Regarding "alien inexperience"

Most of the responses from playtesters regarding the whole "unbalancing" issue have been, "Just practice with the aliens, you'll get it, then you'll become unstoppable."

Okay, I'm willing to accept that. I'll even keep playing and practicing. I think it's got great potential, and I just can't say no to a good, free game.

But how many average members of the public are going to be willing to keep pluggin' away, playing (and losing) until they "get the hang of it"? I get the feeling that most people will say, "Screw it," after a couple of days, and go back to CS.

The greatest game in the world can still fail if it can't attract an audience.

yea, i always thought the aliens were suposed to be STRONG (I.E. have much more health than marines).

Did i miss something? cause the fade gets taken down in 2 seconds to a HMG.

Heh. Yesterday, i played for like hours, and in the end, i was un unstoppable, cloaking, redepmtion-ed (?), Fade... with my 2 Onos buddies and one Gorge we beat the marines in like 15 min... it was grea~t, lots of teamwork (onos primal scream, onos+onos+fade attack, fall back, gorge heal)... u just need to have some teamwork, and choose the right upgrades, then infest the whole map. Flood them with offence turrets, and place some defence turrets in the most strategic places. Oh, and.. scare the crap out of them.
    Hope that helped. Cya

The fade is tough as nails. I think you are being a little off there bud. You can take a few hits from the HMG. But its not the hits you should take, its the damage that the fade does. All the aliens are insanely strong(well the onos is also tough as hec). Use them they way they are supposed to be played. I manage alot of kills on marines just playing each level evolution the way it was ment to be played. And what you say about great. I hope anyone not smart enough to learn this game leaves after a short time. Just makes it better for those that are gona learn it.
If anyone has ever played Vampire slayer you will remember when everone thought father D own the vampires, until they reallized how to play them, now the vamps are said to be too strong. agh. NS is alot more complicated than many other games. you HAVE to use TEAMWORK, and THINK. Thats really all it takes. Play smart, and you can and will win.

Alright. Let's turn that argument over and see what happens.

Supposing we did make the aliens much stronger right now. What happens a few weeks down the line when people start learning how to play the alien effectively, as they were intended to be played? I'll tell you. We get dozens of posts from players complaining that the marines are too weak and the aliens are unstoppable. What have we solved?

Yes, by its very nature, NS is more complex than your average DM or CS game. This is what makes it an enjoyable experience. If new players join, try to play as they do in DM or CS, get frustrated because they are no longer effective players, then they will have to make a choice: go back to DM/CS/whatever or take the time to learn NS. For those who choose to learn, the reward is more than worth the effort. That's about all I can say.

Yes relic, your right. We should wait to find out how aliens will be played once people practice a little. I wouldn't want a balancing patch so soon after ANY release.

I'm just saying that even if aliens get better, their entire strategy dooms them to failier.

All but the onos rely on ambush, how are you suposed to advance and yet stay still and ambush at the same time? You can't, thus, the aliens are a static race, doomed to failier by the fact that they can't assult entrenched marines, they can only "get the drop on them."

Every game has a learning curve. This game is complicated. Ergo, the learning curve will be steep. If anyone doesn't want to take the time to learn, I don't want them on my team whining about how they die over and over.
