Ns Staff Has Gone Crazy

<div class="IPBDescription">Obviously</div> A long time ago when NS came out, it was 99mb and it
didn't have any problems, and I was able to download it
on my 56k and play it.

Now it is 155mb, which is not a problem, but you people expect
me to download a 202 thing called 'Steam' that I have never
heard of and I see no point in downloading it, after reading it's description.
Yet now I can't install NS because steam is required.
This is either a moronic idea or an attempt to get free advertising for Steam.

So lets see, 155 + 202 + 35 + 4
And if I downloaded steam it would probably make me download
half-life, even though I own a copy.

That equals 396+ mb... = <span style='color:red'><b>Fail.</b></span>

Thanks for getting my hopes up after it took so long to download
this useless install exe. <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Steam is Valve's replacement for the WON system. It is available totally free of charge. If you don't get it, you will be unable to play NS when Valve finally closes out WON. Plus, it's got many more features than WON ever did, and is getting better every day. There is no advertising in it, save for one (1!) time when CS:CZ came out. You often do not have to DL HalfLife - I never have.

    The reason there are so many parts to DL is because of all the patches being released. When NS finally becomes officially Steam-approved, there will be one DL/install, so you can wait untill then if you wish. That may take several months though.

    Also, any form of Steam bashing is frowned upon on this forum, and will usually be locked on-sight by the admins.

    I could play the newest version of NS without Steam....hows that possible, if you guys here keep telling, that I need Steam in order to play NS???

    I guess my biggest problem is that I am trying to run NS on
    a computer without internet, so yes.... Steam would be
    utterly useless. Heck, I never used Won. Why are you guys
    so big on using these networks? Whats wrong with the built-in
    game finding system that came with half-life?

    So I guess im waiting for an offline-installable version of NS.
    And also an NS Bot that I can use offline. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    So far I got Counter-Strike and TFC working on my bedroom
    computer with no internet, just Podbot and foxbot. What I think
    is hilarious, though, is that they are trying to charge for Condition Zero
    when all it is is what I have done myself, the same game with bots in it.
    And I can play it offline. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It didn't it the earliest of stages, but that was fixed a while ago. For bots, try <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66792' target='_blank'>Whichbot.</a>

You will have a harder and harder time finding a non-Steam game. Also, you won't be able to download a patch for another version of NS - Steam handles all patching and updates automatically.

    let me clarify that as soon as WON goes down. you'll NEED Steam. To play any HL game. at all. CS, DOD, HL. the whole lot.

    in your case you could still probably play them with WON offline. But if you're going to play them online. you'll need it.

    /me points at Mech

    listen to the man. (well mostly)

    HL has Gone the STEAM route.

    Yes you can play NS On a won install (though you need Steam to beable to do this anyway)

    All of HL is going the route of STEAM, if yah don't like it.
    Leave.

    Nothing you say is gona convince Flayra to make a release for won (as it will be shutting down, and thus developing for it is silly).

    And as for using 4a on WON?
    well you technicaly can, however you will hit potholes every so often as the HL code changed alot between WON and STEAM.

    meh.

    ...How arrogant, i can play many online games fine and im on 56k.

    As for oinkness, get yourself a good download manager like getright, set the downloads up and leave them running overnight. Shouldnt take more then a few days to get all the bits you need.

    Hush. Get the Steam installer, and it will find your old HL install, plaster it into some .gcfs and save you the downloading. Then install NS and you're done - its just an additional 200kb, not megabyte, to install.

    Edit : And Steam has its infamous offline mode, too.
