<div class="IPBDescription">what's the best solution?</div> Hey guys, I already run quite a few websites on my own slackware machines at home.
In the past I've been using register.com to handle all domain resolution, but I'm reaching the point where the cost is becoming quite obvious.
Just today I thought up a new domain that I just *had* to have, but all 3 (.com .net and .org) are open and I want to secure all 3.
What's the cheapest solution out there for registering domain names? And with each of those services, what do YOU end up doing to actually get the names resolved? Run your own DNS servers? If so, can someone point me to a good HOWTO on setting up my own DNS server for linux? I assume that there's some really good software out there for it, but I haven't the foggiest clue what names to even look up.

Nobody's got anything?
I promise to let this be the only bump.

can't tell you how good it is though...
Domains for $7.85, a buck cheaper than GoDaddy.

most popular.
after poking around a bit, a friend of mine pointed me towards a hosting site that referred me to namecheap.com
It's $8.88, but with that extra bit of money they do the DNS hosting as well (which is why I stayed with register.com for so long). I'm testing it out with one of the 3 domains I wanted to secure now.
www.namecheap.com worked out good for registering the domain and hosting the nameservers for $8.88 a year (honestly, 1 more buck per year isn't gonna make the difference whereas the $26/year I'm saving does).
For the actual webspace hosting, I signed up with <a href='http://www.WebHostingBuzz.com' target='_blank'>http://www.WebHostingBuzz.com</a> with their obscene deal of 2GB storage and 50GB transfer for $7 a month.
I decided to go with such high amounts of transfer because apparently with webhostingbuzz.com I can use this same plan for all the domains I host. So I'm gonna end up hosting like 6 sites on that one plan once I get it all figured out <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Now I just gotta figure out what I'm gonna actually <b>do</b> with my new domain: <a href='http://www.0x01A4.com' target='_blank'>http://www.0x01A4.com</a>
<a href='http://0x45.0x49.0xA4.0xA2' target='_blank'>http://0x45.0x49.0xA4.0xA2</a>

I think you missed the point of the hex there.
It's not the ip address of the server, the actual domain is registered as 0x01A4.com for that number's spiffy significance.

Ah, n/m then <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
(Oh yea, namecheap is pretty good, I have voogru.com & .net on them.)

I don't get it. I am not 0x539 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
^.
And what does this mean in lay terms?
the 0x is just a programming thing to signify that the number is in hex.
I don't know exactly what I'm going to actually do with the domain/webspace yet. But there's definetly an untapped niche of internet savvy slackers that it could appeal to if promoted correctly.
Though I'd have to get off my arse first...
4/20 (aprl 20th) is global smoke up day
a 4 20 is suposedly the police referance for a weed bust (though not sure if this is real)

Not that this really has a bearing on the hex or superstition related to 420:<a href='http://faculty.ncwc.edu/toconnor/polcodes.htm' target='_blank'>A police code listing</a>.
[granted, the myth is for California, and this page is (assuming from the web address) North Carolina]
Also found a big list of 420 related myths on some website... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> Along with some site that was selling a shirt with 420 in hex (it was like jinxhacker.com or something, wasn't paying attention).
Er...yea...can't help you with domains...I've never felt the need to make a webpage <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> .
