Nerd Conventions
Well over the weekend I attended a Comic/Anime/Video-game convention called Supanova.
Plenty of swag as well. Some of my more prominent purchases include
- Ranma 1/2 Female Ranma Cold Cast Resin Statue
- Read or Die Yomiko Readman Cold Cast Resin Statue(Bought for a friend. But I wanted it... The ba*****)
- Evangelion Asuka Langley Winter Collection PVC Figure
- The Transformers Hot Rod Cold Cast Porcelain 6" Bust
- Sgt Frog Volume 1 (You will BUY this and enjoy it no end. My personal satisfaction guarantee. AH! VENKMAN!)
- Newtype (Anime magazine. It's monthly. Good info source)
hmmm....
Friend bought a Mahoramatic PVC figure, the 2 Mahoramatic OSTs, Full Metal Alchemist Keychains. Other friend bought a semi-reasonable Naruto wall scroll.
Think that's all the main swag.
Onto the convention
I'll put this in note form
- David Carradine (Bill from Kill Bill) was there, he is very docile in real life. What you see onscreen, is what you get.
- David Carradine needs to get over himself for thinking people will pay $40 for his signature
- Must stab 30 person deep line of people waiting for said signature
- Star Trek fans are scary. One guy yelled out Star Trek sucks when Mr.Sulu started talking and he had to run for his life.
- 500 pound female Star Trek fan in a red see-through top with the US Enterprise and Mr Spock, Capt Kirk and Capt Picard tattooed to her back = SINGLE SCARIEST IMAGE EVER. I have a photo of it on my phone to scare future generations who may not believe my tale.
- While standing in line for a drink, some 14 year old female cosplayer comes up and asks if the box in my bag (Ranma resin statue) was the entire collection of Ranma on DVD, I tell her no and produce the statue for a quick show off. Her response, "Ranma sucks, get Shampoo.". My response, "Sure, I'll get her once she stops being as ugly as you are." (I hate cosplayers)
- Death to all cosplayers. Especially the nerd's with the high voices and pimples in Sailor Moon and Trigun costumes. ESPECIALLY THE FAT ONES.
- Friend wanted a look at a Lightsaber replica for $500, was pretty good. Then the Nerd King in plad shirt and tracksuit pants, pimples, worn out glasses, and bowl haircut comes over and starts rambling off all this crap about some guy making a replica of it... or something... we got away pretty quickly.
- Dragonball Z Kamehama constest = bwhahahaahhahaa
- Had to stop like every 5 minutes because someone had a question about the statues I had bought.
- Ran out of money for Optimus Prime 20th Anniversery Edition...
- Eric Vale (Voice artist for dubbed DBZ) didn't turn out to be a gigantic dickhole like I thought he was. But he wants to americanise anime too much.
- Missed out on seeing John Noble (Denethor LOTR) for my friend's amusement. Too bad...
- Richard Taylor (LOTR Weta Workshop) didn't answer any questions about the upcoming Eva movie. Dammit.
- Yu-gi-oh contest = bwhahahahahahahahahahahahaha
- 10 year old punk who overheard me say it was crap should realise he's only 10 year's old and I'm 7 foot 5....
Well that's about it really. God you don't realise how tired you get walking around all day. And setting down for a seminar or two really really helps (Even if you don't like the subject material ALA waiting for David when Mr Sulu was on)

You're anime-obsessed, yet still retain the ability to rag on the real nerds. Respect that.

Yes well, if I turn up at a convention and I don't look 95% like that character I'm meant to look like I'd SERIOUSLY need to reassess my outlook on life.
DO NOT MAKE ME GET OUT THE FAT CHICK PICTURE.
ROFL. I was scrolling down the page and I totally did not see that coming which was why I choked on what I was eating and fell off my chair. LOL is all I can say.
(Mind you, I liked Star Trek so that isn't the reason I am laughing, just that, well, his explosion was so random.)

I put it through the Warp Drive a few times
I kid.
I kid because I love.

in style tho, so i guess that counts
What about 250 pound guys dressed as female characters? With tails. *shudder*
Yes I have a cosplaying "friend" and he brought in his costume to show us one day along with some latex LARP weapons. It was at that point I realised both how truly scary he is and how much of a nerd I have become merely by association. I also thank god daily that i've never seen him wearing it.
(No I don't know what character from what anime he was meant to be, nor do I wish to. He is part of the reason Japan scares me)
Yeah. Some pretty scary stuff.

Sorry, but Picard cements Star Trek (or at least The Next Generation) firmly in the zone of the brilliant.
D:
btw, I once accidentally was in the same building as an anime expo, it was very scary.
Sometimes I think of Garak and Dukat while having a Forbidden.

The mind boggles!
I fear punishment from the Pah-Wraiths more than our God.

I'll sign that list too.
Sounds like fun, sucks you couldn't get Optimus.

Y'know, they say the ST universe is fictional, but I don't dare double-cross the corrupt Bajoran prophets.

Ditto.
My general take on cosplay is that you don't like what you see, nobody's making you look. That said, I also think that if you're on the heavy side and you wear something skimpy, you really have no right to complain about negative reactions.
I'm intrigued, yet afraid to look up it's definition for fear of seeing something as horrific in nature as goatse.cx or tubgirl.

Cosplay: Dressing up as your favorite anime character.
It gets pretty ugly.
