Anti Virus Software...

What is the best Anti-Virus software? I've used Norton Anti-Virus 2002 since....well, 2002! Anyway, I've been getting all these worms like everyday, and I've about had it with norton.

Microsoft has a free anti virus software I think, but I dont know if its any good. What does everyone use here? What would you recommend?

(btw: I have a virus I think, check out my CPu usage. svchost.exe uses 95% of my 2.4ghz.....f***ing viruses.)

    I use AVG; they're... alright... I suppose.

My god now I have forgotten their web address. Well you can search for it I suppose. Also there is an online virus scan available at the Trend Microcillin website.

Housecall is online only and free, so it won't eat away your valuable pc resources. I love it.

Youre working with a trade off. You can either have a antivirus eating up system resources scanning everything constantly, or, as in youre case I suspect, you can have one which doesn't prevent viruses and such, but it does remove them. Basically, its your own fault. Sorry, gotta be blunt with it.

Free, web based anti virus. Pure goodness.

And btw, it is extremely rare that virus eat so much cpu, click on the processes tab and show us what process(es) are eating the most. 31 processes on start-up (if i guess right you did that screenshot right on powering up the computer) is also too much for my taste.

At the moment I use this:

    FREE
    -Avast Virusscanner

    -Zone Alarm
(The Pro edition comes with a VERY good popup/banner blocker,
    requires $$$ though)

USE HOUSECALL DO NOT USE AVG...

AVG Caused some serious problems for my system and DIDNT find viruses where Housecall did. I urge you to use Housecall

Note that you can't use housecall on firefox, you need to run it through IE.

I have to agree with the AVG here is a link to get the free it works just as well. You might want to look into getting zone alarm, very good firewall if you dont allready have one.

Yes.. I use Housecall when I am able to get on the internet when I can't due to stupid virii activity I then use my AVG or my PC cillin which came with the computer. I must say between the three of them I have never had a virus for more then 10 seconds after I was aware of it.

Side note, NEVER EVER EVER EVER let anyone download something on your computer if you do not know where they are getting it. GG FRIENDS>>>
    Hehe

Oh.. I use a router and Zone alarm for my preventable trojan attempts

Also, get a firewall. ZoneAlarm is pretty good, even on default settings.

One more thing: Use windows update. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Check for updates once a week and always install the critical ones.

takes 2 hours to scan and i can't do anythig while scanning

but i do seem to have system idle process claiming to take up 77% currently, although my pc is running normally
  • CForresterCForrester P0rk(h0p Join Date: 2002-10-05 Member: 1439Members, Constellation
System Idle Process is a continous loop program. Basically, it takes up whatever unused CPU cycles you have.

For the people who use the free online housecall thing, how often do you scan? Once a day?

    TROJ.REVOP.A

    C:\do.exe
    C:\Program Files\pup.exe
    C:\Program Files\over.exe
    C:\Windows\pup.exe
    C:\Windows\System\bdl******.exe
    C:\Windows\Cookies\offeroptimizer.com
    C:\Windows\Cookies\xlime.offeroptimizer.com

The ****** indicate random digits in the filename. The bdl file will create more files with random filenames. Files that were installed by Troj.Revop. A will have what looks like a popup window with a green top being viewed from a diagonal view as an icon. DO NOT CONFUSE THESE WITH REQUIRED WINDOWS FILES!. Required files will have a blue top, not green, and they will be straight. The longer you go with this Trojan on your computer, the more random files will be created! Before you delete these files, press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard to open the task manager. Find "over", "do" or "pup" in there, and end task. Now you can go and delete the files. For me, there was one random file in C:\Windows\System that wouldn't delete. To delete this file, you will need to delete the registry keys that were created. Go into the registry editor by clicking Start»Run. Type in "regedit" (without the quotes) and click Enter. The following Registry Keys were created by Troj.Revop.A:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE»Software»Microsoft» Windows»CurrentVersion»Explorer»pup

Delete "pup". Also delete the registry entries from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE»Software»Microsoft» Windows»CurrentVersion»Run that have the trojan's filenames in them. You can get more information on Troj.Revop.A here

As for firewalls, for the love of god dont get Norton Internet Security. The new version actually detects Norton AntiVirus as a trojan in some scans. That and the fact that ZoneAlarm is free and consistantly better. A hardware firewall (like a cheap-o router or old linux box) is also a pretty good idea. No more sasser or blaster
