Staring at an LCD screen for a while is straining for other reasons, like much lower contrast than a CRT (whites aren't all that white, and blacks aren't very black at all), or the slight blur from playing at anything other than the natural resolution. There isn't a flicker, but the refresh rate still limits your effective FPS (for what it matters beyond 60). A CRT is still much much better for gaming, but there are a very few LCD screens that work out well.
But I only play when I'm home and here I use a 19" CRT monitor. I've only played using the laptop monitor a couple of times but I didnt have any problems with then.

My lappy has a GeForce Go in it, and I'd have to say these things are quick. I'd definitely reccomend one to anyone.
As for Optical mice going crazy; You Sir, have a broken item somewhere. Opti mice are fine, and I play damn fast.
