<div class="IPBDescription">Which ones DONT work with HL</div> Well i'm looking into buying a GeXcube ATI RADEON 9800-XT 256meg TV DVI, GC-R9800XT-D3 with hl2 voucher.
Who has this card and plays HL without any of those horrid FPS drops I have been hearing?

Pretty soon the ATi x800 and the NVidia 6800 are going to come out and probably lop AUD$200 of the price of an 9800 - so you'd be waaayyy better off holding on to your money for a while. Also, before you get that puppy make sure you have a decent powersupply ie above 300W. I know its kinda basic but plenty of people forget stuff like that.....
Oh, and while you still get a free copy of HL^2, ATI withdrew their support (though they still have to honor the offer), so you can't get a boxed game, but you have to download it through Steam.
I say go for the card.
No problems here.
They're not driver based, but rather system-specific. I had a 9600XT which got 11fps in Marine Spawn (famously, as I moaned about it for weeks <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) Now my 9800Pro laughs, but there's still people on the Steam forums with problems with the exact same card.
From my own investigations, I believe it's specific mobo/card combination specific, but I've not found a discernable pattern.
If you've got a Via chipset mobo, you seem to have tripled your chances of the problem though. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I had a Ti4200, crappiest card EVER. I had problems so severe that I couldn't even start up windows without the card crashing. I'm now on a 9600XT, and I love it. ATi for the win.
If you have your heart set on the 9800XT now, like they said, wait untell the X800 comes out and save some $$$, or get the X800 instead <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well I wasn't planning on buying it NOW but rather a bit later(around octoberish) But thanks for all your help guys , I'm going for a 9800pro so I can get the best performance out of everygame, i'm sick of playing games on low D:.
No real problems in HL...although, if you're looking at a Turret farm, along with 16 marines and an Onos on the highest settings...well, then it slows down a little.
...Generally it's a solid 60+ frame rate otherwise.
...Then again, I only have 256mb of ram running Windows XP...so I'm sure if you've got more it'd run better. Anyway...no spontaneous FPS drops over here.
Solid 100fps (300 with developer 1, 600 on low gfx settings)
The X800 series is already available by the way... the local Fry's has the X600 and X800 XTPE available on the shelf. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> But not a GF6 in sight. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
And yet again. 'developer' gives pseudo-fps. The HL engine has a hardcoded limit of 100fps.
Marine look here. <a href='http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_list.php?maingroup=VIDEO%20CARD&secondgroup=ATI%20X800' target='_blank'>Game dude.com.au</a>

buh?
Im running HL on a Ti4200(64MB version) NS tends to get around 50-60fps while just walking around, but as soon as anything happens, it drops to 20-30, at which point it becomes almost unplayable.
My big comp upgrade can't come soon enough
New GFX card, prefferably a new mouse, as this one lags like a mofo, 2.0GHz CPU just doesn't cut it anymore, and i might get a new mobo, but i don't know how to chec k what kind of mobo i have right now :/
Whoa the second graphics card on that website costed more then my whole computer! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you have performance problems, make sure you disable Fast Write, as that completely fixed my problems. However, Windows 2000 had issues with rebooting when changing these settings, so it took awhile to make the changes stick.
Since ATI's newest cards are out on the market, you may as well take a look at them instead. Remember that motherboards are moving to the PCI-Express bus, which will make AGP obsolete.
Edit:
For those who think Half-Life can't exceed 100fps, I suggest you run in developer mode by typing "developer 1". This removes the 100fps cap on the fps_max cvar.
