Linux/server requriments/bandwidth

Question
I am currently running a tfc server, hlds_l, drake 8.0 distro.
My questions are, What cpu and ram requirements does the nsds_l need? What is the estimated bandwidth usage, say for a 18 player game? I would expect nsds_l would be the same,(hlds_l)i.e. "as the number of players increase so does the amount of packets each player sends/recieves". So a rough guess would do.
Current server specs; AMD 1.0ghz cpu, 256mb DDR
768/768 SDSL connection, Thanks in advance

You should probably think about buying more DDR RAM if you plan on running a server. For now I would suggest that you make sure your page file (virtual memory) is somewhere around 750 to 1000 MB minimum. I believe I read somewhere that ideally there should be 32-64MB of RAM per person.

A rig like yours is definitely going to be RAM and circuit-bound. I would say 10-12 players, more like 10. Once the next version of NS-Linux Dedicated comes out, it might be able to run a few more players a game.

ok, np on the ram, so the first comment was 64mb ram per player. I bring it to say 1gb. Not even having played this game, What would you all say is a average number of players that the game is set to play?

I set up a server tonight because I couldn't find one to play on . Needless to say, I'm running a dedicated server on Windows 2000, with an Athlon 2000+, 512 mb DDR machine. My link is a 768k sDSL line. I set it to 12 max players. It's been up for about 3 or 4 hours, and everyone pings around 100 and no one has complained of any lag.

NS doesn't use anything like that sort of RAM.

    CPU is the big issue.

RAM wise, a 20 player server, full, uses about 128Mb of ram.

Ideal numbers for a 1Ghz machine is about 10 players (as Monse says)

They'll ping about 200-300 but with NS the netcode is so good that the game is perfectly playable with those sorts of pings and seems more like about 120ms ping in other mods.

    joev.
