Competition mode for ladders
note: Please don't move this to the I&S forum. I lose brain cells when I look in there most times. It's a well known fact that if two clans have a "war" such as one organised by a ladder system, and they play as each side once only (once Kharaa, once Frontiersmen), then chances are, if their skill level is the same, they'll both win as aliens.
I'm not here to discuss why aliens win organised games a lot, I'm here because if you get a "draw" during a ladder match, generally there has to be some way of deciding a winner.
Currently, on the ladder that I'm a referee for, the winner is decided by time. Whoever wins the fastest wins overall (if both teams won a round each). Other ladders have the fastest winner choose their favourite side and play another round to decide the winner, or choose by score or something.
Basically, I think we need some kinda of universal mp_competition mode which will allow two games to be played, then decide on an overall winner. Some combination of time and scores would probably be the only method of doing so, an exact combination would require some thorough thinking. In #naturalselection on GameSurge ari suggested dividing the time a team took to win by their score then comparing it to the other match's time/score and deciding a winner that way.
Anyway, having a mode that decided a winner would make most NS ladders use the same way to determine winners and make them a lot more even - as well as remove confusion from clans that participate in multiple ladders
I don't expect to have this mode added in anytime soon, I'm sure you guys are busy enough coding up everything else to be too concerned about this. But if you could add some similar mode sometime, it'd be greatly appreciated by the ladder administration community I think.

Players get on the teams
Admin stats match when both are ready (Unlike autostart)
They play
They switch automaticly at end of round (No Readyroom)
Switch back and forth X number of times (both teams play as each race X times)
Computer Generates A Report And Winner And Everyone Sees Results
No Map Change Till Everyone closes window or admin overides
its okay as it is now.
take esl for example.
you enter the score on their homepage and depending on score and current position of both teams the winning team gets point as many as the loosing team looses points
so there are imho no problems
creating such a mode would take away too much freedom.
what if some people want to play the match on different servers, some players crash etc...
That ladder system was obviously generated because there were no alternatives. Adding a competition mode (obviously it's optional to use it) would provide a balanced alternative for all the ladder systems to use if they wish. You refer to only one ladder system there, and this wouldn't effect them at all if they didn't want it to.
Although, if they are going by in-game generated scores, then obviously it'd be unbalanced. Also if they're going for winning/losing the match itself, how exactly do they determine a winner if both teams win as aliens? A new mode would fix that
Either way, we will change to a new system. I'd just prefer it to be a globally balanced one, and definately nothing to do with third rounds.
Third round entices people to go for a 2 - 0, rather then abusing a dated system.
Who choses the third round is decided by time anyway, and usually the person that choses should have the advantage as they chose their best side. So both systems are similarly flawed.
That's a reward for defeating the other team faster. It doesn't grant them a blunt win, like the time rule.
How it's the same, I cannot understand.
discussion was re-opened on our forums, and another person asked about this point. Is it possible?
Perhaps add a new section to the HUD at the top left of the screen, with two sets of team scores which are constantly changing (decreasing/increasing due to time/kills/buildings/etc). Obviously don't remove these scores if for some reason a player drops from the server then rejoins, as currently happens for most games. same with going to the readyroom. Team with the highest score wins -if- it's a draw. Time removes points from overall team score, as would deaths/suicides - kills/buildings/evolutions would increase it.
Might be complex to create and balance, but it would be simple for people to understand when completed and in-game.
