Accounts Reactivated
Since SOE refuse to advertise PS as much as they should I've taken it upon myself to post this little bit of information regarding the first anniversary of Planetside.
Anyone that has played Planetside (with a paying account I'm guessing) will be able to play for one week entirely free around the period of the market release of Planetside late May.
There was meant to be confirmation of this and important E3 news on the PS forums but nothing has been released yet.
Planetside Website
Is where the forums are located (under the community tab)
The game has changed ALOT since CC was released and they did the last reactivation.
Please no "Planetside is dieing/crap/boring" etc I'm merely posting this so that people that might not of been aware of this might stumble upon it now.
As I said this has yet to be confirmed but it would be an idea to just have a quick browse of the forums every couple of days.
Hope to see you guys on Planetside soon.
::EDIT::
Apparently a big announcement is being made tonight on ask the DEVS shoutcast

::MORE INFO::
Old Accounts have been Reactivated and a 30 day trial from fileplanet is back! (Btw the trial will ask u for CC details, just fill in any crap, it won't charge until the end of the 30 day period)

Note, I'm not bashing PS here, I just want people to realise the more polite counter arguments to it.
1. Despite Sony's claim, it is still effectively a round based game. You take a continent, go to bed, you take the same continent because it got lost overnight.
2. The vehicles. Basically, BF series did them better. The aircraft still basically feel just like the buggys/tanks, with Z dimension tacked on. Don't expect the fun of piloting a Huey.
3. The lag. For the amount of graphics being displayed, this game is OBSCENELY memory/CPU/GPU hungry. Also, the only reason to play a game like this is to take part in the HEEEUGE battles, which you generally have trouble getting in on because it does start to lag then.
4. Sniping sucks. The weapons get more inaccurate the more you move, so to snipe with any accuracy effectively you have to aim aheard, sit still and then wait for the guy to run through your crosshair. A minor additional detail, but one that really narked me off.
That's not to say it isn't a great game to try, it is, and I've come across very negative in here. Just don't go in expecting a single word of Sony's promo fluff to hold true.
Regards,
Shockeh
When you look at some of the specs people are playing the game on you'd be surprised at the trouble *some* people have with the game on p4 3GHz 1GB ram, 9800 xt's etc. However there are many who have far less extreme rigs and are able to run the game far better. Just one of those things.
However, for the whole of my PS career I've been using a AMD 1.7xp 768 ram (down to 512 over xmas ) and a gf4 mx440 64mb, and yes in huge fights (ala the zerg) my fps were around 10 occasionally, in a pop locked continent with the whole 2 empires on that cont fighting in one base's sphere of influence.
However you don't have to follow the zerg, if you're in an outfit you may be tasked with taking a relatively quiet cont whilst the zerg pounds away on another and some of the smaller platoon vs platoon (30 v 30) fights can be far more exciting and tense then a zerg fight as your whole attack may stall if you lose your one spawn point.
30 v 30 you might say, meh, I can play (insert game here) instead for free.
Yes you can but that 30v30 fight is for one base/tower on a continent with 10 bases and 20-30 towers.
All I can say is that there are lots of moments in the game when you can just stop fighting and take a look around and take in a vista that you most likely won't see in any other game out at the moment.
Being a grunt with your trusty assault rifle hiding in the trees firing at the base defenders on the outer walls of the base only to see an enemy tank come rolling out firing it's 150mm cannon at your squad mates. Seeing them getting annihilated before screaming over TS "We need our Mag squad ASAP!!!" and to see 5 magriders crest the hill 200 metres behind you and blast the NC Vanguard into a smouldering wreck in less the 5 seconds is just one example of something that can happen during one insignifcant moment of the assault.
If you've played before and they do reactivate the accounts, just come and try it again, you won't of lost anything for it.
i got other ways to waste my time.
PlanetSide is so fun for the first week or two you play it.
You mean you have to shoot like a real sniper? Be nice.

Real snipers don't hold completely still awaiting something to pass through crosshairs...
Yes, they usually do. They make fine adjustments to their aim, but once they're in position and they've got an angle lined up, they aren't going anywhere. They genrally have to remain hidden, so they can't expect to tag anything when not in a prone position, let alone running across a field dodging gunfire with the other grunts.

Perhaps I didn't explain it properly. You end up pointing at mid air, because this isn't real life and people don't run in nice predictable straight lines, either hoping some idiot will run through the crosshair (seeing as a basic trooper takes two hits, this is somewhat unlikely to get you any kills)
OR
You spend your time shooting at A-T troops, because they tend to stand still more.
But thanks for the update, it's not like I studied it or anything....
I built a rediculous PC to play PS on (well, not only for PS, i considered HL2 and doomIII hardware requirements too)
P4 2.8c hyperthread
1g DDR400 dual channel (kingston's finest)
radieon 98XT (its got balls!)
taking that into consideration, i always got more than 50FPS, ALWAYS... in those 300-man battles on ceryshen, 52FPS. VIRUS outfit reaver attack night, couple hundred reavers... 54FPS. Having an uncapped cable line helps too.
the other factor was being part of THE best outfit on Johari (as a Vanu.) you know what its like to play with cool, well known people on a server you always play at... its kind of like that, only when your mag glides by and people see the your logo on the side, fear is stricken into the hearts of your enemies and morale is boosted among the infantry. If you want to get the most out of PS you have to find a really kickass outfit... i was lucky enough to be in the best of the feared and reveared best.
I just graduated, im going to reactivate my account anyway, becasue PS was the funnest online game ive ever played.
something like snipers work in pairs ?
No, snipers ALWAYS work in pairs. The spotter verifies targets, helps the sniper adjust elevation and windage, and carries an assault rifle in case things get dicy. It's also nice to have company when you're in the bush for 8 days waiting for a convoy to get to you.

Yeh but in planetside that mean half the time you were in friendly teritory....
Besides mines are much more effective and they dont need to move to kill...
THANK YOU.

One-shot kills might work in Counter-Strike or TS or any other round-based game, but you're forgetting that someone could have spent upwards of 10 minutes trekking across country to get to an enemy base, and I would be pretty **** if I was killed in one shot after all that. Although if you spend 10 minutes WALKING to an enemy base you either need a vehicle cert, or a friend who has one. O.k that's an extreme scenario but you get my point, it's not just a case of "oh i'm dead, but i'll be back in the action in 30 seconds".
Sniping is a skill in planetside, yes, a SKILL. Every nubbin grabs a sniper rifle and wants to be the uber-l33t-snipez0r, but they soon become bored when they realise "OMG IT IS NOT LIEK TEH CS!!!" and go back to heavy assault. The REAL snipers (yes I would put myself in this catagory) know how to do it right. You DON'T fire if there's a possiblility they can shoot back, you DON'T fire at a M.A.X suit, and you DONT sit still for too long.
about 50% of my kills as a sniper are other snipers, the rest are either troopers who were wounded already (picking off the wounded is basically what snipers are for in PS) or Anti-Vehicle troopers who were too dumb or slow to move after the first shot hit them.
So to conclude, sniping in planetside rules. It isn't unbalanced, it isn't OMGBSHAX, but it IS effective if you use it right.
Yes, I am still hooked on PS. Look for Roadkill57, i'll be the one running you over in the marauder and then saying "Hi there" in voice macros. God I love doing that.
Of course, if you want real life, it should be pointed out in real life people do not continuously veer randomly, which happens in PS
Oddly enough your average player isn't exactly scared of a logo, since they have no clue what it stands for. Also, unfortunately, I don't really find the time to actually look at the logo of an incoming vehical in PS. I'm usually worried about my ammo, my health, and that guy shooting at me.
Last time I played PS it was still a base jumping game. Take outpost #1, move to #2, loss #1, move to #3, loss #2, take #1 back. Of course at each one there was little to no resistance.. maybe they've changed since the last time I've played. I'll dig around for my disks to try and reinstall.
Thanks for letting me know about the free days.
See you then!
The Terran Republic on Werner have finally got a system whereby you can simply join a channel, ask for a squad invite, and start killing stuff in a organised manner. Ask ingame for the server address, any decent outfit should have it.
And that's the other thing, GET A GOOD OUTFIT. A good outfit can make all the difference, I was ready to quit planetside until I found my current outfit. Two months later and i'm still loving it.
What's your TR Outfit?
I'm BobbyShaftoe: UniMatrix VS on Werner.
Is the thunderer really that overpowered as people are saying on the forums?
It's war. Get over it.
I'm not saying it's unbalanced. Maybe it isn't. What I'm saying is that if you must make sniping STUPID to make it balanced, it doesn't belong in that game at all.

Last time I checked, TS was your standard deathmatch game.
Well, standard + slow mo, kung fu, and stunts.
Are you my long lost brother?

TR outfit is Battle Marines of Chaos, lead by Ostekake who is the king of organisational shenanigans and battle tactics. If you see an armada of 50 Galaxies coming towards you, you can bet he had some part in arranging it.
And I have no idea what you mean by the Thunderer.... Marauder perhaps? If that's what you mean, no it isn't purely because of it's low health.
Just to add my twigs to the fire, in CS you're at least able to see the sniper most the time as distances are usually alot less then 100 metres with no trees, rocks even vehicles in the way and you can shoot back and do some damage, in PS there's a thing called damage degradation on most grunt weapons...
Basically you'll do full damage to around 20 metres then it will tail off, at 150-200 metres you're doing only armour damage to someone, a Bolt Driver (Sniper) does full damage along the whole length of their shot, 300+ metres...DD might be getting looked into to allow grunts to reach out further without having to resort to sniper rifles or Anti-Vehicle weaponry.
Anyway, get a targeting implant and pick off the people at 75% health...
You think doing 75 health damage (+some armour damage) at all ranges sucks?
