Today, I Remembered Why I Love This Game.

Past few days, I've been having some pretty good games. Nothing to scream about, and interspersed with the usual stupid 'rines you always get in pubs, but good nonetheless.

Just two rounds ago, I had one of the best games ever. It was epic in scope, only the second or perhaps third like that since 3.0 started.

The scene begins as voogru changes to bast. As always seems to happen on bast, one person said "this map rocks," followed quickly by two saying "bast sucks." And so, it began.

Our comm relocated us to double. Many of us considered this a sign of bad things to come, but we stuck it out. Our relocate was successful, and then the fight for feedwater began. It ended about fifteen minutes later, when we finally had enough turrets in there to keep the Fade off our phase gate. It turns out our comm really wasn't all that great. He had a good plan, but if you ask me, he was incredibly weak sauce at helping us get it done. I must've asked for shotguns fifty times, but he'd have none of it, insisting that the HMGs he had given us were enough, not realizing that we were just pulling the fades to the brink of death, and if we had shotguns, they'd stop escaping. After a while, he started passing out heavy armor, and the alien siege began in earnest. We lived off those two res nodes for a very long time, just barely holding off attacks at both feedwater and base. We almost lost main a few times due to onos coming in before we put down mines, and fades were a constant problem in feedwater. Our attempts to sneak through the water and vents to either of the two hives failed, (I personally went through the vents to engine a few times, and almost made it, but didn't get enough meds.) and after a botched siege at refinery, the aliens walled off every exit point from our holdings. All seemed lost. But we kept on. With gls and sieges, we started clearing out the area around our base. A little before the hour mark, we were finally making some headway out of feedwater. A few people were finally surviving long enough to make the long trek down the tram tunnel to the refinery area. It was about this time we received some terrible news. The admin (who was an alien, little surprise there) had become fed up, and was putting a time limit on the game. We had ten minutes to finish up.

We already had some people on the way to refinery. We had already lost one heavy train there, but we had no time to do anything but rush. We were making our final push, do or die. We laid a phase gate and an armory outside, and started rushing in. Much like the rest of the game, we were always on the brink of failure, relying on our teamwork and catpacks to see us through. The hive finally went down. But there was one more.

Four minutes remaining.

Some people were trying to secure our new hive, but I knew we had no time. I rallied the troops for another rush, and we marched on engine room. We cleared main aft, and surged to the front, ready to siege. Three minutes remaining. We weren't going to have time. I phased back to base and begged the commander to spend the last of his res on shotguns, knowing we weren't going to be able to take it down with what we had. I phased back in, joining the rest of the rush, and emptied my clip into the bottom of the hive. Just as a skulk cut me down, I heard the hive roar. It was done. I have never heard more cheering.

But the game wasn't over. They'd snuck up refinery again. A couple gorges in their hideouts sat back and gloated, laughing at the fact that after all this work, nobody won, because of this moronic time limit. I wasn't about to let that happen.

Thirty seconds remaining.

I came back to marine start, and me and a few others got jetpacks. Our phase outside refinery was still there, hanging by a thread from an earlier fade sneak attack that had already lost us the phase at feedwater. I was the first to arrive at refinery, and I dumped every last bit of my ammo into it. I didn't think we had time, but the others finally arrived. I was in the air knifing the hive with all I had while a few other LMGs fired on the hive, and threw their hand grenades. It finally went down, and we cheered again. With our last ten seconds, we watched the only remaining alien fall to the ping of death.

Being on the right side of a marine comeback is glorious.

Excellent post - as a man who is being starved of NS, hearing dramatic stories like that lifts teh spirits. Hell, just the fact that the post wasnt filled with the incessant whining drone of "unbalanced, flayra doesnt care, I'm less than 13yrs old I know how to make a game...." etc etc etc automatically puts it above 90% of the postings around here.

Brings back the memories of some other amazing bast comebacks, which on their own made up for the "gas chamber of death" standard marine game start of bast yore.

I've probably played more "epic" games on bast than any other map.

Though, seems like every comeback nowadays is made by the marines .

Quick question though, since it appears this was played on voogru. Was chrisgia on your team?

But i must say that the 1.04 Bast was better. I dont like the new ResNode Layout.

I was in a game that was the fairest **** ever ;< no details im sorry, but at the end the heavy train went into the hive and started blasting everywhere, at the same time 2 skulks were finishing off the mainbase, and it were 2 fades at hive, when everything was over, there was 1 skulk at hive healing with a dc and 1 heavy armor with 16hp and 0armor, he had 0 shots left, just a welder and knife. He stood outside for like 2 minutes but the skulk kept healing. Finally he decided to go in and started knifing the dc. The skulk ran up and he started jumping around, 3 slashes on the skulk and the game was over ;>

    Rage: don't believe so.

Anyway, I'd just like to say that most of the time, it's not half as fun to be on the other side of a comeback.

This from the perspective of three straight losses on ayumi, two aliens, one marine, which should've been ours and then some. The second alien loss was particularly embarassing. We started in pressure control, and repelled the marines pretty much throughout the map. I personally, (keep in mind I'm a crap skulk, so this is because there was NO resistance) with the help of one (1) other skulk, took out everything they were building in a huge swath from Cold Turn to AE35, including a phase gate, while the marines conducted the worst siege ever on Pressure Control. It was too far away to actually hit what they needed, and the only reason it wasn't completely torn out already was that most of our people were either incompetent or scared. After taking out AE35, I went for their base. I single-handedly took out their base phase gate and observatory with no reaction whatsoever, and was about to start on the IP when some idiot at PC killed one of their guys, who then killed me. After seeing that these guys didn't have a clue what they were doing, I told everyone to rush with me, but they were convinced we were boxed in from both sides, and wouldn't hear it any other way, even after I put up Hamasaki hive with no resistance at all. Twenty minutes later, these incompetent dolts lost us both hives after throwing a bunch of fades and onos at things that never would've worked, and not bothering to listen to me when I was trying to organize a movement rush. We could've won the first ten minutes, and we lost in thirty.

Despite all this, I still feel all three of them were good games. Even though I got stuck on the dumb side twice, all battles were hard fought with decent plans, and the first alien loss wasn't dumb at all. Our team was well-organized, with a pack of fades to save everything just when it seemed like we were toast. The marines were just better.

Is it just me, or does this sound like a horrible game. Bad commander takes marines and relocates to double, where they make NO headway and aliens grab every other res node on the map. Marines hole up there untill they can suit the entire team up in heavies and then go on to win the game. Sounds miserable. Aliens should of won, yet they didn't. Maybe I am alone on this.

I'm willing to put money on the aliens not group attacking and not using any lerks to umbra their onos and fades....

how many attempts did skulks make to get into the top bit and gorge to bile down? etc etc... that room is damned hard to defend properly - if aliens couldn't take it with 2 hives then they were lacking good team work in my opinion

not to say the marines weren't a good team... as people said, some of the best games are played on Bast - i also think Hera adds to those.

the only little thing i don't like about bast is the big spinning door - i have no problem with a spinning door, just that you don't move smoothly on it, so it's mighty hard to aim!

other than that, good post - good read, and wp getting the comeback ^_^

I just had a game about a day ago, map was bast and it was one of the strangest ever.

Our commander claimed that this strategy was not to be undertaken by people who don't listen to orders. We all agreed and the commander dropped a new CC at Atmos. (double). Then told 4 of the 8 people on our team to run to atmos and build all that he drops.

Then, at MS, he droped 2 IP's.

We all started telling him that this wasnt the way to go, and "game over man, game over."

He simply built the EXACT same thing over at atmos. So, we had in total, 2 CC's.
2IP's at MS, 2 IP's at Atmos. An armory at both, and an arms lab at MS. The proto lab at atmos. No turrets at all.

Meanwhile while he was building Squads 4-5 were out getting res nodes and mining them.

I have NEVER seen the ailens so confused, first they thought that we were relocating, then they found out that we had 2 bases.

The game lasted a whole 10 minutes.

Oh, there was a great deal of teamwork on both sides. I did notice fewer lerks than normal, but they were there. The thing is, we were laying down buckets of constant suppressive fire. It was hard for them to get into the place at all, except for fades. And the few times we ever saw more than one fade at the same time, they just ended up tripping over each others' feet and we'd tag one, so that actually worked to their detriment.

Not by themselves. Unless you're dealing with stupid or unlucky fades, HMGs just mean that the fade will blink away faster. You've got to have something that does alot of damage all at once to finish him off, or he'll get away. I find the best way is two-three HMGs to one shotgun for dealing with two-hive fades and up.

Swift Idiot: bile much? Voogru and G4B2S servers are the only place I go these days, because any other place I'm a regular at seems to go bad eventually.

Nah, the truth is HMG's hit them far and close away therefore fades have a much harder time killing fades. Whereas a shotty can only deal full damage up close.

That's true enough, but it relies on there being a far away to hit them from. In a room like atmos or feedwater on bast, it's too cramped for that sort of thing, and the fade has too much stuff to hide behind.
