Jesus, he's right:

QUOTE

Microsoft is working on a new shopping Web site for software, hardware, and peripherals that it plans to advertise in the Windows XP Start Menu and the Internet Explorer Web browser.

They better damn well have a way to turn it off.

I doubt Microsoft would shove advertisements in your place... Just go to Start -> Programs and look up the top. Blammo, Windows Catalog.

They're probably just gonna replace that link with Marketplace.

I'd love all the lovely little lawsuits that would spring up if Microsoft started shoving advertisements down your throat.

Wasn't this a HUGE controversy with the release of Win98 (or was it 95)? I'm pretty sure they were gonna have a group in the start-menu that went to preset sites... was it called the DisneyBar or something?

This will likely be through a windows update of some sort. Don't download that update

Holy crap, Talesin likes linux!! We can agree on something! Now he just has to convert to Nvidia.

As for advertisements in the start menu, yeah that is gonna be really annoying and will probably be optional due to lawsuits arising. But I mean, you can understand why people advertise, just look at your signature, its full of that crap.

    Your monitors fight?(dual)

I honestly doubt it'll be more than just a extension of the Windows Catalog. Windows doesn't advertise that heavy now, and I doubt they'd go worse.

The US Department of Homeland Security is the organization you are seeking.

I know of a patch that will solve this - it's called Windows 2000. Why anyone would choose to "upgrade" to Windows XPoo is... well, it's wrong, that's what it is. With that mentality, you should go trade in your BMW for a Yugo. If you have a BMW, that is. Oh, nevermind.

EDIT: I was browsing the Microsoft website, and this link was on the front page. I think "Ha Ha (repeating)" would be an appropriate description of the contents of said page.

I'm of the "screw XP use 2k" school. 2k does everything i want, it doesn't chew as much resources and for me its always been more stable. i probably won't be using XP for a loong loooong time, or never if i can help it.
  • Fro5tyFro5ty Join Date: 2003-09-26 Member: 21238Members, Constellation
IMHO, 2k has been one of the best OSes that MS has ever made. With 98>>>SE<<< being up there too. I remember back when XP came out and I looked at the minimums for it, my computer at the time didn't even get near em. As for my current one, I could install it and it work fine, but if it aint broke, why fix it? I mean, I get my computer to boot up ALL the way into windows (from pushing the power button) in under a minute. I haven't encountered any OSes like that, even my brief exploration of LINUX. It would start into the CUI, and it still took a couple of minutes for it to do it. Not to mentin the fact that it takes it like 10 minutes to get into the GUI, and that's what most people use.

Mantrid: Hey, you didn't have to roll through the French country side in a French made tin-can with a bulls-eye on the side with Germans shooting you and trying to blow you up. If these ads really are intrusive, people will find/make a way to get rid of them. Either that, or wake up and smell the penguin and switch to linux. Actually... I don't imagine a penguin smells very good...

    They smell like fish...

Btw, I'm using XP right now (although I am a big fan of 2000, I kinda lost the disk), and I'm using it right now. Boots in under 30 seconds flat, and as for linux, my server machine boots in about the same :/

Windows Server 2003, is far more stabler and faster than 2000 and XP combined. Takes around 15 seconds to boot up even with tons of crap installed. Only problem is compatibility issues with software
