Me=Buying new headset
Ok my old headset seems to be broken and I was wondering what headsets (Around $20-40) would you suggest for me buying or you can Post here about any fixes for my headset right now. Plantronics stuff is a little too dinky for my tastes. I just got an Altec-Lansing AHS 502 and it's an amazing headset, it cost me $35 Canadian. There's a review here.

Yep, it's a great headset. I've had mine for months without a single problem.

seconded. My brother has a NEAT sennheiser (noise reduction, crystal clear sound, lightweight, it's amazing...), but it doesn't have a mic. I play with a mic, so I went with this instead (sennheisers with mics cost a whole lot) and it's also much better than any plantronics. I've had this AHS502 for longer than my 3 plantronics combined.

plantronics audio 90 (mines black/white cups)
things i have done to it:
step on it (avg 1x/week)
drop it (avg 2x/day)
put heavy object on cable (avg 3x/week)
abuse it (constantly)

its about to reach its first birthday, with no apparant loss of audio quality. only problems with it:
make sure you dont accidentally hit the mute switch.
i lost the boom (cotton-y thing on mic) at a lan party, replaced with 1/3 cotton ball + tape (mic quality goes to hell with flow noise without a boom)

edit: cable looks short in pic, i can walk over to my fridge and grab a coke with them on.
edit2: cable length 2.9m
amazon is selling it for US$16.92 + s/h (normally ~$35.00)

i own a pair of both audio 70 and 90, but im currently using the 70's. both are great headphones but i have a problem with the 90's staying on my head. oh well both are GREAT here is a link:plantronics audio 70 give it a try, it has a really great mic mute and volume gauge right on the wire.

Odd...
I've never stepped on mine (Well... Okay, once). Lasted about 2 1/2 months. Here's a list of problems in sequence:
Microphone boom thing or whatever fell off.
Incredible static at half or more volume.
Left channel started randomly turning off depending on wire position (eventually just stopped working)
Right channel soon followed.
Microphone just died.

Yes, they were brand new, and yes, they were .90's.

I'd go with the Altec Lansing.

Personally, I say go purchase a Labtec $10 mic, and spend $30 on a good pair of headphones. Then if you want to switch headphones (or if they break), you're not required to purchase both headphones and mic at the same time.

My mic has lasted me years, but my headphones have died out a few times. Same with my father... he's gone through several headphone/mic combos because they aren't as good of quality as purchasing them separately.

From what I've experienced, combo products provide many things, but excel in none of those fields. And when the combo products break down, everything must be repaired/replaced, because it's all connected together.

The AHS 502 is a VERY GOOD headset (although some might not like at first how tight it is). The sound is good , the mic is good, and the quality is good.

Sennheiser makes probably much better sets, but it always comes with a price, especially if you want the mic along.

And Plantronics... I don't know but from my experience, stay away from it! With special care, it has never lasted me more than two-three months for the apparently best (.90)

I buy the cheap $10-15 dollar ones at Wal-mart. They're Labtecs, and the first one I owned was destroyed when I threw it against my computer and it broke, I had it for about a year with no problem. I had done it several times before hand and it still worked. The last one crapped out for some reason this month, and I had it since June of last year. They aren't the best in the world but they get the job done and the mic is pretty clear. For $10 a month with the abuse they get (I'm clumsy and drop things a lot) they are a good deal.

I think this thread is proof that Sennheiser, Altec and Plantronics are all good buys. Some people just have bad luck.

I had one of those. I retunred it two days later because, to be blunt, they sucked horribly.

I have to also recommend Plantronics Audio 90. I have the DSP-500's (same thing except mine is USB-based with built-in digital sound card, so I dont have to buy an expensive PCI card). I've had mine for over a year now and I've had 0 problems. Nothing has fell off, sound quality is excellent. I run over the cable with my chair consistenly, and occasionally drop them/trip over the cable. They have been transported/used at lan parties every 2 weeks for a year. I absolutely love them, wouldn't trade them for anything.
