So the Aug 3rd date is bogus.
I know I've already made one post on the subject, but since the rumor is still going strong (mostly in part to Gamestop's BS of saying they have official word its gone gold) and there is now some "evidence" for people who want to believe the rumors are true, so I decided to post this again:
DOOM 3 has not gone gold. id always announces when a game goes gold right when they declare it gold. They have never, ever kept it a secret for marketting or any other purpose. *ANY* date you hear from a game store, a magazine, a message board, or your aunt Bertha, is pure, 100% grade A bull****.
Now, to confront the new bits of "evidence" people are using to propogate the rumor as fact:
1) The official Quakecon tournament is a DOOM 3 tournament this year, not Quake 3 like every year since 1999.
This one, at first glance, could be a sign of DOOM 3 being done to some people, but unfortunately that's just not the case. After all, in 1999 the official tournament game was Quake 3, but it didn't go gold until around Christmas. Also, I got to play DOOM 3 dm last year at last Quakecon, so letting people play it in the tourney isn't exactly shocking or earth shattering. Sorry.
2) Some people got their hands on this marketting flyer, which proclaims at the very top of the page "We said it would be out when its done... its done!". But rather than make myself the sole nay-sayer I'll just quote what Gamespot's Rumor Control had to say about the issue:

QUOTE

The official story:
Activision would neither confirm nor deny the scan's authenticity, but did say authoritatively that "id Software has made no announcement that Doom 3 has gone gold." Twice.
What we heard:
When the scan surfaced at the end of the week, gamers who've waited years for the shooter pounced on it like a pack of information-starved hyenas. It appears to be of a promotional one-sheet like the kind sent to retailers before a game's release, outlining a massive six-month publicity campaign via every means of communication this side of semaphore flags. But the header is what got most gamers' attention. Playing on developer id Software's infamously vague release date, it proudly proclaims, "We said it would be out when it's done...it's done!" Despite the seeming irrefutability of that statement, a closer look at the one-sheet shows it's missing one crucial bit of information--the ship date. Nowhere on the sheet does a specific day, month, quarter, or year appear--other than the May 2003 quote from Wired. (Yes, we've been waiting that long.) Since these materials are often printed months in advance, it's likely Activision has them stockpiled, ready to be shipped out the minute the wizards of id finally hand over that precious gold master. However, the GameStop.com listing is a bit harder to dismiss, since it is linked to from its home page and trumpets "Official launch date of August 3rd, 2004 confirmed!" When presented with this bit of information, an Activision rep first said "I had not seen that," before repeating the aforementioned denial, albeit with a slightly less convincing tone.

So there you have it. Until id says otherwise, DOOM 3 isn't gold and it isn't coming out August 3rd.
Don't get me wrong. I want DOOM 3 to come out as much as the next guy. If John Carmack or Todd Hollenshead come out tommorrow and say its gone gold, I'll be dancing in the streets. I'm just pointing out that until id themselves say so, everything else is just a bs rumor.
And to the "OMG DOOM 3 sux00rs!! _________ r0x0rs!!!" and "ololo plastic technology only game will sux ololo" crowd, please just do not reply to the thread. This isn't a thread to debate the merits of the game, its a thread to inform people who are anxiously awaiting the game about the rumors of its release date. So shut your pie holes.

Controversy.
EDIT: And even more so.
That is shocking, yet somehow expected. What a depressing state of affairs.
