For learning the maps I would recommend being a Marine and using the minimap, and then using Commander mode too.
Someone else can tell you how it plays. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
All the maps are great, and once you get used to them, they all work very well. There isn't any map in NS that you'll learn thoroughly in 5 minutes, so don't expect to do that. Play a few games just to get used to the primary layout, and if you get lost, don't get frustrated or discouraged. Keep moving, enjoy the atmosphere, try not to die, and you'll eventually find your way into another area. Keep doing this and you'll learn the layout. It's also good to follow guides around if you're lucky enough to catch one on a server.
In general, it is best to play marines first, as they don't have easy (or safe) access to the vent systems and crawlspaces on maps that seem to be the most confusing elements to new players. Once you get comfortable with the major routes, then try playing aliens for a while to study where the vents/tunnels lead so that you can make good use of these shortcuts.

nothing and caged are actually probably the two hardest maps to learn, cause they are just friggin huge.
I'd say eclipse is the easiest map to learn. Bast is frigging hard to learn in my opinion, at least it is once you start delving into the crawl spaces. 'Okay, I want to get to the engine room which is in...THIS direction!' *hops down vent*
*5 minutes later*
'I'm back where I started again!!'
Hera has been changed so often that I usually stroll off into one direction just to realize that the room I want to reach has been moved into the exact opposite corner of the map - it <i>could</i> be easy to learn, I really can't say it anymore <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
Eclipse is, while damn friggin big, pretty easy to grasp. I guess it'll be the first map you can get around fluently on.
Yep, Relic made bast, but overplayed maps aren't always the funnest, you know.
If you like to explore there are a great many hours of entetainment coming your way as part of version 1.
