a pre built hack in everyones game!
hey guys i was playing some weeks ago and i was cloaked, and believe it or not, this ONE guy saw all the cloakers. and i played with him a couple of times and he didnt hack. and he told me he uses his gamma at a high area so he can see the cloakers. so i was wondering if this is actually cheating, and if it is please fix. it is unfair to us.

    yes, it is an explot.

nothing can realy be done about it b/c those controlls need to be in there.

play on servers with better admins.

Even without setting your gamma high it is possible to see cloakers, albeit only when the alien slowly walks. The way that the cloaking is implemented makes it so that the flesh of the alien adapts to its background from whatever direction you are looking at it. However, when an alien moves, the flesh has to change itself. This causes a slight distortion, which shows the outline of the alien (usually a skulk). I've been called a hacker by noob skulks on many an occassion because of their lack of knowledge concerning the cloak ability. Basically, if you are a cloaked skulk playing against veteran players, you need to hide in dark areas and watch for the intelligent player that fires a few shots into the corners.

Actually I think the skulk cloak just works by lowering the alpha (is that the right one?) value for the model. It's gets dropped to something like 95% see through, so you are still visible to someone with sharp enough eyes. Also, you can be seen whether you are moving or not, just it's a bit more difficult when you are standing still.

When stood still in cloak mode you are COMPLETELY invisible. The person ur against is using a wallhack. Iv studied these wallhacks and aswell as showing ppl through walls, they also detect cloaked aliens asif they were never cloaked.

Ban him if you see that guy again, or request a ban from an admin. You have the proof.

EDIT: You and I both know that gamma isnt bright enough when set at max.

umm, actualy if my memorey serves me, you are still visable, even when compleatly motionless.

and tweaking things like gama to exploit all depends on your rig.

I CAN do it if I want (My gama in NSP is rather low, if I crank it I will get the washed out effects etc)

I have played since NS was released. Listen to me.

When the model becomes transparent, you can see through it BUT its like clear tinted glass, slightly tinted by the skin of the model. if you had a glass sphere tinted slightly green, the edges which cross over closer to the other edges are less transparent as the tint stacks up.

Attached is a TINY 4kb image demonstrating.

For an experiment, try getting some of that see-thru tinted paper and place another piece on it. The colour will darken.

In this manner, if you look closely you can make out the OUTLINE of the model, as the edging is darker than the body. This also makes the walls seem to 'bump out' when you look at them, giving the alien away, but only if you look very close.

Even knowing this, unless you know the alien is in the room, you need a keen eye to spot them. Some people are like me, and are just talented. Must have been all those "Where's Wally?" books i read as a kid...

I have been banned once myself for your kind of "hack" you describe. It ended up with the admin losing his priveledges, as it was secretly my server. So watch what you say.

nice explanation there! well i couldnt find that guy again, so i couldnt get a ban on him. and the admin said that he keeps changing his name so he cant really find him... so guys, please watch out for him and if you DO see him. Please notify me. the hack police i run all the hackers on a black list on a private web site which i can not reveal =)

There are ways to tweak gamma in NS. I used to have my gamma set higher for all HL mods, simply because I found it difficult to see even in "outdoor" based maps. I don't remember now how to up my gamma/brightness settings, because everything I've tried over the past few days just hasn't worked .

There's no reason to ban that guy, since there is no proof he's using a wall hack.

I seriously hope that Half Life 2 has godly anti-hacks built in, because I seriously hate always wondering if someone is hacking or not. The best players in CS can hit you through a wall, no hacks involved. The best players in NS can hit almost anything that walks, no hacks involved. And yet, there is always that chance, and that is what bothers me the most.

yeah i think hackers just ruin the game for themselves and especially for others.. it pisses me off to see people hacking, just because they suck. why cant they just keep practicing? i admit, i use to hack for cs with won. it started to suck.. so i quit hacking, practiced. got better, and eventually quit cs cuz it sucked

Well actually, gamma does improve your chances of spotting the cloakers as by making the areas behind the cloakers lighter makes their darker edges show up better.

I know this because when i played the Warcraft 3 addon for Counter-Strike i used to do that, coz level 3 invisibility made them evven more invisible than in NS.

I don't do that in Natural-Selection though because, well, not having recoil seems to give me the level of concentration needed to spot them ridiculously easily at normal gamma levels.
