With the new patch and the general increase in skill of alien players (w0000t!) it's now time for the marines to learn how to play. No longer will wandering around with an HA and HMG allow you to rack up l33t kills (which aren't shown for a reason). Fear is your new friend because fear will keep you together as a team. For heaven's sake, cover each others backs. Look above, behind, below as you moved. When you're in your base getting armor, FACE THE ENTRANCES. Don't stand with your back to the door (unless you LIKE being a meatpop for aliens).
Follow your commander. He has some idea of which objectives you need to complete. Rushing back to where you died to avenge your death on that alien that just wiped the floor with your carcass won't help your team any. (Not to mention that it'll waste the resources needed to give you that HMG you keep whining for.)
Read the FAQ. Read the design docs. Read the site. Marines are SUPPOSED to get slaughtered if they wander off alone or don't listen to their commander.
Commanders. Consider the possibility that the starting spawn isn't necessarily your best option for a base. Some of them are horrible in fact.

Now the marines should pray for an actual competent commander to keep them in groups and concentrating on the objective. They still own with heavy armor, but if they DONT GET heavy armor (due to fix in resource bug), they should follow and protect someone who does (much like the alien builders have been following and protecting onos).
previously , Aliens were forced to play hardcore teamwork just to NOT DIE in 5 minutes. Marines were individual.
now, Aliens still have to play hardcore teamwork to win, BUT so do marines.
Of course, the marines have a commander, which helps teamwork a lot. But now he has to be a GOOD commander, not a general weapon-hand-outer but an actual strategist.
Good job
I can't remember which level it was but myself and one other guy, both with heavy armor and HMG's, secured an area by ourselves with support from the commander. We both had welders so we could keep our armor up. The commander also kept us stocked with ammo and health until we set up turrets and the resource tower.
People waste their resources by doing the whole rambo thing with the hmg's and heavy armor. Hell, most of the game i play as a normal soldier with just what i start off with, maybe getting a welder every once and a while. I could effectively hold a long hallway from skulks. At one point i had nailed about seven skulks before i had to back off for health and ammo.
Point is you need to use strategy and using a few heavier weapons better.
Lessons learned: Marines CANNOT simply spend all their time beefing up their base defenses, then research HA and HMGS and then suddenly venture out late in the game, obliterating everything in their path. 90% of the time the marine base was abandoned and a mad race was on to rebuild inside an alien hive. Marines who did not seize the initiative would lose, becase as the game drags on, the aliens gain the edge.
Also, heavy armor marines were at a premium-- I remember that sometimes, for each HA marine, there would be a standard issue marine following him with a welder, whose SOLE purpose was to weld his armor as he fought. That's how valuable they're supposed to be-- not disposable shock troops.
Looking forward to seeing how play evolves . . .

Mostly, yes, but sometimes no, If a skulk charges you straight on, they die, Try wall-walking and others if you are a skulk (You live longer!)
With this patch, I'm glad HEALTH and AMMO fades, but it would be cool if weapons did so as well, so there isn't just a stockpile waiting at BASE.

That has changed. The resource bug is fixed. Now marines HAVE to expand early on if they expect to win.
Everyone on the marine team can be good at CS and stuff but if they doesnt work together they are gonna lose, even if the aliens are less skilled but works together.
And on many servers that i have played on it acualy feels like the aliens uses more teamwork than the marines. I have seen countless lone marines without armour and equiped with a LMG only, that just walks around. They are very easy to kill for even a unskilled alien player, but if he sticks together with a couple of hes mates they emedietly becomes a force to be reconed with.
This is why I used to love playing on the marines, but since release, I've only played aliens. A marine victory used to be hard fought, requiring disciplined teamwork and an active, intelligent commander. Wins were a challenge-- not the default.
Also, skirmishes used to remind me of the first big battle in the movie 'Starship Troopers' . . . to take a bug down, you'd see groups of three, four clustered marines working in concert, all pumping a full clip into it. And every marine that ran from his teammates, or tried to go Rambo, would be cut to shreds in seconds.
My best moment was wading into a group of 3 HA marines using only GL's and wiping them all out with exactly 1 hp left. Was almost orgasmic!
Another time was when I went onos and made a suicide rush into the marine base, taking out the single solitary turret factory and dying, only to see the rest of my team rush in and destroy the now defenseless base.
These probably wont happen too often as the marines actually learn that teamwork and a sensible commander are required to win, but for now, I am a very happy
GL's and seige cannons are still frustrating, but then I guess a fully upgraded onos is just as frustrating to the marines, overall, it feels like a very good change for NS. Great work guys!
Noobler
I will be playing ALOT more now...
Come on lets kill some aliens!
