I suspect there is a larger population of women playing games who explicitly avoid this(even if it means avoiding voice comms) just because they don't want to be treated differently or badly by annoying teenagers.
edit: but the truly sad people is the annoying teenagers pretending to be women. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

define obvious?
There are different types of names.
There is the 'not taking a male name b/c I am not male' (like gem ussing amy or jemma) There is the 'Hi I'm a girl' (KylieGirl, though If I remember that is a RL nick...) Then there is the 'Hi I am a 30 year old guy from sandusky' (SexKitten etc, and to a lesser extent things like Kylies nick)
Alot of girls play under female names simply b/c they are female (wierd aint it) My house mate usses Dalassa, a sort of female sounding name.
Some girls play under names declaring them to be female as a statment (hey look, chicks CAN kick your arse in vidoe games)
Some girls play under obvious female names b/c they like the antention.
And Some guys play under female names b/c they: like the attention/Think it is 'cool'/are psychos waiting to kill you/Just prefer to make female chars (my other housemate does this)
Yah, just remember, alot of those 'females' are NOT And alot of those other 'guys' are.

Nobody knows if most women hide their gender, because they're hiding it. Actually, I believe that most people that name themselves something like 'PrettyPrincess' or 'HotGurl' are actually guys.
I've named myself stuff like "CutiePie69" in HLDM and proceeded to school everyone and call them **** and cuss excessivly. Quite funny actually, nothing like the shock factor of a "girl" saying "Hey smacktard have you ever even played this game before?"
That being said 51% of our population is female, so I'm assuming there is a lot of non gender defining names out there.
K, its suddenly like I'm the only nerd that has interacted with females before. I bringeth you the revelation that these species are as capable of making light of thy internets anonymity as much as you, with names of any kind.
I know its really shocking. Females are fully able to operate a keyboard and create a nickname for whatever type of attention they're currently craving, or the image they'd like to create. So just like your male Teenangster calls himself "4554SS1N!!", the female counterpart can be anything equally out of place.

It shouldnt matter wether or not the player is a women or not. The fact of the matter it doesnt matter sex the person is. It's people that blow this out of proportion when you hear a women talk over mic. We dont go nuts when a little kid gets on, maybe its time for people to understand that there are more than just males that play games. So get over it.

As for girl gamers, I think the comedy occurs when (as with any 'minority' [whether actually one or not]) differential treatment isn't wanted, yet is.
99% of girl gamers I know are really cool (and one I know of happily kicks my ***** [waves to Athena]) people, and I don't see them as any different. The only kicker is the ones you meet who want to be treated the same, yet identify their difference at every opportunity.
N.B C'mon, if I formed a 'Men Only' gaming clan, how long before I received hate mail, do you think? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Oh yeah, on topic. Most of them aren't, the few that are sometimes just want people to know because the only attention they get is from the Intarweb, and fewer still just want people to stop asking them, so they say it often to keep them from spamming stupid questions.
I think that Girls take girly sounding names in the same way that guys often take blokey sounding names.
Mine has caused me some trouble before, I used to visit the odd chat room when I was younger (had this name a LONG time) and was always getting A/S/L from 'Mr Large' and other similar sounding names.
I would always point out that a) I'm male, b) always happy to chat, have you seen <i>x</i> on the news?
They normally wouldn't reply back... wonder why?
Losers, if your on the pull go do it in real life, its messier but alot more fun <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyway, maybe female gamers in FPS and RTS games make their gender obvious to be different. It's always nice to actually be noticed by other gamers.
Male FPS/RTS gamers are forced to express their uniqueness in other ways, like bad jokes and profuse swearing.
There are different types of names.
There is the 'not taking a male name b/c I am not male' (like gem ussing amy or jemma)
