ummmm
What exactly is it? All I know is that it's some sort of P2P program....maybe not even that. I'm downloading it right now, but I dont even know what its like. I've seen torrent files on sites before and thats all. Where do most of you download files?

Bittorrent is not so much a p2p client as it is a new download protocol. It works by swarming the downloads. If you look at the diagram on the site, that should give you a pretty good idea. Basically, anybody who has the whole file, and is keeping their BT connection open, is seeding that file for the people who don't yet have the whole thing, referred to as leeches. Leeches start off getting the file from the seed(s), and as more leeches connect, they get pieces of the file they don't have from both seeds and other leeches. What this means is that the more people are downloading a file, the faster everybody gets it, as opposed to the current system where a greater number of clients does nothing but put stress on the server.

Due to the forums anti-piracy polocies, most of the torrent sites that people use will probably be best not to post...

Bittorrent is a P2P file distribution system designed to ease up the process of distributing files across the net. By using Bittorrent, companite save $$$ on bandwidth.

But yea, sorry, even tho there are lots of legit files on torrens sites, a lot of them are not legal, you'll have to find them on your own... It shouldn't be hard,.. Ask around in IRC.

It's a 'swarming download system'. Instead of the old way of distributing files, with a single server sending complete data to every single client downloading the file, the clients will share data among themselves.

With Bittorrent, you have a server called a 'tracker' which keeps track of all the clients' IP addresses, and which sections of the file they have. Clients with complete copies of the file are called 'seeds' and all they do is upload data; clients with partial copies will still upload data, effectively swapping sections with other clients in a ****-for-tat manner.

It's great for distributing big files because the bandwidth usage for the distributor is way lower than it would be when using a traditional HTTP or FTP download. One of my favourite Bittorrent download sites is Filerush - gigabytes upon gigabytes of content.

It's appallingly rubbish at distributing files which shouldn't be distributed - if you're downloading an illegal copy of Photoshop, for instance, Adobe's lawyers can easily connect to the tracker and collect a list of every single IP address downloading said file.

Used for good, it's excellent - and used for bad, expect a court summons in the near future. ;-)

One really cool thing about bittorent is that when you DL someones torrent file rather than pick up the file from thier client, you're helping them out a hole lot by not sucking up any of thier bandwidth. Thus many sites offer torrents for thier software as a alternitive to downloads.

I pretty much only use bittorrents as a relacement from downloading normally anyways. I can give you this link to OC remix, but unless you have been itching to download 1000 video game remix MP3's it probably won't entice you all to much.

    Yup.

Lots of Linux distros are doing the Bittorent thing, and also download sites like 3DGamers is/was doing torrents.

Torrent is quickly becoming a legitimate means of distributing crap. Too bad it still sucks and is way slower than an HTTP download meanwhile it rapes your bandwidth speed... :/

    [edit]
Also, Valve picked up the guy who wrote Bittorrent, and so now bittorrent technology is going into steam so that way you have to upload all of valve's patches for them. Yeah, I'm not too excited about that either.

I find it just as fast and generally more reliable too, but then I would never pay for a fileplanet membership or something of that type.

I find it annoying that most of the BT sites are closing. I only know of ONE good site now... hopefully, it'll stay on.
