It's usually the little arachnids that are dangerous. The big ones are at worst really annoying (with exceptions, of course).

To those of you who read the snopes article: Arachnids have both 4 pairs of legs and a pair of pedipalps (and a pair of chelicerae). They do walk on all 4 actual legs, contrary to the 3 the snopes article says. Yes, I sent them a correction, but I figured none of you would be likely to reread it, so I passed the info on directly.

as for the little white things those are probably egg sacks. Some ground spiders carry their young with them and hatch them on their back/hind legs ^^
The kiddy spiders will then play piggy back on their mum until it's time for them to go earn their own lives or be eaten =P

they get like four inches long, like a tarantula (kids have tarantulas as pets in this country) they do run pretty damned fast (ive heard theyve been seen chasing tanks for a mile...) and they eat things smaller than themselves. if i were in iraq i would appreciate the camelspiders eating any poisonous scorpions in the area, the same way i appreciate the bats out by my house keeping the mosquito population down.

and the size would probably be about... well, get your hand, and lay it flat on the table. now, you know the knuckled you bend your fingers at to make a fist? go one up, so your fingers are bent in half, and tuck the end of your fingers away... [i.e bend 2nd knuckle away from your palm, into your hand], and lay flat on table. that would be the height. width would be probably twice as wide, but the legs elongate a lot.

Camel spider, known to jump up onto the bellies of camels, even while they're standing, and nibble some of the flesh off. Not afraid to take off a chunk of a persons nose too, as a geologist learned first hand in the desert.

And Quaunaut, it's the sand fly that causes the "Baghdad Boil".

From snopes, Camel spiders DO NOT eat antything off camels or humans.

Camel spiders can grow to be as large as dinner plates.

Camel spiders can traverse desert sand at speeds up to 25 MPH, making screaming noises as they run.

Camel spiders can jump several feet in the air.

Camel spiders eat the stomachs of camels, hence the name "camel spider." (Legend includes the detail that camel spiders eat camel stomachs from either the outside in or the inside out. In the former case they supposedly jump up from the ground and grab onto camels' bellies from underneath; in the latter case exactly how spiders allegedly as large as dinner plates get into camels' stomachs intact remains unexplained.)

Camel spiders are venomous, and their venom contains a powerful anesthetic that numbs their victims (thus allowing them to gnaw away at living, immobilized animals without being noticed). U.S. soldiers were said to have been attacked by camel spiders at night but remained completely unaware of their plight until they awakened in the morning to find chunks of their flesh missing.
According to most spider experts, these claims are all false. Camel spiders (so named because, like camels, they can be found in sandy desert regions) grow to be moderately large (about a 5" leg span), but nowhere near as large as dinner plates; they can move very quickly in comparison to other arthropods (a top speed of maybe 10 MPH), but nothing close 25 MPH; they make no noise; and they capture prey without the use of either venom or anesthetic. Camel spiders rely on speed, stealth, and the (non-venomous) bite of powerful jaws to feed on small prey such as other arthropods (e.g., scorpions, crickets, pillbugs), lizards, and possibly mice or birds. They use only three pairs of legs in running; the frontmost pair (called pedipalpa) is held aloft and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. Camel spiders shun the sun and generally hide during the day, coming out at night to do their hunting.

I'm thanking god it was just a picture, because I suffer from severe arachnophobia.

If one ever came near me, it either
    a) sees me running away like a bunny on crack
    or
    b) meet the wrath of my trusty BB rifle

that thing freaked me out too. It looked huge when i first saw that pic (a while back), but i did some reading and found out that's just a basic... spider thing.

I wouldn't say i'm arachnophobic, i just really, really don't like spiders. Or anything with more than 4 legs, really. But i don't think it's fair that they should die just because they scare me. So if there's a spider in the doorway i cringe and wait for someone to come and move it. God help me when i get a place of my own <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

What the hell? This sentence and paragraph completely contradict themselves. At any rate, it's a confirmed fact that camel spiders do eat flesh from living animals, that's the way they've evolved.

Although they look ferocious and have a powerful bite, they are harmless – for humans at least.
Despite the name and appearance, camel spiders are actually solifugids which, unlike spiders, do not have venom or silk glands. They prey on spiders, scorpions, insects, small vertebrates and other solifugids. Usually nocturnal, they sometimes come out in the day but will seek out shadows, even if the shadow is cast by a human. If the person moves, the solifugid follows the shadow, which gives the impression it is giving pursuit. It’s easy enough to get that impression, particularly as camel spiders can move at speeds of up to 16km/h.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

They are the same species. They are pretty much harmless to humans, but still butt-ugly enough to warrant a shotgun to the thorax. Or at least a really, really, REALLY big shoe thrown at them.

I scrolled through these pages very slowly avoiding pics of spiders.

Then I got to kyliegirl's post and I scrolled back up and stopped looking and posting here.

Camel spiders are like one or is the fastest spider I believe and also..I too have arachnid phobia to some degree.
