    WOAH. NO. stop.

im not dissing anime because its bad, im dissing it and keeping a bad mindset about it because i know that if i went and watched some with an open mind, i would get addicted.

anime is a huge bloody addiction, so much stuff to watch, takes up so much time, its very expensive if you buy the DVD's, and another thing [dont judge my stance on this, but it might be important to you] some people might go "er, you watch anime?" and get an impression off that

i mean, its your choice, but i think i just ought to get a note in about how its a huge change to your life if you get addicted <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

anything that Rumiko Takahashi has done is awesome: ranma 1/2, maison ikkoku, inuyasha etc. ah you could check out some unliscensed fansubs and check out ratings at animenfo.com - try to figure out what genres you like best. check out <a href='http://www.animesuki.com/' target='_blank'>anime suki</a> for unliscensed fansubs -

for your reference dub usually refers to english dub over- there mostly horrible -
and sub is english sub w/original language -

oav/ova same thing - stands for original anime video -

Well my brother just bought the boxset of Cowboy Beebop because we finally decided we wanted to watch an unbutchered version of it. So far its really damn good.

For starters I'd recomend just watching classic movies instead of series, a lot less commitment and you get a whole story in about 2 hours.

    Akira
    Ghost in the Shell
    Ninja Scroll
    M.D. Giest
    Vamp Hunter D.

    good places to start.

Actually, it's more like any other TV show that airs in any country. You don't have to watch every single series, just like nobody is forcing you to watch every single sitcom that airs on American TV. The only difference is that this is distributed in digital form over the Internet and fans of this anime subtitle it for other fans. I watch a few series once in a while because I enjoy anime, but I don't go crazy over it like you're describing.

Anyway, if you're looking for a romance-comedy (Don't judge them by the American movies. Ugh.) that is still unlicensed, check out Midori no Hibi. They're up to episode 8 right now since it's still airing every week. Usually the raw episodes are released on Saturdays and the subbed releases from Anime-Empire are out on Mondays or Tuesdays. IM me if you want a link.

And for good measure, all the series I've watched and completed so far:

CWAG, it's a little bit difficult to provide recommendations because anime is a medium, rather than a genre. So if we suggest something which wasn't at all what you were prepared for, it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth (so to speak).

What genres of TV\movies do you watch? I ask because there's little point in providing recommendations for anime considered to be part of the canon if you simply aren't going to enjoy them.

[edit]But, come to think about it, it's worth giving you some notes on Naruto, since you asked. It's quite popular at the moment and as far as I know it is unlicensed. It's about a young ninja named Naruto, and his adventures. By the way, we're talking about the secret-magic-power kind of ninja, rather than the sneaks-around-in-the-shadows kind of ninja.

Anyway, the action sequences are excellent, a fair amount of effort has been put into developing the setting, and there is good use of humour. Personally (<i>please</i> remember, this is just my opinion), there's faaar too much pointless posturing and what I like to call "p***-farting around" in between the good bits. The patterns are also a little too predictable.

For example, the two master ninja will stand there for ten minutes looking badass and making threats about how the other has played right into their hands and is going to die. Finally, one will attack the other using some impressive ninja technique, often involving special effects. Now one of two things will happen: either the recipient of the technique will gasp in amazement that their opponent was stronger or smarter than they realise, or they will smirk and effortlessly negate the attacking technique, and respond in kind. Now take ten minutes out for a flashback, more pointless posturing, rinse and repeat. A flashback is <i>inevitable</i> if anyone actually gets hit.

    It's a bit like this:
Ninja A: Ha! You're going to die!
Ninja B: Oh yeah? Well <i>you're</i> going to die!
Ninja A: Oh yeah? Why's that?
Ninja B: Because I'm going to kill you!
    Ninja A: Oh? How's that?
Ninja B: Because of my secret super technique!
*cut to a flashback explaining how Ninja B was born with a super secret inbuilt technique*
Ninja B: My super ninja power is better than yours!
Ninja A: Nuh-ah! My super ninja power is better than yours!
*either Ninja A or Ninja B manages to wound the other. Let's say B wounds A.*
Ninja A: Owww! You hit me! Now while I clutch my chest, here's another flashback about when I was a boy.
*flashback explaining that Ninja A grew up evil because all his family were killed\ his dog ran away\he was dropped on his head as a baby*

Ninja B: Ah. Now I see why you are evil. But now, it's time for you to die.
Ninja A: Aha! You've fallen right into my trap! Now <i>you're</i> going to die!
    Ninja B: Oh? Why's that?
Ninja A: Because of my super secret ninja powers!...

Rinse and repeat for some six or seven episodes. I'm not exaggerating. I've seen six episodes in a row in the same battle, without the scene changing once, with nobody managing to kill or incapacitate anyone else because they were too busy posturing, relating stories about their childhood, or explanations of why they are so powerful!...

....but, that said, it might be right up your alley. Lots of people think it's fantastic. It's just that I'm not one of them.

Let me add my point of view: i dont hate animes/mangas (although they do lack a complex scenario most of the time, and have a typically Japanese way of borrowing ideas/concepts they dont understand), what i DO hate is people (generally anime maniacs) who thinks that japanese modern culture sums up to manga/anime; that s just plain wrong, and that s VERY irritating. Mangas and animes are a very very small part of the population of Japan, and they are for children and what they call otaku (which hasnt the same meaning as a nerd for Japanese). And, while talking of that, the term otaku was coined by Gainax, which i am sure will ring a bell to animes fan.
  • TestamentTestament Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4037Members
And after a long debate on the OtakuVengeance forums we somehow came to the conclusion that the direct translation of Otaku is house.

    Don't even ask.

it is the vocabulary term "otaku" is indeed the polite form of house, rarely used nowadays.

I wouldn't call myself a buff or anything but I've watched a few and have others to watch.
    LIST TIME
    Akira (duh)
    Cowboy Bebop
    Full Metal Panic!
    Escaflowne (currently watching)
Hellsing (flatmate is curently watching and I will be stealing once he's finished)
    END LIST TIME

Cowboy Bebop is quite easy to watch and is IMHO very good and I would recommend it as a first view (I watched Akira first and enjoyed it but many people don't like it and base their entire judgement of anime on that one film)
CB is like...an actiony comedy type thingy with quite a nice little plot running throughout and is ncie to watch just to see if you like the style really.

As always, I highly recommend Hayao Miyazaki's works to people.

    <a href='http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/films/#film_g_m' target='_blank'>a list of them</a>

All the studio ghibli movies i've seen are extremely good, high quality, and thought-provoking.

If you want mindless killing **** though, or extreme amounts of fanservice/sex appeal, you probably need not apply.

My first anime personally was Guyver, which was extremely bloody, Ranma, which I hate, and Fist of the North Star, which was extremely bloody as well.

    My favorite non-Ghibli serie/movies are

    Fushigi Yuugi (The Mysterious Play)
    Aa, Megami-sama (Oh! My Goddess)
    Shinseiki Evangelion (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Slayers and Slayers Next, the rest are kind of...not as good.
    Excel Saga

there are lots of other good ones that i haven't seen in their entirety or at all, so yeah.

    *edit* other cool series -
Hellsing - about vampires. very surreal, but in a bad-**** way!
Kanon - girly. but it makes you think, as long as you're not too focused on the cute chix0rz.
Record of Lodoss War (OAV version) - Standard fantasy plot
Mahoromatic - Funny. mild nudity, beware.
Vampire Hunter D 2001 - Totally sweet animation

I, myself, am a big Gundam fan. If your into Gundam, check out Gundam SEED if you can (American Cable/Sat has it showing Cartoon Network on Adult Swim, I have heard).

If you are too lazy to spend the money (ohnoes, is he going to suggest illegal downloading...?!?!?!?), WinampTV has channels that show anime. Might wanna check out there and see what you can find.

    And...

On the subject of the "super secret nija powers"... that only happens in stuff like the DragonBall series(es?) (DB DBZ DBGT DBABC DBXYZ DBZGTDBZ...blah blah blah). Yea, I used to watch it, but you can only watch a powerstruggle for so many episodes before your like "Blow his *censored for youger viewers* head off you *censored* *censored* *censored* *censored* *censored* *censored* *censored* *censored^3434* moron!" But I guess DragonBall is an aquired taste, like tofo or something.

Once you've seen 3 or 4 series, see the best of them all- Evangelion. Its downright amazing. Other than that, I highly reccomend Cowboy Bebop, for pure style factor.
