<div class="IPBDescription">Free, of course</div> A couple of my friends need an IRC client, but Trillian, which I use, doesn't work for them. I have a list of IRC clients out there, but know next to nothing about them. Any help on which to recommend for them would be great.
The list:
Klient
HydraIRC
Chatzilla
Gaim
BersIRC
XChat
KVIrc
Fractal
Thanks! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Don't you have to pay after 40 days?
And I'll check out Miranda, Umbraed Monkey.

Not AFAIK, it just has a fit about it.
Also most mIRC scripts remove it AFAIK (well at least NoName script does)
bu i recommend u go with a script absed off it nnscript <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<a href='http://www.nnscript.de' target='_blank'>http://www.nnscript.de</a>
its the best one out there and no u dont have to pay at all
just get one of the mirc versions that doesn't nag you.
And why'd you wanna do that, when there are IRC clients out there, that's works just as well?
I honestly don't see any reason too. I personally use Xircon with a plugin called Kano, but I'll be the first to admit that this isn't very userfriendly (then again, neither is mIRC). If anything, try hydraIRC or possibly miranda. Either aren't halfbad. Or so I hear.
(oh, and don't even think of getting an old version of mIRC. while the pop up might not be there, these are plagued heavily by DCC exploits, that any scriptkiddie will know how to take advantage of. Avoid, avoid, avoid!)
It says it does.
I like it because it cut all the bull **** and get things done.
Lotsa potential.
mIRC is basicaly a good client exept for the factor that it is a secruity risk (a horrible one at that). However, just about everything is cinfigured to work with mIRC (especialy if you want to use DCC stuff)
I have never seen a single client not get horribly bashed for various things.
Personaly I use mIRC, but thats b/c I have had it installed sinse god knows when and I am to lazy to use sometihng else. I have never personaly had problems with virii or anytihng... (but then again I am smart enugh not to click random links....)

And now, our next attraction is a shameless bump.
I've been going through the install for both the NN Script and mIRC. All is well until... the annoying 'Buy this!' with the guy's face doesn't disappear- it still comes up at startup. Am I doing something wrong?
Hydra is apparently decent excepting the irritating quit messages (as previously noted)... my client of choice is XChat. Secure, extensible as all hell (perl, TCL, python, compiled C module support), and you can mock mIRCers for the newbie-funk it carries to your computer when installed.
Oh, and before anyone bashes on XChat's UI 'look', it can be changed to look however you want it to. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
So far, the votes have mainly been for Hydra IRC and mIRC. Of the two, which is better?
You should try that one.
