They better damn well have a way to turn it off.
I doubt Microsoft would shove advertisements in your place... Just go to Start -> Programs and look up the top. Blammo, Windows Catalog.
They're probably just gonna replace that link with Marketplace.
I'd love all the lovely little lawsuits that would spring up if Microsoft started shoving advertisements down your throat.
As for advertisements in the start menu, yeah that is gonna be really annoying and will probably be optional due to lawsuits arising. But I mean, you can understand why people advertise, just look at your signature, its full of that crap.
I honestly doubt it'll be more than just a extension of the Windows Catalog. Windows doesn't advertise that heavy now, and I doubt they'd go worse.
The US Department of Homeland Security is the organization you are seeking.
I know of a patch that will solve this - it's called Windows 2000. Why anyone would <b>choose</b> to "upgrade" to Windows XPoo is... well, it's <i>wrong</i>, that's what it is. With that mentality, you should go trade in your BMW for a Yugo. If you have a BMW, that is. Oh, nevermind.
EDIT: I was browsing the Microsoft website, and <a href='http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/privacy/secprivessntl.mspx' target='_blank'> this link</a> was on the front page. I think "Ha Ha (repeating)" would be an appropriate description of the contents of said page.

Hey - you leave the poor ol' Yugo out of this! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Mantrid: Hey, you didn't have to roll through the French country side in a French made tin-can with a bulls-eye on the side with Germans shooting you and trying to blow you up. So what would you know? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Med: It's like trading in an old Charger with that nice Hemi for a Mickey Moused Geo with a GPS that rewards you for finding your way around.
That rolling through the French country side in a French made tin-can with a bulls-eye on the side with Germans shooting me and trying to blow me up was hazardous to my health.
They smell like fish...
Btw, I'm using XP right now (although I am a big fan of 2000, I kinda lost the disk), and I'm using it right now. Boots in under 30 seconds flat, and as for linux, my server machine boots in about the same :/
...
Anyway, where is this mythical "Windows Catalogue" of which you speak? It doesn't seem to be in my Start menu....
Then how did you manage to run Steam with Wine?
as a side note
it will be tops of 3 days before some one figgures out a way to get around this and remove the adds <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
