If you decide to watch something else, you may get more japanese culture than you can understand/enjoy. I've found that it takes a while to get used to. I think anime newbies should stay away from comedies or dramas at first.

as many will state, there are personal preferences in anime... for me, my first was Cowboy BeBop....
i loved BeBop, and it is a nice contrast between the japanese style, and american style. i still say that the dubbed version, is equally nice as the subtitles (i'm a subtitle freak)
second, i found Trigun... this takes you more towards the japanese style of things, but still has familliar elements if your an american. Very nice voice acting in the subtitled versions, but i dispise the voice actors for the dubbing.
At this time i took an animation class, and was exposed to all kinds of things, Akira (not the one with the red bike) was nice, but got me confused, and Gungrave...
Having conqured GunGrave, i struggled to find something to match the excitement and style.

As for suggestions....I'm not a huge anime fan (mainly because I've seen very few) but anyway o FLCL (Crazy, random, hillarious miniseries by Gainax) o Neon Genesis Evangeleon (Serious, crazy, huge-mecha-fighting anime by Gainax, yet again) o AKIRA (This is probably the definitive anime movie that got a large majority of people interested. Can get pretty complex and confusing at times, though...And Kaneda has the coolest bike EVAR.)
Obviously, they're both not for everybody's taste, but meh. I enjoyed them immensely.
First anime I ever saw was Robotech (If anyone ever watched the Robotech on Toonami when it was like 5 seconds old). Found it entertaining enough, with a storyline good enough, to get me hooked on the medium.

Mangas and animes are a very very small part of the population of Japan, and they are for children and what they call otaku (which hasnt the same meaning as a nerd for Japanese). And, while talking of that, the term otaku was coined by Gainax, which i am sure will ring a bell to animes fan.

Erm... Sorry to be so blunt, but where did you get those ideas?
It's of course true that anime is not the end-all of Japanese culture, but claiming that it has the same position as the western comic book / cartoon is either an incredible overestimation of the significance of western comics, or an insult to the significance of animes. They are, as others pointed out along the way, part of the popular Japanese culture in the same fashion American TV shows are over here. Not more, not less.
As for the term 'Otaku', I might be mistaken, but I think it's a little older than Gainax (there was a grisly 'Otaku murder' performed by a social recluse somewhen in the early 90s in Japan), although I'm inclined to agree that the contemporary definition of 'harmless dweeb' stems from Gainax.
CWAG, while you are looking at animes, I also advise to take a look at Akira Kurosawa's movies. True they aren't animes, but very good movies in their own right. Since you like satire/dark comedy, I strongly recommond Yojimbo, a very dark and humorous samurai film. You should be able to find it at video rental places under foriegn for two or so dollars since it's an old black and white film, also try to see if they also have Ran, a samurai take on Shakespeare's King Lear.
My recommondation for animes is that like nearly all fields of entertainment such as american TV or movies, is you have to wade though a bunch of medicore examples for find the ones you truely like. This is especially true for animes.

My recommondation for animes is that like nearly all fields of entertainment such as american TV or movies, is you have to wade though a bunch of medicore examples for find the ones you truely like. This is especially true for animes.
End Of Evangelion sucked.
