Scariest Area In A Game?
What is the scariest (or at least vaguely disturbing) location you've been to in a game? Include a short description of it.
Mine would probably be The Cradle, an abbandoned (yeah, right) building that was an orphanage and insane asylum (simultaneously) from Thief: Dark Shadows.

OH man... I wish I had a demo of it, I was the last survivor, and there were at least 7 zombies all following me, and I'm just unloading various weapons at them, and not making a dent.

HLTV was prolly running, so there IS a demo of it (somewhere)
First time a zombie-whatever-the-crap-it-was jumped at me, I quit right there. Hey, I was like 12.
ENCILADAS!
Crawling through a vent, slowly, marveling at the detail of the map, then looking behind me and swearing I saw a skulk. Made me jump- but alas, the red lights were playing tricks on me. On the same map- ANY FRICKIN HIVE PERIOD. Its so hard to see things that when a skulk runs through the hive, it blends in perfectly. Truly a great map. But DAMN its scary!
Other than that: Probably "Fatal Frame"- the whole game.
i was like 10... and in the forest dungeon theres part with the hands that come down and grab you... oooh man was that scary, and then there was the ghost dungeon or whatever it was... eep
The nightmare hospital in SH2 was just as frightening.
// Must remeber to ask Twilight to get me in on the ZP beta testing... and submit my map, to... uh... play my map with others. Yeah, yeah that'll work...
Probably scarriest area in a game is a night-time terror mission when fighting snakemen in X-COM: UFO Defence.
A little bit of background, "terror" missions is what happens once or more per month where aliens attempt to attack a city and terrorize the inhabitants. However, these battles are special; enemies bring along related friends... Snakemen are the worst to fight terror missions against, because their "friends" are aliens called Crysallids.
These Crysallids just LOVE to run quickly, absorb tons of damage, and turn soldiers and civilians alike into walking zombies. A couple turns later, that zombie becomes another Crysallid.
Whats worse is that the computer "cheats" in night time missions by remembering your position, and moving back into the shadows and firing from there; but you have no such luxury - your vision is and always will be impared at night.
My last soldier was in the dropship, armed to the teeth.
One Crysallid came up the ramp. Dead by reaction fire.
Another Crysallid came up the ramp the next turn, killed by my own attack order.
And then...
Then...
//twitch
8 Crysallids marched up the ramp 1 one at a time, allways killed by reaction fire.
Each one getting... Closer, and... Closer...
Can't escape. Can't...
//stokes out
Saying that, I began to like the game and I've completed it like 5 times now
another scary game was silent hill 3 i got about half way just got too freaked out to finish it
Its far from a shoot em up, you will be peeing your pance on hard difficulty... ammo is scarce and stealth may be your only option.
Play it on hard... easy will spoil the game for you.
I sent them an E-mail but the never responded
I never get picked to beta test anything. Even if I helped make it (but that's a whole other story).
All in all, it took me about an hour to get to the first alien simply because i had to crawl-walk (shift and ctrl held) around every corner, then jump around like a moron for a while.
Oh yeah, and that bit (right at the start) where you flick the switch, the lights blow out, and you hear an alien running through the vent about 2 feet away from you.... i almost did a backflip over my chair.
...just the lights playing tricks on me, I suppose.
I guess the next 'scary' place, would have to be AvP, as a marine for the first time. When you've finally gotten to the place where there will be aliens...you go up the ladder, and then the hissing of a broken pipe blends in with the same sound a hissing alien makes. First time I played it I was really cautious moving forward...with some cool adrenaline. Something that only really happens when if I'm the last survivor in a CS or NS match, or I'm running back with the flag in UT or something.
Cargo holds - It's dark, the heavy maintenance droids are on the prowl, and protocol droids like to break out of their storage containers when you get close.
One area of recreation deck - Some tight corridors here. Most of the lights are out or malfunctioning. Place is pretty banged up. They catch you by surprise.
No One Lives Forever 2
Abandoned arctic base - Almost no music, complete silence. The power is out. The place was left in a haste, papers are scattered on the ground, food still left on the tables. What happened?
Ohio home - Abandoned house that you're sent to examine. A storm is brewing outside, strong winds causing the shutters to hit the windows. The house is very dark and empty. Thankfully, the power is on if you can find the light switches.
Undying
The whole freaking mansion - I'm only into this game a few hours, since I only let myself play it in the middle of the night with all the lights are off and I am alone. Already, the game has freaked me out quite a bit. The worst of those however are when I had first started the game. I can't really explain what happens without spoiling it for everyone else though.
American McGee's Alice
While nowhere was especially scary, many areas were quite twisted and disturbing. Skool and the Asylum were especially freaky among the others with the insane children.
Trespasser
The Town - This game received a lot of flak for sucking, but if you got past it's problems, it was a good game. Though one thing that made the game so scary was one of it's problems - it's controls. Because your arm and gun were part of the world, if you banged up against an object, you could drop your weapon. This town was very old, buildings had fought nature and lost, and none of the builds felt especially safe. With all of the buildings and corners, there were plenty of areas for raptors to sneak up on you and make you lunch. And you see, when they sneak up on you, you don't know they're there until they're only a few feet away. When they're that close, when you turn around, you'll hit your weapon against them and can't an aim on them, or worse, drop your weapon. This adds together to really make you fear close combat with anything.
Abuse!!! Turn down the lights and up the sound... scariest game ever! Such good pacing.
Shadowman towards the end in that bloody toyland crazy place. That was creapy.
Turok 2... any of those dark places with the wierd zombies were scary as hell.
Jurassic Park on my Amiga had an amusingly scary bit in it. The game was split into two styles - one was a standard top-down shooter/explorer (think Zelda), and it switched to a first-person mode when you went into a bunker (the first Amiga game to do Doom-style 3d iirc). There had been lots of warnings about raptors hanging out in bunkers in the run up to going inside, and so you'd approach every corner with a huge feeling of dread, only ... there were no dang enemies in the building!
Another Amiga oldie, Corporation, had very freaky little spider-like droids that just loved to hang out on the ceiling out of sight, then drop down onto your face, face-hugger style. God, the number of times I jumped at those wee buggers.
System Shock 2 has already been mentioned, and for some of the reasons I'd pick too.
Ask again in a few months and I'm sure I'll be able to add Doom3 and HL2 to the list ^^
Exact same experience. Playing it for the first time at midnight, that made fall out of my seat and almost wake everyone with a rambling of curse words. Man, that game knew how to scare.
Being in that room as last survivor with a load of zombies after you is an experience you won't likely forget quickly.
as a youngun i used to get REALLY into games.... like sucked into the atmosphere completely. i think it was part of a brain thing i had.
well in super metroid and then the "scary" (read: forest) dungeons in OoT, i would get scared because i felt so ALONE...
samus or link was all alone, all bi his/herself... so alone...
that got me real scared at times. seems weird now, though.
Oh man, me and my friend jumped, damn that part.
Alien vs. Predator 2
The whole begining of the Marine's Campaign. You're cut off from your team, you hear creepy sounds, you find Predator's Victims hanging dripping with blood. You're in a dark, abandoned outpost that's in ruins. Very awesome game.
