Connection Problems

Its not just me.
I have experienced problems connecting to NS servers (and some CS servers too). I put my server up and ppl have trouble connecting to it...

i'm wondering....is it a router level problem? i mean, then connect, says connection accepted. then nada. never starts loading the game.

This happens to me on many many servers, and i've talked to my friends (in diff states, etc) and they all have the same problems connecting to certian servers (including mine).

Has anyone else noticed this problem? And does anyone have a fix? And can anyone make me look really stupid by telling me its somethings really really simple. Thanks.

I think your server crashes at that point because of adminmod

no, because connecting to it on the LAN works fine. (i watch clients connect and drop too)

Also, on those internet games, I cannot connect, but i run the eye on them and they have the same ppl playing for more. I'm not sure why. But i know its not just my server either.

oh yeah, and it happened 2-3 times before i connected to your server too. But then it worked. And its not just my HL, its other ppl too that i've talked with.

I thought it might have something to do with my external IP and such (since my IP is masq'd)

    so i added +ip 24.242.209.60

    and i get this

    Added packfile /usr/local/games/hlds_l/valve/pak0.pak (985 files)
    Protocol version 46
    Exe version 3.1.1.0
    Exe build: 14:46:34 Jun 11 2002 (2056)
    WON Auth Server
WARNING: UDP_OpenSocket: port: 27015 bind: Cannot assign requested address
FATAL ERROR (shutting down): Couldn't allocate dedicated server IP port
Add "-debug" to the ./hlds_run command line to generate a debug.log to help with solving this problem
Tue Nov 5 14:36:07 CST 2002: Server Died

hehe, i didn't so something right! but it shows ppl connecting occasionally but i don't any of them get in. So i dunno.....i really don't wana make my server act as a router just to run a server. (btw, its a linux server)

ok, new addition: i got it to work with -ip "subarticsolutions.com" but still ppl are having problems connecting to it. this is rather annoying :-\

this could be the problem with the linux version of hlds and automatic VAC updates. There was an update last night and if you're not running the latest beta server then the next map after a VAC update will not allow anyone to enter the game. It just lets the connect and then nada.

Eric Smith, the dude responsible for VAC updates told me to go here to download the latest beta server:

    http://dev.valve-erc.com/?go=server_beta

Here's what the change log says:

    * Fixed problem where the Linux server would not update new security modules correctly, forcing a restart of the server in order for clients to be able to connect again.

thanks, i'll try that and let you know.

    hlds [19feffd0de1109152650ac748038c0dc] (from readme_3110b.txt)

i got it installed appariently, but still having the same problems. I decided to set it as a DMZ host (although i really don't want todo because its just a big security risk to begin with). still no go on the connections. I have successfully run DoD servers before, but on a different machine now that i think about it... hmmmm.......this has my courious now. its starting to sound more like my server configuration instead of my router. because with linux its really easy to close off ports. but that doesn't make any sense considering it works perfect on the lan. Man this is confusing.

I am an idiot i blocked outgoing port 36794 because of a virus that uses that port to send CC nfo and passwords out that port. I couldn't find the article by symantic to post it here but any good admin already read it.

oh well....thanks for all the help LOL

ahh, good ol' firewalls, they block exactly what we tell 'em to...

well, it worked with ricochet anyway. turns out i'm still having problems with NS. Not sure what yet. but i think -ip "x.x.x.x" has to be the first argument.

yup, can't use FQDNs on that IP arg. u has to be first and in the format of a.b.c.d yay me.

not totally sure, but i think my MTU size on my router, the -ip switch on hlds, and being a DMZ host had alot ot do with my problems before. I will slowly figure out what it was exactly and report back.

Edited : had to censor the IPs and WonIDs
