Dang Lycos

aka, time to help me w/ another virus
ok, so I had some kind of javascript virus recently, the ones that infiltrate your computer straight through IE without you even needing to agree to download anything (thanks, Microsoft -- I really should take the hint and start using Firefox, but I'm just so USED to IE)...

I ran my whole host of fixer-upper programs (McAfee, AVG, Spybot, AdAware) and cleaned everything I saw, which wasn't much because I'm pretty good about staying clean usually... then I ran em again and everything is clean, but there's one annoying vestige -- whenever I do a google search or some similar searches, a Lycos pop-up box appears with search results I didn't ask for... now, since it's not picked up by any of my virus or spyware detectors, I figure it must be some part of IE itself the virus tampered with... does this sound like anything anyone's familiar with? any suggestions (short of reformatting or reinstalling windows, which would be obvious overkills for something this minor)? thanks in advance

A pop-up box sounds like adware...
Just dump IE. Your computer will thank you for it

Seriously though, if you've updated Ad-Aware and your virus scanner definitions, I don't know what it could be.

you should use spybot search and destory and adaware together, they both get things the others don't

Yea, drop IE, or if you like big steaps, drop Windows

you know the number 1 thing keeping me with IE? I like the fact that the spacebar scrolls down a page... it's ideal for things like these forums, I don't want to have to reach my left hand all the way over to the page down key just to scroll a page down...

I've just checked in Firefox 0.9 (albeit the Mac OS X version), and the space-bar thing works fine.

Go on, give in to the dark side. Especially with the various fun IE flaws around at the moment...

I use Norton Anti Virus 2004 Proffesional.

Firefox isn't that different from IE - it even has better features... Tabbed browsing is excellent .

Try Avant browser if you want a more "complete" feeling instead of FireFox.
    Avants full screen ownzorz.

Unfortunately, that there is the problem. It uses the IE engine, which means its just as buggy and craptacular as ever. I just tested the spacebar thing on Firefox 0.9 WinXP, and it works. One tap scrolls one screen.

I must have something set weird because the space bar still doesn't page down... I think it has something to do with this feature where you can start typing something and it'll find what you're typing in the page without having to do a "find"... so when I hit space, I think it's looking for spaces in the page... and I can't figure out how to disable it...

    *goes off to tweak summore*

oh duh... I had 'move system caret with focus/selection changes' checked in advanced settings... I must have looked through the options 10 times before finally figuring it out... ok, thanks for the IE intervention guys, you can officially ignore this thread now =P
