Forget About Glow

<div class="IPBDescription">Detail texutres is where it's at</div> HI 1.3 was just released, with detailtexures and glow.

Glow sucks. It does improve teh graphics, but it drops framerate ALOT. I have a radeon x800pro, and I'm getting in the 30s fps wise.

Detailtextures, on the otherhand, are amazing. They make the game look sooo much better. I havn't seen enough talk about detailtexures here. They should be implemented.

Actually, someone has released a det-tex pack for some NS maps; and it pwns j00! Give me five minutes and I'll have a comparison photo for you.

[EDIT] OK dirtbags, time to play spot-the-difference. This is the metal floors on the upper level of NS_nothing's readyroom, taken by crouching down with the flashlight on. Enjoy:

I'm getting 15FPS, will this make it go any lower?
  • DragonMechDragonMech Join Date: 2003-09-19 Member: 21023Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
I notice virtually no difference in my FPS. It can't be more than a ~5 FPS loss at the most.

    <a href='http://hem.bredband.net/congal/temp/DetTex_pack.zip' target='_blank'>DetTex Pack download</a> - thanks Soylent Green

    <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=62384&st=0' target='_blank'>Massive thread on the subject.</a>

Once you have installed the DetTex pack, just open your console and type "r_detailtextures 1" If your video card supports them, all detail textures will be activated.

    thanks, I'll try that.

    EDIT: the readme file says I need a GeForce 3 card... I have a GeForce 2 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    It doesn't use pixel shaders does it <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    BTW here's the result:

    ] r_detailtextures 1
    Unknown command: r_detailtextures

    great...

Kinda hard to see the really awesome textures when you have this HUGE UGLY GUN stuck in your camera.

Just fyi, detail textures were actually originally discovered/figured out on the NS forums, since then, a number of mods have started using them in one way or another. (It was probably originally added for CS:CZ or something like that).

There are two sort of forms of detail textures...

The first method is to create detail textures that add bumps to the original textures, sort of highlights, make things look a bit more 3D, and better when close-up... That is the method the detail texture pack created for NS uses.

The second method uses a program written by someone on these forums, that simulates the use of 512x512 24-bit textures, which causes textures to look a whole helluva lot sharper and kewler.

The 512x512 24-bit texture thing is not possible in NS, as the ns and ns2.wad textures (and most other .wads), were created at the same resolution they are used in (256x256 max if I recall correctly)... They weren't created at a high resolution and then scaled down to the size that would be used in-game.

Without the high resolution 512x512 image, it's impossible to create a detail texture that simulates 512x512 24-bit textures.

Thus... we are out of luck.

Actually, I believe it was the Hostile Intent people that first discovered detailed textures in general.

On the other hand, it's right here in the NS forums that the second method, simulating higher res textures, was invented.

Basically, I came up with the idea, a bunch of forum members came up with the formula to do it, and then I wrote the program. Overall a group efford by the NS mapping community <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've been meaning to email PlanetHalfLife with a link to the NS forum topic on it, but I'm a bit embarrased by the current version of the program. There's a much better version of the programming in-progress on my hard drive, but I haven't worked on it in ages due to the apparent lack of interest in the technique.

Though, last I heard, Nightwatch was interested in using it... But that was a while ago.

I wouldn't mind have both in there, depending on my mood I could choose weather I want one or the other (or if I want both!), I personally hold atmospehere over fps (but my computer handles hl and NS very well so I'm biased)

and teh glow mod won't eat up many fps if you keep the settings long (1-5 loosk to be more than enough) alot of the pictures posted with using step 8 + if I am not mistaken.

can't we just get along and frag together?

The glow mod at 1 blur step doesn't kill FPS all too much, provided you have a decent video card. I'm going to try out the detailed textures.

If you ask me, the glow mod will serve NS more justice, simply because three-quarters of the atmosphere in NS is built through the BEAUTIFUL lighting that the mappers created in their maps. However, I have yet to try the detailed textures, so my opinion goes well with a grain of salt.

Maybe the detailed textures and the glow mod, making Frames Per Second into Frames Per Minute, but creating a perfect screenshot environment for showing off. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I was running 1024x768, with glow and high detail textures with no slowdown whatsoever (radeon 9600 64ddr). The glow looks nice as hell, by the way.

Hmm, I was experimenting with the DOD detailtextures, and those downloadable NS ones... I assume they're the first type. It just looks like the regular textures only grainy. It's nothing close to the cool effect you see in those HI screenshots. Does that look like the second technique they used in HI?

If you look at the actual textures, the NS and DOD ones are just patterns, while the HI ones are detailed replicas of the originals.

And the glow hardly drops my framerate at all. R9500 Pro, 1024x768x32, 12x TFSAA 16x AF, 100fps vsync-on. Occasionally will drop to 95fps with glow enabled, in heavy areas. ^_^
