Mouse-only Lag?

I have no other word for it.
Athlon XP 1700+
GeForce FX 5200 with the drivers just before the 56.72's, because those caused me some crashes
Windows XP
Mouse is a Trackball Explorer. (Don't look at me that way. It works fine. **** off.)

I've played just fine with all this stuff before without any problems, and the first time I encountered it I virus scanned, defragged and updated, with no change. I don't know if this occurs with any other mod or not, because I haven't played any other mod in like... forever. It happens on every server I've been to.

Basically, it looks alot like really bad lag, but it isn't. Everything is in working order, I can move around, build things, talk to people, everything at the normal rate. But anything to do with my mouse (ie, looking, turning, shooting) goes extremely slow and choppy. As I said, I thought it was lag at first. I've tried all manner of cl_ commands, they don't help. I don't know what else to do. What's wrong, and how do I fix it?

    I have the same problem.
Except it happens outside of NS aswell.
It's like the mouse is only sending info one or twice every second and so it jumps around a lot.

My mouse is a Logitech mouseman running on Microsoft drivers(death to mouseware). It is a USB mouse running on a PS/2 adapter, i tried switching it to the USB slot, but then the mouse wouldn't respond, and it still said it was a PS/2 mouse

I also encountered this problem, but it only happened today.

it could be a problem with steam

If you happen to be forcing triple buffering for openGL in the settings for your driver that may cause horrible mouse lag. It shouldn't but I've ran into before.

Run HL in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and the mouse lag goes. You'll have to kill the hl.exe process everytime you close it though, other programs run funny or not at all if it's still running.

If I were, (though I'm not even entirely sure what that is) how would I turn it off?

Actually your Mouse lag is most likely high "loss". I have the same problem and it really ticks me off when i have a nice steady 60 lag, and end up being killed by a skulk because my guy cant aim due to chopines and mouse lag. Type net_graph 3 in consol and if your loss ishigher then 0, then thats wahts causing the lag, mines a steady 3-4 now and it used to be 0 on WON.

I made a topic about this here

Someone posted a solution, but it didn't work for me. Mabye itll help you out though

Used netgraph, and this isn't a problem with loss. I did notice small fluctuations in choke, (range from 0-4, with rare spikes up to 8 or 9) but they seemed unrelated to the mouse lag. 0 loss the entire way through.

I have noticed that this seems to happen more on some maps than others, so this is definitely graphics/hardware/memory problem rather than a connection one. Seems to be the worst on ns_hera, but it's nearly absent on co_angst, and I didn't notice much on ns_caged, either.

Entirely false information. You can pull the cable out of the wall, give yourself an instant 100% loss and your mouse will move butter-smooth as ever. Your network settings do not in any way effect the feel of your client - you'll be able to turn and move on your client regardless of connection settings (well, until the timeout occurs, which freezes you in places with the big red "Warning Connection Problem" message). Feel free to type "rate 1" in console and prove me right

Edit : As for the problem here, check the other thread for some good tips. Otherwise try trial and erroring yourself by stripping away anything not necessary to launch Steam (only sound, vid, network and basic system drivers should be active).

May also want to reinstall your graphics card drivers. I'v had a similar problem in which i thought it was the mouse as you, but soon found out it was my graphics drivers. Reinstalling solved my problem.

I once suffered from mouse-lag, i found that switching from Direct3D to OpenGL in the video options fixed this. But my problem probably isnt the same as this.

I know that's not my problem, because I use OGL anyway.

In any case, I'm going to try the priority-wiggling thing, see if that works. Not right now though, because I'm playing this Blitzkrieg demo. It's schweet.

Well in mate! I use em too.
Far more accurate than a laser mouse that JUDDERS on the spot making you miss those all important match winning snipe shots on mohaa.

Dam u lasers getting so popular cos lasers are more sci-fi ish!!!! U still suck no matter what scientists say cos they dont play games as in depth as us!

Sorry if I've missed something, but aren't we missing the obvious?

    Trackball explorer.

    Ball mouse.

Crud? (Edit: I mean build up of crud, not that the mouse is crud)

raz0r says he has the same problem on windows too; therefore it's much more likely to be the mouse in his case. Driver problems, mouse speed settings, CPU useage, and of course, crud, should be looked into.

I predict that the world's switch from Ball to laser mice will leave an excess crud around houses that will slowly build up and take over the world by 2025.

I clean the crud out of this thing constantly. I'd know if that was the problem for one thing, and I'd have problems outside NS for another.

Well, I tried fiddling around with the priority for point32. No dice.

I know from experimentation that this is defintely related to the map I'm on. It seems to be worst of all on ns_eclipse. What could be causing this? My first instinct is to say that it's some graphics thing, but if that were true, wouldn't it affect all movement, rather than just mouse functions?

I have bad mouse lag too.
Its very annoying that I die all the time 'cause of it.
I have noticed that my mouse lag depends on how good the server is and how many players are nearby me.
If server is good and pings are like 40 with 18 players then mouse lag apperears only if we are rushing to hive or moving in group. But if I just go solo then there's no mouse lag at all. But it apperear immediately when some other marine comes with me and 3 skulks rush on us. My computer peeper goes nuts when this happens and I try to shoot the skulks.
This mouse lag doesnt happen when I am comm, which I usually am because I cant play properly with soldier or skulk.
I have tried to editing my videocard options etc. but nothing has helped
And when I try to use voice system when I comm my mouse just gets hold. It wont move in 5-10 seconds and if I try to press any button of my keyboard peeper goes nuts again.
But may this lag be caused because of just bad computer?
I got 1333mhz and 512sdram and Gforce 4 Ti4200 and I got enough space on my hard drive too (I think) Or is this because USB mouse cannot receive information fast enough ?

Any of you using nvidia drivers, I had really bad mouse lag. The fix I found is as follows:

Control Panel > Nvidia Desktop Manager>

In the Nvidia Desktop Manager Section make sure the desktop is disabled. You will know because all will be grayed out except the manager and Profile tabs.

Fresh XP install, and get some form of mouse lag too. It's generally smooth as silk, but then my controls seem to lock and I end up skidding across the ground while firing full auto. It does seem pretty notable in places like ns_eclipse's SAA.

Have a Intellimouse Optical and the 44.03 detonator drivers. I've tried with and without Vsync, as well as with the latest Intellipoint drivers. Haven't tried another game yet, but it doesn't happen in Windows.

Lowering the mouse sensitivity seemed to help a little bit, but I could be wrong on that.

This happened to me in UT2004...

    Guess the problem? The sound...

But the most incredible was... when was a 2d sound, it lagged incredbly.. when I've activated the 3D Sound (EAX I think) and It worked fine.. my 'mouse lag' stopped and my mouse is working great...

and, to remember: for sure it isn't the mouse itself... (except if it is with some hardware problem with the mouse...) - I have a Logitech MX500 and I got the problem....

REMEMBER: I got the problem in UT2004 - NOT in NS...
Just suggested this because it was hard to figure how to fix it...

btw, I have a ABIT NF7-S 2.0 - my sound board is nVidia nForce SoundStorm... Its a great sound board and I still got the problem, then, don't think that your sound board got problems or it isn't good enough..

Ah! I think that's probably it. I had been messing around with that thing a while ago because I thought it was something else. Hopefully this helps. I'll try some more later. If I can successfully make it from Eclipse to Maintenance in under about three minutes, I'll know it's at least partially fixed, because that's the map where this is worst for some reason.

I've had this same problem in a lot of HL mods. This is what I do. Start your favorite half-Life game then Crt-Alt-Del out to get to the Taskbar. Rightclick on hl.exe ,drop the system priority for it to low. That has solved all my HL mouse lag issues.

I have 2mb/512 adsl and changing that to 256 from steam internet options really helped. I suggest u guys try too. If it helps, please reply so we know was my problem unique or will it really help on everyone.
