Lag Spikes When Fighting Marines/aliens

I get 30-400
Ok I can get like 30 ping when i'm not attacking a marine or anything. But when there's alot of attacking and killing with the warfare I get this insane amount of lag cuz my ping jumps up to 400 even to 500 but after i die the ping drops down to 50's or depending on the server. I went to a cs server and played didn't get the lag spike when i was in combat vs t and ct's. It just seems that when there are alot of things moving around in motion and stuff it lags me.

Oh also I never had this problem till beta 4. Oh if it helps this was a comp i built myself.I also downloaded the newest version Catalyst for my graphics card.

I have a similar problem, didn't see anything about it in the stickies. I have a good enough system to play farcry and painkiller multiplayer but it can't seem to handle ns atm. Maybe this is a Steam problem?

2 gig p4
1 gig DDR RAM
radeon 9600
windows xp

open gl 1024x768
I tweaked some settings as suggested in the tweaking hl guide and have got it down to jumping 40-150, but it never did that before and I'm wondering why the jump?

edit realized it was rather vague

double edit, more info

Neither of you have posted what type of internet you use, aswell as what ISP you use.

As for unscene a 40-150 ping is good i play with a 200-500 ping in firefights, i would kill for a ping as low as 150.

200-500? how can you play?(no offense) I have cable, I used to be on campus and play there but I had the same probelm there so I don't think it's my provider. It just all of a sudden started happening and it's really killing me.

This has started happening to me just recently (2 or 3 days ago).

Pentium 4 2.8 ghz
ati radeon 9700 pro -opengl 1280x1024
512 ram
cable modem connection
Half-Life - Counterstrike client
steam
not using EAX
NS version beta 4a

I would usually get nice pings around 50-100 which is perfect. But now every minute or so (regardless of attacking or race in the game) i get "stuck". Everybody else is frozen too...and about 15 seconds later its back to normal again...then stuck...etc. After about 4 times of this it freezes long enough for the "WARNING: Connection Problem" text to appear. I play on a wireless home network, which has been working fine until now. I've tried restarting the router and even restoring it to factory default settings but I still get this problem. For the few that have the lag spikes in action, try reinstalling NS. I'v had this problem in 2.01 and reinstalling fixed it for me, may fix it for 3.0b4a.

And what kind of router do you have chewy

Belkin Wireless Router 802.11b

There are two problems here.

1) GreenStorm has lag problems *only when attacking*
Possible causes:
>Rendering issues with player models. Custom models?
>Graphics card drivers. Unlikely.

2) Chewycheese has like spikes at more random intervals.
Possible causes:
No, let's rephrase that.

Almost certain cause:
C***py Beklin .b standard router.
I mean, dude, is RJ45 cabling really that ugly? You get over 10* the speed... Sigh.

and the .b standard?
and beklin?

/me voices vendetta against wireless routers and beklin in general.

Ahem.
On a more constructive note, do you get lag spikes in any other game, or during downloads?
Could it be someone else on your network, (including some WarChalker,) is using your bandwidth?
Do you use Wireless phones at home?

I know I have not really listed any solutions here, but I hope you can find some answers from my queries.

I have been using the router since march and it was working perfectly fine until now. I'm thinkin about doing a system restore just so this will work

Whoa whoa whoa - this stinks of incorrectly set rates.

Before doing ANYTHING, go check your rates. If you have broadband, then they should be set at 8000-9999

If its set at like 3000, then hang your heads in shame.... Its something that happens when patches are installed.

to check your rates, type rate in console

To change your rates type "Rate 9999" or whatever number you wish in console.

yeah I did the rate thing before I posted, it allows me to play on a few servers(in which i have 30-40 ping ) but most servers either lag all of the time(even servers I used to be able to play w consistnent ping) or jump at inoppertune moments.

edit, going to try reinstalling, maybe some variable or state was reset that I can't access directly.

double edit: nope, still awful, maybe there will be an answer tomorrow.

Well before you do please try a tracert to your isp's homepage.

I was on these forums complaining for ages until I realised that Comindico was fisting my connection, giving me shocking packet loss and it had nothing to do with NS at all....

Just dont want you having to go through all that re-installing trouble for nothing if your isp is being poor

You probably know how to already, but just in case:

to do a tracert click start, all programs, accessories and then msdos prompt

type in tracert www.yourispshomepage.com and post what you get. It should have pretty low consistent pings.

that's probably what it is, I was hoping for a "simple" fix. (like rate) but I'll trace it tomorrow to see.

i get a different type of lag.... once every few minutes on most servers (i play on Australian servers and i am in Australia).. i get this major lag spike(from 50ping to over 5k or even 10k ping) and i get this warning saying CL_Flushenitypacket.... and i just freeze for say like 10 seconds....
i can see everything do like normal.. but i cant move... then 10 seconds later.. it takes me back where i walked...

i dont get this problem in other games i play, nor i get it in CS or DoD or Firearms or Warcraft 3:FT...

ive been trying to solve this problem for ages, ive found out that it is "choke" packets being created (ie: i cant upload)..

im running on a amd 2600, 1 gig of ram, winXP pro.... and others arent needed to say...

connection: ISP: Swiftel, speed: 512/128Kbit DL/UL,
Modem: Alcatel speedtouch home with a netgear router on rj45 cabling.. (roughly 15 metres of cable),
yea and my network adapter is the Gigabytes gigabit network thing....

does ne1 have a solution to this???

Thats weird Zariel - I'm an Australian and I dealt with flush entity packets for 4 years of halflife online gaming, but that was on dialup.

I suggest using the forum search engine, as this is an extremely common problem, though I believed it to be unheard of on broadband.

scratch that - I did it for you

http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...&hl=flushentity

Read what steel troll has to say - apparently NS kept resetting his rates to 14.4k modem rates - check your rates and change them to like 9999 or something.

thanks for ur link... solved a bit of problems... but my selected internet connection speed is DSL>256K....

u said something about changing the rate to 9999??? where can i do that??? console?

This seems to be a server side problem on some servers so try a different server first to make sure it isnt that server having problems (i see a lot of problems which bb tend to get that i just ignore as i play on dial-up).

Zariel - you can change any setting in the console to any number but yes in the console change the rate to at least 9999 for a Broadband system.

other rates to consider
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmupdaterate 101

On my own computer, I don't have any trouble during firefights, its a
1.5 ghz
gf4 ti4800
512 RAM
XP Home

But on my brothers *NEW* one, I have this problem, and his is
3.0 ghz
Radeon 9800 Pro
512 RAM
XP Pro

We're both on the same router, same isp and everything, and I've set both rates to 9999. I'm very lost on why this is happening.

OK...i set my rate to 9999 and I still get the problem. It was set to 20000 before so I'm guessing it didn't matter.

I tracert'd my isp's homepage (comcast) and tthe result was 42 ms.

I changed the cl_updaterate/cl_cmdrate to 101 and it still gives me problems (was at 20 before).

I might be experiencing something different from everyone else. When I freeze up, everything around me stops moving but the models still move (ex a skulk who was walking isn't going anywhere but is walking in place). I can still look around with my mouse.

Any other suggestions?

Test NS on the computer that isn't directly connected to the router, so you know which it actually is.
• SpazzSpazz Join Date: 2004-02-04 Member: 26037Members
I wanna thank you fellas for the rate command.

I was having the problem where I would totally lag out in fire fights. I set rate to 9999 and i have no problem now.

Thanks guys.

I'm having a similar problem to chewy.
>I see an enemy

>They start walking in place

>My choke goes from 0 to 100

>Choke spike ends by an ally killing the enemy or enemy killing me

>Upon my death my choke goes back to 0 but my ping goes up by a few hundred ms for a second

>I'm on a 56k, with my cmdrate set to 30, updaterate set to 20, and rate set to 4000. My video is integrated, but I am getting anew video card soon. We'll see if that fixes it.

I've tryed a couple of things to make NS run correct again but nothing have helpet. I know one thing though but it's only for people with routers.

You should make a shortcun on you desktop for NS and then you sould klick on it and choose setting and add "+clientport 27007" after the shortcut name. You have to give the computers in a network different ports so that the router don't mess it up. I've heard that this works on routers but i don't have a router so that's not the solution in my case.

updaterate should be lower in bigger games. and fps modem should be capped because the higher the fps, the more bandwidth youre using.
• Amped1Amped1 Join Date: 2003-02-08 Member: 13287Members
Yeah. Changed my updaterate to 15 (from 20) and I now only have high choke in large sized games.
