yea...
I tryed to install UT2003 again, and When it's about 90% done, it tells me the media is scratched or damaged or somthing like that.

I got the game like... a while ago, but havn't had it installed for a while either... Anyway, is there anyway, without spending any money that I can get my comp to read the damaged part of the disk and install the game?

PS... Don't reply get UT2004...

I know you said you don't want to spend any money, but as long as the scratches aren't too deep, a five dollar scratch removal kit should fix that right up. If there are no scratches, then it's probably just covered in fingerprints or something, try wiping it with a damp cloth.

And as long as the scratches arent on the top of the media. It's creepy, but that little cd-label is where the data lives (at least in cheap CDs such as CDRs).

Get a little toothpaste (paste, not gel) on a cloth and rub from the center of the disk to the edges (not around the disk) while you slowly turn the disk. Add more toothpaste if you're running out as you go. Then wash the toothpaste off in water, dry the disk and try it again. Scratches that follow the circle of a CD are the dangerous ones, ones that go from the center to the edges are easily ignored by a cd reader. What we're doing with the toothpaste is trying to polish out the 'bad' scratches, so feel free to press hard or even do a couple rounds to get those scratches out.

I have heard that using a Hiliter can fill in the scratches on a cd, so give that a shot if the other remedies don't work.

Make sure, if you use toothpaste, that you get get all the toothpaste off afterwards! I tried it ages and ages ago, and it made by CD worse, until I realised that it wasn't meant to have that suspicious, chalky residue

Don't use chemicals on your cds (including highlighter).

If you want to clean it, a soft cloth and water are all you need, unless you've been dropping them in glue (see first part).

Otherwise, get a kit. It will save you a lot of trouble over whatever homebrew remedy you think of destroying it permanantly.

it's in the plastic, but the shiny reflective surface is right under the sticker/label and that's essential for correct use.

And for one of the oddest potential remedies:
    Lick it.

Seriously enough, I was having trouble reading a DVD to get backed-up data off again, and I noticed a couple of nasty scratches. I couldn't think of anything that would do the trick, didn't have time, or didn't want to bother with a repair kit... but saliva worked quite well for the few seconds (before boiling off under the laser) it took to read the sectors under the scratched area. Sure, it took a few tries... but it worked.

yea, the scretches on it are minimal, from putting it in and out of the cd holder.

But what I think is causing it is this little patch on the edge of the CD that looks as if somthing were spilled on it... I just hope that it is on the plastic and not the foil...

    Ehhh...little patch thing?

Elaborate a bit more on what it looks like. Seems like that COULD be the problem with it.

it looks like somthing sticky was spilt on it.... like syrup or somthing, but it's not sticky... if that helps?

Ehh.. no it's not. I can take the label off and show you the data on it.

Ok, check the bottom of the disk (you do know which the top and bottom of the disk are right? I've had a couple of incidents before where people couldn't distinguish the obvious =_=)

If you notice any slight discoloration, or major discoloration, then you are definitely screwed.

And if it sin't, it is likely this little patch thingy has corrupted some data on the disc.

I had an incident with my WC3 disk where coffee spilled on it, and well....it didn't work because the coffee seeped into the supposedly unremovable layers.

Nothing was spilled on it tho... And yes, I can tell the difference between the top and bottom, esp since this is not a burned CD and has only 1 shiny side...

I don't think anything was spilled on it... It's been in the same CD holder as all my other CD's and none of them are meessed up...
