For the commander's sake
Well to conserve space on the forums we should just use this topic for al commander related strategies. After playing as a commander in nearly everygame so far. I've found out numerous little strategies that work well. And I'll share them with you.
1. Resources are really important. Without them you can't build anything. So what you need to do is go to the nearest resources and put towers on them. Then defend them with atleast 4 turrets per tower.
2. Don't expand beyond what you can hold onto. If you spread all of your things out too much and have no safe zones connecting them it's pretty difficult to accomplish anything. So make sure that in every major hall way junction you set up 2 turrets per direction possible. This should slow or halt enemy movement and give your soldiers a clear path to their destination.
3. Don't take S*** from anyone. If your soldiers are yelling at you to do something don't get nervous or angry. Just tell them you will do it as soon as you get done with the other things you're working on.
4. Don't drop ammo and life everywhere. For ammo just use an armory unless really neccessary like an attack on a hive. For health try to keep a good dump of it in each base, that way your soldiers can find it easy and heal quickly. If they are standing still and really need it drop it on them directly. But if they are fighting something don't give it to them. Because most of the time it will be too late.
5. Phase gates. You should set these up between important parts of the map.
6. Sieges, when you find an enemy hive you should build a turret factory outside of the area's walls. And put 2-4 turrets around it. Then upgrade it and add a few siege turrets. Those should take out the hive while your soldiers defend your turrets or attack the hive.
7. On guns and ammo. Try to provide your soldiers with decent weapons and an armory at your base. But don't go out of your way to give them a gun when all they do is walk out and get themselves killed.
8. Upgrading. When deciding what to upgrade at the arms lab. Armor is probably the best choice. After all who needs a huge gun if you die too fast to use it?
9. Welding and repairing. Repairing your structures (especially turrets) is extremely important. And tell your soldiers to weld and open grates that aliens can use when they see them. Stopping their movement makes things much easier.
10. You aren't god. So don't act like you are any better than they are. Being a soldier is difficult too. Maybe not as difficult as commander but it is difficult. So be kind to your soldiers.
11. Give easy directions. If you want your troops to go somewhere select them and give them a waypoint to follow that they will be able to find easily. Then make another to a place in the direction of where they need to go. You know where they are and where they are going on the minimap. They don't.
12. Mines. Mines can be very effective as not only defense but warning. If you hear them go off then you know something is coming or something just died. So put some down when you have time.
13. Build a backup CC. You might need a backup cc if you have a few decent bases. One might be attacked and if you have no CC, then you're pretty well screwed. So keep one around just in case.
14. Aftermath of a hive death. When you kill a hive you'll need to make sure that you seal it up good with turrets. And in fact make a whole new base. Complete with a CC, infantry portal, armory, turret factory, and a phase gate. Those are the bare essentials. Doing this keeps you sure which hives are active and which ones are not.
15. Have patience. I know that after everytime you build something it seems to get destroyed you start to get really annoyed. But you have to just keep on improving what you build and try new things until you get it right. If you don't want to play anymore quit the whole game. Don't just play as a soldier and expect that you will make a big difference. Atleast if you quit out all together you can go out on a good note.

Keep a squad of marines nearby the nozzle until you can build a turret factory.
Marines are like animals, sometimes they need to be trained to obey.
Anyhoo, commanders should listen to their troops a LOT. Most commanders can't keep a grip on happenings alone even if they think they are. The most influential leaders I have seen in a marine squad have been my squadmates, and the commander just gave us support and followed our orders. And it worked too; we stomped the aliens in less than 20 minutes.
Still, a commander that could lead would be nice. A tip to commanders: learn the map as a marine before you jump in the CC. It looks very different from your nano-cams than it does on the frontline. Oh, and get a ####### mic. There is nothing more annoying than a go-it-alone commander that will not communicate directly.
Now, I know that marines #####. A lot. The first few minutes I played I did too, untill I realized what an ### I was being. Many marines think that the commander should pay special attention just to them, and no one else, and always prevent them from dying. They need to accept that in most situation where conflict is involved, especially if they are off on their own, they will die. Period. That's what infantry portals are for.
Marines do need to help out their commander, but by saying that I mean that they need to actually help. Marines telling the commander where the hot spots are can be very usefull; marines acting like 3rd graders with ADD, screaming at their commander for "guns! armor! guns! armor! do this! do that!" are not helping at all.
