Highest settings for the game and a resolution of 1280x1024 in 32bit while playing.
I get better FPS counts in games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Unreal Tournament 2003.
The polygon count seems to be pretty much the same as most DOD maps, and yet I average 50 FPS less then in that mod. Sure character models have a higher polygon count, but the maps are all closed in so vis-blocking should be perfect. Only thing I can think of is that this game needs more ram then DOD but I've got plenty.
Seriously, what's wrong with this mod. Don't get me wrong, it's great and all,but playing with an average of 20-30 FPS (10-20 in action situations) when I should be getting 50-70+ is just plain "unfun".
Anyway, thank for this great mod, and if anyone has any tips on how to improve our FPS...
Find yourself a HL fps tweaking guide (or a CS one, as they're more common). With older graphics cards I've found limiting the maximum texture size can help. Try adding the line
gl_max_size "256"
to the config.cfg in your NS directory. It'll make the textures somewhat blurrier, but ought to reduce the load on your graphics card. (I use 128 for that setting, which looks a little on the terrible side, but at least makes the game somewhat playable.)
Other things you could try in the config.cfg:
gl_picmip "x" (0 is default, setting it to 1 or 2 will reduce the texture quality. It looks bad but can help the framerate)
gl_playermip "x" (as picmip)
gl_keeptjunctions "1" (might make little gaps appear between textures, but helps slightly)
r_shadows "0"
r_decals "100" (0-500, controls the number of decals (bulletholes, etc) drawn)
The "wickedgl" drivers can help too if you're running in openGL. I don't know the URL, but if you search the net you should find the site easily enough.
There are more things you can change, but those are all I can think of from the top of my head. I have a 400MHz Celeron and a Voodoo3, and get a just about playable framerate. It still dips to 5fps when things get hectic though.
One important thing to remember is that HL likes to reset some of these settings, so if you use them WRITE PROTECT YOUR CONFIG.CFG.

-don't use the r_drawviewmodels command though, as it doesn't work too well in NS.
