I've still got all my armies boxed up. Imperial guard, choas/demon army, battle sisters/arbitrators.
I would love to play again but those evil gamesworkshop people make the hobby so expensive plus to try and be as diplomatic as possible..... most people who go into GM shops are a bit excitable and youthful ;p
So this beta is an RTS? wasn't there an mmog planned?
The MMOG was going to be based in the Warhammer universe, not the WH40K universe, it looked like a World of Warcraft clone which may be why they decided to stop making it...
And yes, the guard apparently play a small part in the single player missions, but it specifically says on the site they will not be a playable race, although I have no doubt they will be in whatever expansion comes out first, and you KNOW there will have to be expansions until every army is covered...
Since my little ramble proved popular (with quanaut anyway) i'll write a little about the guard.
The Imperial Guard are the standard human grunts; nothing like their space marine counterparts, they are individually extremely weak; the only unit in the board game weaker than a standard guardsman is a gretchen, which is basically a space goblin.
They are armed with laser rifles which are more commonly called lasguns. You might think a laser rifle would be a nasty weapon but you'd be wrong. In game terms they are about as effective as a modern rifle, only more efficient and reliable in terms of ammunition. An individual guardsman is very squishy indeed.
The main strength of the Imperial Guard is superior numbers, that and tanks. They have without doubt the best tanks in the game, even Tau Hammerhead gunships (not in the game) are only equal at best to the mighty Leman Russ MKIV Main battle tank.
The Imperial Guard army consists of platoons of Lasgun armed infantry, perhaps some heavy weapons troopers, stormtroopers (elite guardsmen with armour that doesn't suck, still not as good as a space marine though), and the lovely lovely tanks. They can also incorporate several interesting units including sanctioned psykers (psychics with a variety of powers), Ratling Snipers (humans who evolved over thousands of years to be shorter and lighter than "normal" humans due the conditions of their world, excellent shots though) and Ogryns (humans who evolved to be hulking brutes more powerful in close combat than orks, but possibly even more stupid).
I played a guard player yesterday actually, and lost (just) with my Tau army. His masses of heavy weapon troopers were damn scary, although I expected more tanks...

Nids are too complicated for the world's smacktard population, I imagine.
In all seriousness, the GW dev team understand the Nid rules so little that I'm not surprised noone uses them in games..... and the fact the new models look like zerg........ and that fact that "hive mind aliens who want to eat us all!!!" has been done to death a billion times.
However..... every other company gets away with using that stereotype villain, so why not with GW stuff hmm?

Put it in a squad of people and get into rapid fire range (Even easier with the new rules that are just over the horizon) and it'll hurt a lot of the basic units.
But then again I have a friend that likes using almost pure infantry. So we can see how well they really do.

The reason people say IG have bad weapons is because people are fond of using marines, since even the terminally brain damaged can use marines thanks to their all singing all dancing power armour.
Which is why I take great delight in mortar/earthshaker/basilisk blast markers of doom, blowing the marines away while they're shaking hands with their powered groins in the Rhino.
Hellguns for all! I like the Cadians. I was hoping the IP were included so I could be Cadians. :\ But oh well. I already signed up for beta before the subscriber one even STARTED. But I'm not a subscriber, so I'll have to wait for the open beta or a lot later. Curses.
On a similar note, someone should make the Daemonhunters for Dawn of War! My god Daemonhunter terminators rock. See?
I know there's a NDA and all, but can you say what the general pace of the game is like? Even though it looks beautiful, I don't need another fast-paced RTS. I want tactics, instead of just chucking troops in a direction: more of a Total War game than a standard RTS.
I stopped playing once 3rd edition came out, but I always enjoyed the Eldar. With their variety of troops and weaponry, they were very nasty against most other races; my friend disallowed me from using warp spiders after a while. Good times.
