care. Its not like Im having gordons face tattoo'd on my chest or the Gman all the way down the inside of my left leg (heh, that'd be cool).

Anyone up for designing anything to inspire me?

Humans evolve, adapt, and change in life. Your mind, opinions, attitudes as well as your physical appearance changes as you continue on your journey through life. A tattoo is a physical embodiment of your feelings at one specific point in your life. And while the rest of your body is changing, as well as your character, there is a place on your physical manifestation that does not represent you, but the logo of a long forgotten person.

Every human has learning processes, many through mistakes. Each decision in life needs consideration before being made, and the magnitude of the decision should be proportional to the extent of the consideration. This is one decision that cannot be chalked up as a learning experience - this is a decision that affects the rest of your life, the rest of your existance. Whoever you may become in years following, you will always be the man with the tattoo.

Either think about it, or put aside $8000 and some spare skin.

I think thats the point, it is a way of remembering a section of your life that was important to you. The only people who regret tattoo's are those people who don't think about them and I've been thinking about this for... about 4 years now.

Think of tattoos as... photos you will never lose. Flashbacks without the blurry vision etc. I've got friends who have had tattoo's for years and put no thought at all into them but still love them, just decided one day "I'm gonna get a tattoo", walked into a tattoo parlour and picked one from their list of designs.

I have not been influenced by anyone in anyway, this is purely my own idea and something I have been considering for a long time. I know a lot of people don't like tattoos and are prejudice against them but 1) mine will be easy to hide 2) if anyone see's it who really doesn't like it I can describe it to them as the Lambda symbol which stands for the measure of the average lifetime of a radioactive substance or an unstable subatomic particle. 3) if they are gonna be prejudiced against me cos of a tattoo then I can be prejudice against them for being so judgemental and treating me as a stereotype.

I say do it. Google for the relevant logo.
If you want a Half-Life 2 based logo then this is nice and simple.

The guys over at Red Versus Blue had a "Should I get a tattoo"
video based on one of their forum topics as well.
Watch that if you can find it. That might answer your
questions and help you see "the light".

Having been to many QuakeCon's, I have seen many people with game logo Tattoos. I've seen Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, DOOM, and more. So trust me when I say don't get one. It won't look as good on your skin as it does on the computer screen.

If you really want a game related tatoo, I suggest something more classic. I've always wanted to get a Pac-Man tattoo similar to what Gabe has on Penny Arcade.

Also dig up RvB's Tattoo Public Service Announcement. :P

personally I think it's a great idea. I have a personal beef with people who get meaningless tattoos just for the sake of getting tattoos... you put it beautifully: it's a way of remembering a part of your life. HL has been a part of your life for at least 4 years now, like it has for a lot of us. If that's not something worth remembering, what is?

now, I wanna know why Moq thinks a Sonic tattoo would be cool and an HL tattoo would be so wrong

Yeah, so when your girlfriend sees you naked for the first time, you'll have to explain to her the reasons why you decided to get a tattoo of a game on your body.

if their naked then i doubt she'll be looking at his shoulder

She probably will be looking at my shoulder... thats where I hang it. So much nicer than letting it trail across the floor...

Seriously though, I really do think it could look great, I can imagine it now. The problem is it definitely won't be as good as I imagine it (obviously). I just have to find out if it will look good without the rose tinted goggles on and that (as Doomaniac said earlier) is what worries me.

I wouldn't care what a girl had to say about it, if she's going out with me she already knows that Im a geek and she just has to learn to live with it. Besides which I'm a bit of a naturalist and the chances are she is more likely to meet me without my clothes than with the first time anyway. (its a good way to break the ice... gets a bit chilly though)

Just make sure you get dark colours in your tattoo. Light colours tend to fade away pretty fast.

but if i ever got a tatoo it would have to have some humor behind it, something random as crap, like a mouse or dumbo, or pipboy , sorry, i fallen in love with that idea too

Hmmm.... bizarrely, I'm quite interested in body art, yet I have absolutely none, as that interest turned me more & more picky about the quality & choice, until I couldn't find ANY I liked enough.

If you're going to get one, I'd suggest being influenced by something, then drawing your own interpretation of that art.

For example, I once considered something based off the Dark Elf scipt from WFB, but I'd never use one from WFB itself, I'd develop my own.

We're all aware that lambda is the symbol for wavelength in physics (and probably something else I'm forgetting). So, if you do get it, you might want to maje sure it's got the weird circle thing around it like on the jewel case.

Personally, I'm against altering your body in a permanent fashion that is not for a health benefit (that'd be: non plastic surgery is okay, piercings are okay (not permanent); tattoos I'm not a big fan of, because that's not how your body came (and the only way to get rid of it is with acid burning...which leaves a mark too). Then again, those are all my cool, own opinions...

Keep in mind that skin stretches, sags and tightens...which could ruin your tattoos design in some cases (usually they're put on in such a way any change causes the entire tattoo to deform proportionally). Make sure you go to one of the cool licensed people too, not the crazy back-alley tattoo parlors (or maybe they're all out of work already ).
