<div class="IPBDescription">too quiet</div> I just felt the need to share something I learned today.
I've been noticing for a long time that whenever I leave my room, that my tv is just way too friggin loud. So I go back in and turn it down, then proceed to go do whatever I was leaving my room to do. When I come back, I can't hear it and end up turning up the volume again.
Now, I've known for a while that I had a lot of background noise in my room from the 3 computers I've always got running in it (1 personal pc, 2 linux servers for various stuff). I've always assumed that it was partially responsible for me having to turn up the tv in the past, but never thought it was a large factor.
I just got around to consolidating the 2 servers into 1, moving that 1 server to another room, putting the case back on my personal pc, and putting my personal pc into a location where the noise is less likely to carry very far.
OOOOOH MYYYYYYYY GOD
I can't even begin to express how wrong I was about the level of white noise in my room. I can now suddenly hear stuff that I didn't even know was missing before, like keystrokes. It's creepy almost how quiet my room is now.
So, learn a lesson from me, get rid of noise pollution today!

EDIT: apparently when you stretch out the word "god" it becomes a completely different word.

I have an amusing twist to that,
for many years my celing fan in my room was stuck in to on position, and I was horribly afraide of the dark.
this left me with 2 things:
1) I love the cold (fan on in winter is par for the course for me)
2) I can no longer sleep with out a strong piece of white noise going (in this case its been replaced by my computer)

[edit] I used to play rain and wind tracks on loop with my comuter at night... don't remember if it helped, just kinda took too long for me to bother to set up every night.

I get that too, annoying as hell.
I myself often leave the TV on just for no particular reason, but it does emit a very high frequency tone even when its muted which is somehow comforting. Even when I go to sleep I usually open my window and fall asleep to the far off sound of cars driving along on the nearby highway.
I think everyone gets it to at least a small degree.
I'd chalk it up to your brain's audio filters being confused.
When I take a nap in the daytime it doesn't usually bother me though. But generally I cant stand any type of sound when I try to fall asleep at night... A clock ticking will drive me crazy.

Very scary, when I was a kid I thought it meant I was gonna die or something, and I would stay up at nights listening to my ears ring.

Until I either manage to ignore it, shove it in a drawer, or throw it against the wall. That thing is so loud when there's no other noise. Then again, sometimes my ears like to ring for no reason -even though I can still hear everything else (firecrackers + next to ear = not good). Can't hear it right now though...probably my typing, and my roommates NWNs and the people outside yelling at eachother.
Just imagine 300 years ago when the only ambient noises would be natural once you got past 7pm or so (that and the fact the atmosphere would be clearer so there would be more starlight).

lol when iwas in college we had 5 pcs on in the room . (yea 2 people 5 pcs)
plus a fan.
Then when it was time to pack up and leave no more PCs on that one night,
OMG it was like, total dead silence and no one could sleep.
oh well
now when i sleep i always have the trance channel going over from Di/fm..
I have the sound just loud enough so i can here the bass beat and some of the melodic parts (kinda hard to explain) just barely audible.
Pretty nice for me lol.

Argh, I get that too, also if I'm trying to listen to something at really volume I get it. And when I kinda focus on it, it gets worse..

If it was a constant ringing, then I would maybe be worried. But seeing as it's just a ringing that only sometimes (ie. very rarely) happens when there's no/very little noise, lasting for maybe 5 minutes and is only a slight annoyance, I see little to no point in doing so.
I suppose it all depends on what you're used to.
Oh, and I sleep with music on. In fact, I ALWAYS listen to music <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> (apart from class)
The only time I've ever suffered rining in my ears is after a really loud nightclub or five or on one of those rare occasions when I've not slept properly for a week (which is luckily solved by basically hibernating for a whole day or two ^^; )
<b>edit:</b> I can't sleep with noise unless I'm super tired... once I'm asleep though nothing wakes me up! I once slept through a fire that happened in a neighbours room! A fireman carried me outside in his arms amongst all the screeching fire engines and the busy chatter of the evacuated flat residents... next day when I woke up I went downstairs and told mum I'd had the strangest dream. =3
The ringing I'm talking about is the so-called "sound of silence" which I'm pretty sure that every person I've ever talked to about it can hear.

Let's remember that listening to stuff over 85dB (some places say 90dB...but whatever <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) can be damaging to your hearing. <a href='http://www.hei.org/news/factshts/nihlfact.htm' target='_blank'>Minor info.</a>.
Again, Firecracker + next to ear = bad..although, I still hear fine - it just rings on occasion (not sure what occasion...maybe when it's loud), and I get a bit more earwax and stuffiness in there. Bah.
I sleep soundly when I'm at home, because my room's in the basement and therefore little sunlight gets down there. Then at school, I open the curtains so I don't sleep through class (well..I try anyway, gotta close them to see the computer screen - sometimes I forget).
