"lan servers are restricted to local clients"

if i try to connnect to a server with more then 6 green dots on net speed i get a message saying "LAN servers are restricted to local clients only (class c)".. this is really frustrating because im doomed to play on a server with lousy ping and i cant play on my friend's private server because it has too good ping!! i have talked to others and they dont seem to have the same problem (atleast the ones i have talked to.. not many..) so..

computer specifications:
800mhz
384mb ram
a riva tnt2 card
a soundblaster live card

i really hope someone can help me..!

This is SERVER SIDE. If you host a server check your server.cfg and listenserver.cfg and you will note that SV_LAN is defaulted to "1" SET IT TO "0"!

This will also happen if your server cannot connect to the WON system. In my case, I don't have DNS setup on my box. (linux) I had to go to the hlds_l/valve/woncomm.lst and change all of the name servers to the ips.

Typing sv_lan 0 in console also works.
